Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Democracy: A History of Its Suppression and Revival When we turn from State to Church we find three theories of supreme power, corresponding to mon archy, aristocracy, and democracy. Where is ec clesiastical sovereignty? Is it an autocracy in the pope? Is it an oligarchy in bishops? Is it a de mocracy of all believers, including clergy and laity, and whom we will call the people? Before answer ing these questions the three theories of ecclesias tical sovereignty should be more fully stated. I. The papal claim.-early as A. D. 496 Ge lasius asserted for himself all political and pontifical power. His successors proclaimed their right to rule the world. Centuries before Hildebrand and Innocent III and Boniface VIII this was the uni form view of Roman pontiffs as implied or expressed in the Vatican Decree of Pio Nono. The papal system is an autocracy. It vests all sovereignty in its pontiff. He is source of power and grace. These, through him'alone, flow to bishops, and from bish ops to priests, and from priests to people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the tension at the heart of America’s culture wars, this is “a very fine book on a very important subject” (Mark A. Noll, author of The Civil War as a Theological Crisis). Christianity, not religion in general, has been important for American democracy. With this bold thesis, Hugh Heclo offers a panoramic view of how Christianity and democracy have shaped each other. Heclo shows that amid deeply felt religious differences, a Protestant colonial society gradually convinced itself of the truly Christian reasons for, as well as the enlightened political advantages of, religious liberty. By the mid-twentieth century, American democracy and Christianity appeared locked in a mutual embrace. But it was a problematic union vulnerable to fundamental challenge in the Sixties. Despite the subsequent rise of the religious right and glib talk of a conservative Republican theocracy, Heclo sees a longer-term, reciprocal estrangement between Christianity and American democracy. Responding to his challenging argument, Mary Jo Bane, Michael Kazin, and Alan Wolfe criticize, qualify, and amend it. Heclo’s rejoinder suggests why both secularists and Christians should worry about a coming rupture between the Christian and democratic faiths. The result is a lively debate about a momentous tension in American public life.

Book excerpt: A provocative reassessment of religion and culture in the early days of the American republic "The so-called Second Great Awakening was the shaping epoch of American Protestantism, and this book is the most important study of it ever published."—James Turner, Journal of Interdisciplinary History Winner of the John Hope Franklin Publication Prize, the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic book prize, and the Albert C. Outler Prize In this provocative reassessment of religion and culture in the early days of the American republic, Nathan O. Hatch argues that during this period American Christianity was democratized and common people became powerful actors on the religious scene. Hatch examines five distinct traditions or mass movements that emerged early in the nineteenth century—the Christian movement, Methodism, the Baptist movement, the black churches, and the Mormons—showing how all offered compelling visions of individual potential and collective aspiration to the unschooled and unsophisticated.

This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What's the Matter With Our Uncle Sam? Or Building a Christian Democracy Every student of human affairs is confronted with the fact that man exists. We are here. We have a being. We are possessed with intelligence. Wherever we look we see the unmistakable evidences that the wonderful creation all about us is, in one way or another, adapted to the needs of man. \ve drink the water. We breathe the air. We cultivate the fields that they may bring forth the fruits of earth. We bask in the warm sun shine, and our hearts are lifted up in praise to God as we see the springing of new life all around us, invited and tempted by sunshine and shower. In the heavens above us the sun reigns as the great king of the universe, and among the starry hosts of heaven rides the moon as the beautiful queen of the night. Her soft light sheds its benediction upon the world and guards its slumbers. What is the meaning of all this wonderful creation? The philosophers of every age have attempted to answer this question, but every attempt has brought to the world new questions, new facts, new theories, and new definitions. Is the question answered in Holy Writ? Holy Writ is the world's Bible, and the first four words of that immortal book are, In the beginning God. In that book we are told that it was God who created the heavens, in which He placed the sun, to give us light by day, and the moon, to give us light by night. Such a definition is here presented as nearly as possible in the words used by the leaders and formulators of the ideas and by the generations of citizens of the United States whose thoughts and actions have been controlled by them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democratic Christianity: Some Problems of the Church in the Days Just Ahead When the Founder of Christianity declared it further to be the duty of every man to love his neigh bor as himself he set up another pillar of democracy. If the first utterance puts upon the separate life a great dignity the second ennobles all impulses to ward closer fellowship among men. All that is needed to keep this double doctrine back of the demo cratic movement as a compelling force is an insist ence upon the duty of bringing more and more of the acts of the individual under the conception of divine service and more and more persons under the term neighbor. The efficacy of the religion of Jesus in such progress is beyond all question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
