Book excerpt: I have been used, abused, lied to, and cheated on, blamed, shamed, screamed at, and ridiculed. I've been scammed and damned, had my ass kissed, my reputation dissed, and my face spat on. All in the name of working as a celebrity personal assistant . . . a CHORE WHORE! After twenty years of working thanklessly for a dozen high-powered Hollywood hotshots, Corki Brown has had enough. She's sick to death of handling elaborate extortion deals, washing groupies' dirty underwear, and having to whip up intimate dinners on no notice for spoiled stars, each with his or her own bizarre dietary demands. And now her ten-year-old son is starting to exhibit some disturbing signs of Tinseltown weirdness. It's time to get out, but escape won't be easy. . . .

Unique and humorous, the book was actually adopted by the BBC drama department as a reference for voice coaches when a white, urban, English-speaking South African accent was required. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you young, eager, smart, and heading off to LA to make it big in the entertainment business? Time for a reality check: Leave your diploma at home, put your grandiose dreams on hold (where hopefully they'll get tired and hang up), and start by repeating the first rule of the industry: Who you work for is more important than who you are. Then leapfrog over everyone else by reading The Hollywood Assistants Handbook. Written by two very sharp and successful assistants to HPPs (Hollywood Power Players), here are 86 lessons packed with a combination of blunt truth, insider humor, and juicy secrets that explain the unwritten rules of how to get a foot in the door and make all the right moves as you climb to the top. Here are the minimum-wage jobs that will put you in the path of HPPs. An annotated resume roundup. The clubs to frequent and the cocktails to order. Movies to watch and books to read (it's called homework). Dressing do's and don'ts. How to get on the Free List. A lineup of boss genres—the Horror Show, the Romantic Comedy, Mr. Action—and how to dodge the tirades that will soon be hurled your way, along with the proper outlets for venting. Plus, the ins and outs of your most important tool, the telephone—when to listen in (always!), who to put through and who to put off, and your new best friend forever, the Plantronics CS70 cordless headset. With its hilariously snarky tone—the gate-keeping quiz is "How to Tell if You're a Moron Who Should Pack Up the Corolla and Move Back Home"—The Hollywood Assistants Handbook is as baldly entertaining for everyone who loves reading about Hollywood as it is indispensably practical for the job-seeker.

Book excerpt: Reviews of the two-volume New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English, 2005: The king is dead. Long live the king! The old Partridge is not really dead; it remains the best record of British slang antedating 1945 Now, however, the preferred source for information about English slang of the past 60 years is the New Partridge. James Rettig, Booklist, American Library Association Most slang dictionaries are no better than momgrams or a rub of the brush, put together by shmegegges looking to make some moola. The New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English, on the other hand, is the wee babes. Ian Sansom, The Guardian The Concise New Partridge presents, for the first time, all the slang terms from the New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English in a single volume. Book excerpt: I've had a rough life, and unless it was so, I would not have even considered sharing my story since while writing I have found it hard to believe that I was so lost, so dark, so empty and as co-dependent as any other person in any other abusive relationship I have ever met; something I've never acknowledged before now. Don't worry though, I won't bore you with another sad story of childhood abuse and neglect, even though I was an unloved, emotionally and psychologically abused slave-child, which was pretty awful in my opinion if only because of being the one who had to live it; however, I do want to touch on those parts that I believe had the biggest impact on the forming of my mind. Those parts that include the fear, favoritism, criticism, traumatic experiences and inner anger I grew up with, which led to the outward anger, hostility, anxiety, lack of self-esteem, neediness, co-dependency and depression I experienced for my entire adult life up until this point. My upbringing doomed me to seek love wherever I believed I could find it, starting-out by marrying the first man I ever dated in order to escape my abusive childhood home. My husband and I divorce four years later and in doing so, I abandon my first two children which leads to subjecting myself to drunkenness and sexual promiscuity, followed by seven years of torment from a violently abusive, lying, child-molesting, drug-addicted, alcoholic boyfriend whom I end-up marrying. After multiple abortions I am blessed with a daughter, face down a demon, divorce for the second time, find the love of my life, give birth to another son and then the battle against my life-threatening depression begins while maintaining a faade of normalcy. Throughout my life I find God, then lose Him, then find Him once more, with my relationship with the Lord being based entirely on what was happening in my tumultuous life at any-given moment, although it is this relationship that saves me during my darkest moments whether I knew it or not. Anatomy of a Life is a haunting and heart-rending memoir which starts as a child's normal life, but eventually turns into one of tragedy once one abuser after another places their eternal prints on a young girl's psyche. Forty-five years later, through the love of her husband and children, as well as her faith in God's promises, Penelope has survived, and though still a battle at times, is thriving. Hopefully, this story will strike a chord with those who have lived through similar circumstances, eventually seeing that there is a light at the end of whatever dark tunnel you may be traveling.

Book excerpt: A brief and brilliant satire of magazine hacks and fashionistas, The Sweet Smell of Psychosis shows Will Self—a writer hailed by Time as “brilliant, iconoclastic . . . one of Britain’s most original young writers”—at the top of his form. It looks like it’s going to be quite a Christmas for Richard Hermes, powdered with cocaine and whining with the white noise of urban derangement. Not so much enfolded as trapped in the bosom of the most venal media clique in London, Richard is losing it on all fronts: he’s losing his heart to Ursula Bentley, a nubile and vacuous magazine columnist; he’s in danger of losing his job at the pretentious listings magazine Rendezvous; he’s losing his mind courtesy of Colombia’s chief illegal export; and, worst of all, he’s losing his soul . . . to the king-of-all-media and sinister purveyor of opportunities—sexual, chemical, and professional—known only as Bell. Murky, paranoid, and hilarious, The Sweet Smell of Psychosis is Will Self at his best.

(1 Peter 5:8) In order to be sober and vigilant, scripture tells us we need to know our enemy. The more we know about the wiles of the devil and his minions, the easier it is to defeat them. The Bible teaches us how to live godly lives. It's the devil's job to interfere and to crush the things of God in our lives. Jesus was the firstborn of many brethren. What made Him different? Jesus was an empty vessel that the anointing of God could flow through. Jesus never performed a single miracle. He said himself in John 5:30, "I can of Mine own self do nothing; because I seek not Mine own will, but the will of the Father which sent Me." It was the anointing of God that poured through Jesus that spoke the words of His Father, healed the sick, and raised the dead. After Jesus died, the born-again new creatures in Christ became the brethren. We, now, are the vessels that the anointing flows through. Because of this anointing, the devil hates the born-again Christian. His attacks are unrelenting, but as Jesus said in John 17:14-15, "I have given them Thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that Thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that Thou shouldest keep them from the evil." I pray that this book can give the reader the knowledge needed to rise above the trappings of the world. God has so much more planned for his people in the Spirit! Step out!

Book excerpt: “A writer without mercy . . . this book is like a wire stretched across the throat.” —Oliver Stone In an epic novel that does for Hollywood what Nashville did for Nashville, I’m Losing You follows the rich and famous and the down and out as their lives intersect in a series of coincidences that exposes the “bigger than life” ferocity of Hollywood—and proves that Bruce Wagner is a talent to be reckoned with. Wagner, author of the novel Dead Stars, examines the psychological complexities of Hollywood reality and fantasy, soaring far beyond the reaches of Robert Stone's Children of Light and Nathaniel West's The Day of the Locust.

Book excerpt: If there's an even darker side to Hollywood than the one America is familiar with, Bruce Wagner has found it. A twenty-first-century Nathanael West, he has been hailed for his powerful prose, his Swiftian satire, and the scalpel-sharp wit that has, in each of his novels, dissected and sometimes disemboweled Hollywood excess. Now, in his most ambitious book to date, Still Holding, the third in the Cellular Trilogy that began with I'm Losing You and I'll Let You Go, Wagner immerses readers in post-September 11 Hollywood, revealing as much rabid ambition, rampant narcissism, and unchecked mental illness as ever. It is a scabrous, epiphanic, sometimes horrifying portrait of an entangled community of legitimate stars, delusional wanna-bes, and psychosociopaths. Wagner infiltrates the gilded life of a superstar actor/sex symbol/practicing Buddhist, the compromised world of a young actress whose big break comes when she's hired to play a corpse on Six Feet Under, and the strange parallel universe of look-alikes -- an entire industry in which struggling actors are hired out for parties and conventions to play their famous counterparts. Alternately hilarious and heartfelt, ferocious and empathetic, Still Holding is Bruce Wagner's most expertly calibrated work.

Book excerpt: What if Romeo wore hockey skates, and Juliet was raised on a farm next door? As a life-long Vermonter, there are three beliefs I’ve always held true: 1. Our family farm is everything 2. Hockey is a close second 3. The Todds next door are our sworn enemies But this season will test everything I stand for. I have an illicit side job that could cost me my hockey scholarship. And now Maggie Todd knows my secret. She’s waiting for the right moment to use it against me. But every time I face off against her, I learn things I shouldn’t want to know. Like how deeply her competitive streak runs, and how sexy that is. And how easy it is to make her blush… everywhere. An Adler and a Todd cannot be lovers. Breaking that rule is like pulling a pin on a grenade--everything in my life could blow up. Can we surrender to these feelings… or will our families’ feud make us its next casualty?
