Book excerpt: Christian crooks have existed since the beginning of the Christian faith. As a first hand account of the tumultuous waters existing in the Church of the All Righteous, the book details village leaders playing spiritual chess with their roles and responsibilities, tithes and offerings, plus the spiritual growth and development of the villagers. Christian Crooks tells of a leadership style benignly perpetuating corruption swirling from person to person and generation to generation. The book brings into the fold a better understanding of Christian discipline and the consequences of un-Godly actions. It provides the spiritually wounded a mechanism for which to acknowledge burdens, release pains, then move towards spiritual healings. Additionally Christian Crooks provides information to increase church leader's understanding of how biblical principles should and should not be implemented. Ultimately it offers the process for a change of heart among the leadership and the membership.

The novel is a tug-of-war depicting confusion between the Christian Crooks and the new pastor, Dr. Joe Dreamer. The story highlights the daily life of a pastor addicted in his own sins. Paralleling numerous biblical characters, this story gives a multifaceted blend of current religious beliefs and practices. Either way, the book will definitely tickle yur emotional funny bone.

Book Synopsis Crime, Jews and News by : Dan Vyleta
Download or read book Crime, Jews and News written by Dan Vyleta and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the discourse in the press on Jewish crime at the turn of the 19th century - in an epoch when criminal and court-room reports became very popular and attracted a wide audience. The period 1895-1914 was marked by the development of criminal science, which attempted to find psychological and physical abnormalities identifying the "born" criminal, and by a rise in racist antisemitism. Theories of a Jewish propensity to crime were circulated. Remarkably, racial antisemitism affected the press accounts on Jewish criminals, or Jewish "accomplices" (defense attorneys, etc.) of non-Jewish criminals, only to a small degree. Of all the antisemitic narratives on Jewish criminality, the antisemitic press used mainly the image of the Jew as a rational and cunning criminal actor, coolly acting out a crime that was collective and conspiratorial in nature. Even when reporting on sexual crimes and "white slave trafficking", the papers never stressed sexual motives of Jewish defendants but only their callous greed. Dwells on the ritual murder trial of Hilsner in Bohemia, and shows the extent to which the perception of this case and even the course of the trial were affected by the press. The reports of the antisemitic press on Jewish criminality was intended for antisemitic "believers" and did not affect non-antisemites; however, this press had a great number of readers. In the Nazi period, the narrative on Jewish criminality acquired blatantly racial motifs.

Book Synopsis Saints Behaving Badly by : Thomas J. Craughwell

Book excerpt: From thieves and extortionists to mass murderers and warmongers, up-close and embarrassingly personal snapshots of those sanctified people with the most unsaintly pasts in the history of Christianity. Saints are not born, they are made. And many, as Saints Behaving Badly reveals, were made of very rough materials indeed. The first book to lay bare the less than saintly behavior of thirty-two venerated holy men and women, it presents the scandalous, spicy, and sleazy detours they took on the road to sainthood. In nineteenth- and twentieth-century writings about the lives of the saints, authors tended to go out of their way to sanitize their stories, often glossing over the more embarrassing cases with phrases such as, “he/she was once a great sinner.” In the early centuries of the Church and throughout the Middle Ages, however, writers took a more candid and spirited approach to portraying the saints. Exploring sources from a wide range of periods and places, Thomas Craughwell discovered a veritable rogues gallery of sinners-turned-saints. There’s St. Olga, who unleashed a bloodbath on her husband’s assassins; St. Mary of Egypt, who trolled the streets looking for new sexual conquests; and Thomas Becket, who despite his vast riches refused to give his cloak to a man freezing to death in the street. Written with wit and respect (each profile ends with what inspired the saint to give up his or her wicked ways), Saints Behaving Badly will entertain, inform, and even inspire Catholic readers across America.

And yet Christ called him, confirmed Bill in a tough inner-city ministry. He was caught between two warring gangs, threatened, shot at and beaten seriously. Through it all the Holy Spirit empowered Bill. With the support of Elaine who feared for her husband, Bill he returned each day to the Bawdy District to seek to snatch souls from the jaws of Hell. Walk with Bill on the sidewalks, stepping over the stoned or drunk, smelling the sour fumes pouring out of the bars, past the porno ships and the X-rated theaters, dodging the street walkers on the corners and trying to bring the light of Christ into very dark lives.

Book excerpt: Reverend Adam Crooks was an activist and minister whose tireless campaigns against slavery in the 19th century led to his being one of Methodist church's most famous abolitionists. Born at a time when slavery in America was scarcely questioned by the religious establishment, Reverend Crooks? felt a personal revulsion toward enslavement, and especially its continuation by individuals purporting to be true Christians. Despite the dangers of preaching the abolitionist cause in the southern states where slavery was legal, he did so tirelessly and for many years ? encouraging congregations and other Christian ministers to join his cause. After facing off against trumped up charges in court, Rev. Crooks? devotion to abolitionism became famous. Living to see the harrowing destruction of the U.S. Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation which followed, Adam Crooks diverted his spirit to a new cause: that of temperance. Until his death in 1874, Crooks was also one of the fiercest proponents against alcohol.
