Book excerpt: Over the years law enforcement agencies throughout America have acquired a blemished reputation for the occasional enforcement contact that society has considered to be a crime perpetrated against citizens, whether innocent or not. Even the California Highway Patrol has endured an unfortunate criminal act, when one of its own murdered an innocent woman in San Diego during the Christmas Season of 1986. By writing this book, it is my intention to contribute to the reparation of the tarnished reputations of all American law enforcement agencies. I write this book now after 25 years, since my retirement from the California Highway Patrol. I had always intended to document the testimonials of my many close encounters of a God kind and of the literal hundreds of salvation experiences that I was privileged enjoy. This book contains just a few, and I might add that these are the most memorable. It has been nearly two decades since I last spoke of them. But this in no means diminishes there impact and spiritual import, since anything of the spirit is timeless and therefore eternal, even as God, Himself. It is my sincere prayer for you that your heart will be stirred towards Godliness as you read of my memoirs and that as you do so, your soul will be refreshed with His love and goodness! As to the names of those individuals involved, I intentionally used fictitious names, partial names or initials for privacy purposes. However with permission, I have given notable mention of my good friend and brother in arms, State Traffic Officer, Allen Wilkerson. Respectfully Submitted, Ed Marr, STO (retired)

Book excerpt: Coffee, one of the most commercially important crops grown, is distributed and traded globally in a multi-million dollar world industry. This exciting new book brings together in one volume the most important recent developments affecting the crop. Contributions from around 20 internationally-respected coffee scientists and technologists from around the world provide a vast wealth of new information in the subject areas in which they are expert. The book commences with three cutting-edge chapters covering non-volatile and volatile compounds that determine the flavour of coffee. Chapters covering technology follow, including comprehensive information on developments in roasting techniques, decaffeination, the science and technology of instant coffee and home / catering beverage preparation. The physiological effects of coffee drinking are considered in a fascinating chapter on coffee and health. Agronomic aspects of coffee breeding and growing are covered specifically in chapters concentrating on these aspects, particularly focussing on newly-emerging molecular and cellular techniques. Finally, recent activities of some international organisations are reviewed in a lengthy appendix. The editors of Coffee: Recent Developments have drawn together a comprehensive and extremely important book that should be on the shelves of all those involved in coffee. The book is a vital tool for food scientists, food technologists and agricultural scientists and the commercially important information included in the book makes it a 'must have reference' to all food companies involved with coffee. All libraries in universities, and research stations where any aspect of the coffee crop is studied or taught should have copies of the book available. R. J. Clarke, also co-editor of the widely-acclaimed six-volume work Coffee published between 1985 and 1988, is a consultant based in Chichester U. K. O. G. Vitzthum, formerly Director of Coffee Chemistry Research worldwide at Kraft, Jacobs, Suchard in Bremen, Germany is Honorary Professor at the Technical University of Braunsweig, Germany and Scientific Secretary of the Association Scientifique Internationale du Cafe (ASIC), in Paris France.

Book excerpt: This novel is about the fundamental changes that took place in the lives of Will, Bill, and Jackie, in less than a year, while Deweys priority, his oil company, will never change While at home for his mothers funeral, Will Thomas, a petroleum engineer, watches the BP oil well in the Gulf fail, causing the government to shut down all drilling in the Gulf. Will discovers a possible oil field under his fathers 700 acre citrus farm. If Dewey Carlson, Wills boss, can recover this oil, his company can survive. Otherwise, Carlson Oil will be bankrupt, and Will and his colleagues will lose their jobs. When Will goes to the bank, he meets the most beautiful women hes ever seen, and falls madly in love. He decides hes not leaving her to wait for him to return from some project on the other side of the world. Those days are over, even if it means giving up his career and becoming a citrus farmer with his dad. Bill Thomas, seeing his sons after his wife dies, realizes how much he has missed being with his sons and grandchildren, makes his top priorities the relationship with his family and their happiness, and the new members, Jackie and her daughter, Angie, that will be part of the family when Will gets married. Dewey Carlson still is obsessed with finding which politicians and bureaucrats to bribe for drilling permits, getting around roadblocks put in his way by environmentalists against all drilling, and older locals who dont want any changes in their town. His only priority is his company.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains an edition of the Minutes of the Coffee House Philosophical Society 1780-1787, as transcribed by William Nicholson, the secretary to the society. The 1780s were exciting years for science and for its applications, and experimental philosophy and industrial development wereclosely interwoven. This coffee house society provided a group of natural philosophers with the oppotunity to discuss the topics that most interested them. The minutes themselves, unique in their completeness, constitute a continuous record of the fortnightly meetings of a group of leading naturalphilosophers, instrument makers, physicians, and industrialist entrepreneurs. They are an important resource for historians of politics and society (including the industrial revolution), as well as for historians of science and technology. In addition to a fully edited edition of the Minute book, and brief biographies of all the members, the book includes essays by Jan Golinski on the members' discussion about phlogiston and other issues relating to the chemical revolution, and by Larry Stewart on the reforming, radical, andindustrial contexts of the networks to which the members belonged. One of the standard criticisms of English science in the late eighteenth century is its isolation from the rest of Europe. These minutes offer a very different picture. The members, the Irish chemist Richard Kirwan taking the most active role, discussed current issues in science and reported onscientific and industrial advances from all Europe, and even from Hudson's Bay, showing early English awareness of the latest developments. The Minute Book gives a sense of history at a particular period, and is invaluable to all historians, whatever their specialism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first decade of the twenty-first century, countries within Sub-Saharan Africa reached milestones that seemed impossible only ten years ago: macroeconomic stability, sustained economic growth, and improved governance. Continuing this pattern of success will require enhancing the region’s agricultural sector, in which a large proportion of poor people make a living. The authors of Strategies and Priorities for African Agriculture: Economywide Perspectives from Country Studies argue that, although the diversity of the region makes generalization difficult, increasing staple-crop production is more likely to reduce poverty than increasing export-crop production. This conclusion is based on case studies of ten low-income African countries that reflect varying levels of resource endowments and development stages. The authors also recommend increased, more efficient public investment in agriculture and agricultural markets and propose new directions for future research. The last ten years have been an encouraging time for one of the world’s poorest regions; this book offers an analysis of how recent, promising trends can be sustained into the future.

Book excerpt: The worldwide bestseller - 1/3 million copies sold 'With his expert guidance we travel around the globe, from Burundi to Honduras via Vietnam, sipping and spitting as we go. This is high geekery made palatable by the evident love pulsing through every sentence.' - The Guardian 'The subject of coffee has never been more, er, hot, and The World Atlas of Coffee takes a close look at its history and evolution, the international range of beans and all the best ways to enjoy coffee. Great pics too.' - Susy Atkins, The Telegraph For everyone who wants to understand more about coffee and its wonderful nuances and possibilities, this is the book to have. Coffee has never been better, or more interesting, than it is today. Coffee producers have access to more varieties and techniques than ever before and we, as consumers, can share in that expertise to make sure the coffee we drink is the best we can find. Where coffee comes from, how it was harvested, the roasting process and the water used to make the brew are just a few of the factors that influence the taste of what we drink. Champion barista and coffee expert James Hoffmann examines these key factors, looking at varieties of coffee, the influence of terroir, how it is harvested and processed, the roasting methods used, through to the way in which the beans are brewed. Country by country - from Bolivia to Zambia - he then identifies key characteristics and the methods that determine the quality of that country's output. Along the way we learn about everything from the development of the espresso machine, to why strength guides on supermarket coffee are really not good news. This is the first book to chart the coffee production of over 35 countries, encompassing knowledge never previously published outside the coffee industry.

The end of the civil war in 1992 marked the establishment of a liberal democracy and an open export-led development model, which led to a reduction in poverty and inequality. However, with economic growth averaging a modest 2.4% in the years before the COVID-19 pandemic, and productivity growth of 0.1% over the past decade, the post-war model has not generated the economic momentum or the jobs that the country needs.

Book excerpt: Inspired by the headlines of the popular Netflix documentary, Tiger King, best selling paranormal erotic romance author Trinity Blacio has given an already bizarre story a supernatural twist using the real-life characters of this feline tale as the basis for her eighth installment of her Masters of the Cats series. Dominik Schmidt, the man people referred to as “The Tiger King,” which just pissed him off, was perfectly happy with his polyamorous male foursome until she came along. His mates Hariku, Trank and Ando had never even looked at a woman before, but as soon as that female vet came on the scene, all chaos broke loose. Not to mention the police sticking their noses where they didn’t belong and accusing him of all sorts of “animal rights” violations. Dr. Sandy Cree was perfectly happy saving wild animals from collectors who couldn’t take care of them. She didn’t need anyone, especially the pompous “Tiger King” and his three bad ass, but hot, boyfriends. So why was she such a hot mess whenever they came around? And now that someone was after her, and they were her salvation, could she really put up with all their male animal energy and possibly join them?
