Download or read book Chord Melody and Drop 2 Chords for Mandolin written by Pete Martin and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-03-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chord melody is a very common sound in jazz. There are many books, videos and web sites to teach this for pianists and guitarists, but not for mandolin. Thus the need for this book. Chord melody is often played using drop 2 chord voicings (see chapter 1 for an explanation of what these are). Drop 2 works very well, so anyone wanting to get into this important part of jazz should study drop 2 chord voicings. In chord melody, the melody note is on top and the rest of the notes of the chord are underneath the melody note. This makes the melody easy to hear and understand and allows us plenty of color to add beneath the melody. In this book, we will learn drop 2 chord voicings first, sections 1 through 4. Section 5 will show how to use drop 2 chords for chord melody arrangements and chord soloing. This book has written music notation and tablature. They are both written for 5 string mandolin (tuned CGDAE low to high). However, one can easily use these examples for 4 or 8 stringed mandolins (tuned GDAE low to high), by just ignoring the 5th string notes in the tab and anything written below the open G string on 4 or 8 stringed mandolins.

Book Synopsis Drop-2 Concept for Guitar by : CHARLES H. CHAPMAN
Download or read book Drop-2 Concept for Guitar written by CHARLES H. CHAPMAN and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drop-2 chord forms have been used by guitarists in all musical genres for years. the concept refers to 4-way, closed voicings in root position or any inversion, dropping the second note from the top by 1 octave, hence the term drop-2. In practice, a nifty guitar harmonic symmetry occurs as drop-2 chords are invariably played on any four successive strings, muting or avoiding the remaining 2 strings. This collection will open up a new world of harmonic possibilities for the beginning to intermediate guitarists, and will shore up the basics and provide added harmonic visualization for the advanced player. Chapter on comping the chord soloing applications are also included. Written in notation and tablature.

Download or read book Jazz Mandolin Appetizers written by DON STIERNBERG and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mandolinists who wish to expand their improvisational vocabulary and spice up their rhythm accompaniment are invited to try some Jazz Mandolin Appetizers. This book and accompanying audio, prepared by chef Don Stiernberg, include a batch of etudes that address the challenges every improvising mandolinist faces. These include common issues such as selecting notes that sound good with chord progressions and finding them on the fretboard. In the first section, newmelodies are presented for chord progressions that are often played at swing andjazz jam sessions. These tunes will benefit players of any style. Concepts are discussed at the beginning of each tune such as harmonic analysis and the effects of certain intervals (useful groups of tones). The tablature suggests fingerings for the melodies. The chordal section shows how chords andprogressions can be made more interesting by adding color, tension andmovement. Chord substitution is also demonstrated. Working through this sectionwill prepare the player with commonly played progressions and will expand their chord voicing vocabulary up and down the neck. Lastly, a study of chord-melody style playing is presented. Playing the melody and harmony at the same time yields full sounding solo arrangements. Don Stiernberg is a leading proponent of the jazz mandolin style. He has eight available recordings, performs coast to coast and abroad, writes a column for Mandolin Magazine and teaches at several mandolin events.
