Book Synopsis Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary in Art by : Patrick Flanagan
Download or read book Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary in Art written by Patrick Flanagan and published by Giclee Creative Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "JESUS CHRIST & THE VIRGIN MARY IN ART: A VISUAL PRAYER BOOK & ART ANTHOLOGY" is a distinctive new religious art book. It is a stunning 334 page 9" by 11" hardcover printed on 70 lb. bright white glossy paper which totally enhances the true colors of each marvelous painting. This comprehensive collection of 280 incredible oil paintings truly becomes a strong personal conduit for reflection and compelling inspiration for an intimate closeness with Jesus Christ and The Virgin Mary. Readers will learn about the life and art career of 36 master religious artists, their distinctive art styles, historic perspective and enjoy many of their finest religious artwork created from 1200 A.D. to the early 1900's A.D. It is as much an interesting learning experience in art history, distinctive painting styles and historic perspective as it is a heartening study of important religious artwork and creating a new channel to reaching God. The creation of this book began with a goal of producing a stunning visual anthology of the best artwork--some rarely seen---of the most talented religious artists including El Greco, Giotto, Caravaggio, Raphael, Rubens, Duccio, Angelico, Bellini, Grünewald, Botticelli, Bosch, Mantegna, Van der Weyden and many more and encouraging a VISUAL meditational focus on the paintings while praying or reflecting. Traditional, centuries-old Christian Meditation involves reading bible passages, and fervently reciting prayers to reach a meditative state. This VISUAL PRAYER BOOK takes Christian Meditation to a new beautiful sensory level by combining the focusing of all our senses on the vivid images while praying--all leading to a stronger channel to absorb the love and strength of Jesus and The Virgin Mary and allows our being to be totally one with the painting. The 280 oil paintings are presented as a "window" or a "meeting place" of our mind and soul between ourselves and God. We hope that readers may find a capacity to move through and beyond to "contact" God in a direct, personal way-- creating a time of communion in which you may be inspired, healed, reconciled, challenged, and nourished. Meditating with art---particularly religious art--is a practical devotional tool that is highly portable. The presence and strength of God is all around us, all the time. The creativity of these spiritual paintings powerfully reaches us throughout our being. What emerges from the artist touches the viewer. The viewer opens to the spiritual realities the image presents. The image unites the artist and the viewer----and GOD AND OUR SPIRITUALITY IS AT THE CENTER. Here is what noted art historian, best-selling art author and PBS host of art history broadcasts; Sister Wendy Beckett once observed: "I knew that if we really looked at all spiritual religious art, we would see that it draws us into something greater than ourselves, something beyond, something other... .. -- AND THAT SOMETHING IS GOD!" The Voice of God is often "heard" through image rather than sound. Hidden within the silent metaphors of artistic impressions, whispers of the Holy Spirit can be recognized and sensed. This section of Oasis dedicated to meditating with art, strives to distinguish these whispers in an atmosphere of artistic beauty and solitude. "Every genuine art form -especially paintings---in its own way is a path to the inmost reality of man and of the world. It is therefore a wholly valid approach to the realm of faith, which gives human experience its ultimate meaning." Candace Loheed said "Resting the mind can be accomplished by meditation, and also by artwork, which allows the intuition to flow: the conscious mind recedes. Meditation and artwork at their best complement each other, and true things emerge." This book truly brings together the appreciation of beautiful religious artwork and its importance in reaching a closer to connection to God by focusing on the artwork and praying.
Book Synopsis The Virgin Birth of Christ by : J. Gresham Machen
Download or read book The Virgin Birth of Christ written by J. Gresham Machen and published by . This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume sustains, and more than sustains, Dr. Machen's reputation as not only one of the world's foremost New Testament scholars but as one of the ablest defenders of historic Christianity. His former books, 'The Origin of Paul's Religion' (1921), 'Christianity and Liberalism' (1923) and 'What is Faith?' (1925), have so whetted the appetites of their thousands of readers that the announcement of a new book by Dr. Machen fills them with eager expectancy---whatever may be their theological position. It will be recalled that Mr. Walter Lippmann, whose theological position is about as far removed as possible from that of Dr. Machen's, in his widely read book, 'A Preface to Morals', not only speaks of Dr. Machen as 'both a scholar and a gentleman' but says of his book, 'Christianity and Liberalism': 'It is an admirable book. For its acumen, for its saliency, and for its wit, this cool and stringent defense of orthodox Protestantism is, I think, the best popular argument produced by either side in the current controversy. We shall do well to listen to Dr. Machen.' Dr. Machen's latest book, it is true, like 'The Origin of Paul's Religion', moves throughout in the field of exact scholarship. It would be difficult to point to a book anywhere that is more thorough-going in its recital and examination of all that bears upon the subject with which it deals. But while this is the case, Dr. Machen writes so simply and lucidly that men and women of intelligence everywhere, whatever their standing as technical scholars, will be able to read it with understanding and profit. Certainly no minister or Bible teacher of adults can afford to ignore this book. To the reviewer at least it is a source of much satisfaction to know that what is confessedly the most exhaustive and most scholarly book on the problem of the Virgin Birth of Christ ever published, at least in English, has been written by a man who after having acquainted himself with everything of importance that has been written on the subject since the first century, no matter in what language, holds to the historic belief of the Christian Church that its founder was born without human father, being conceived by the Holy Ghost and born of the Virgin Mary." -Samuel Craig

Book Synopsis Cold-Case Christianity by : J. Warner Wallace
Download or read book Cold-Case Christianity written by J. Warner Wallace and published by David C Cook. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an L. A. County homicide detective and former atheist, Cold-Case Christianity examines the claims of the New Testament using the skills and strategies of a hard-to-convince criminal investigator. Christianity could be defined as a “cold case”: it makes a claim about an event from the distant past for which there is little forensic evidence. In Cold-Case Christianity, J. Warner Wallace uses his nationally recognized skills as a homicide detective to look at the evidence and eyewitnesses behind Christian beliefs. Including gripping stories from his career and the visual techniques he developed in the courtroom, Wallace uses illustration to examine the powerful evidence that validates the claims of Christianity. A unique apologetic that speaks to readers’ intense interest in detective stories, Cold-Case Christianity inspires readers to have confidence in Christ as it prepares them to articulate the case for Christianity.

Book Synopsis The Christ: A Critical Review and Analysis of the Evidences of his Existence by : John Eleazer Remsburg
Download or read book The Christ: A Critical Review and Analysis of the Evidences of his Existence written by John Eleazer Remsburg and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reader who accepts as divine the prevailing religion of our land may consider this criticism on “The Christ” irreverent and unjust. And yet for man’s true saviors I have no lack of reverence. For him who lives and labors to uplift his fellow men I have the deepest reverence and respect, and at the grave of him who upon the altar of immortal truth has sacrificed his life I would gladly pay the sincere tribute of a mourner’s tears. It is not against the man Jesus that I write, but against the Christ Jesus of theology; a being in whose name an Atlantic of innocent blood has been shed; a being in whose name the whole black catalogue of crime has been exhausted; a being in whose name five hundred thousand priests are now enlisted to keep “Truth forever on the scaffold, Wrong forever on the throne.” Jesus of Nazareth, the Jesus of humanity, the pathetic story of whose humble life and tragic death has awakened the sympathies of millions, is a possible character and may have existed; but the Jesus of Bethlehem, the Christ of Christianity, is an impossible character and does not exist. From the beginning to the end of this Christ’s earthly career he is represented by his alleged biographers as a supernatural being endowed with superhuman powers. He is conceived without a natural father: “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When, as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost” (Matt. i, 18). His ministry is a succession of miracles. With a few loaves and fishes he feeds a multitude: “And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men” (Mark vi, 41–44). He walks for miles upon the waters of the sea: “And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray; and when the evening was come, he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves; for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea” (Matt. xiv, 22–25). He bids a raging tempest cease and it obeys him: “And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.... And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm” (Mark, iv, 37–39). He withers with a curse the barren fig tree: “And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee, henceforth, forever. And presently the fig tree withered away” (Matt. xxi, 19).
