Download or read book Chloride Penetration Into Concrete Structures Exposed to the Marine Atmosphere written by Scott Thompson Shill and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chloride ions present in the marine atmosphere contained in marine aerosols is investigated for a relationship with chloride that accumulated into concrete. Chloride profiles are conducted on several concrete mixes containing fly ash, silica fume, and slag, with water to cementitious ratios of 0.35, 0.41, and 0.47. The chloride accumulation in concrete samples exposed to the environment is investigated with relation to the chloride deposition from the marine atmosphere measured via the wet candle test. Results indicate a possible relationship for the total accumulated chloride in the concrete with the accumulated chloride deposition (wet candle). Over the exposure periods, concrete specimens with 50% slag addition and 0.47 w/cm had the lowest average rates of chloride accumulation for deposition under 100 g/m2day. Chloride accumulation was lower in concrete containing 20% fly ash and 8% silica fume with 0.35 w/cm for chloride deposition rates over 200 g/m2day.
Book Synopsis Durability of Concrete and Cement Composites by : Chris L. Page
Download or read book Durability of Concrete and Cement Composites written by Chris L. Page and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst most structures made using concrete and cement-based composites have not shown signs of premature degradation, there have been notable exceptions. In addition, there is increasing pressure for new structures to remain in serviceable condition for long periods with only minimal maintenance before being recycled. All these factors have highlighted the issues of what affects the durability of these materials in different circumstances and how material properties can be measured and improved. Durability of concrete and cement composites summarises key research on these important topics. After an introductory chapter, the book reviews the pore structure and chemistry of cement-based materials, providing the foundation for understanding the particular aspects of degradation which are discussed in the following chapters. These include dimensional stability and cracking processes, chemical and microbiological degradation of concrete, corrosion of reinforcing and prestressing steels, deterioration associated with certain aggregates, effects of frost and problems involving fibre-reinforced and polymer-cement composites. With its distinguished international team of contributors, Durability of concrete and cement composites is a standard reference for all those concerned with improving the service life of structures using these materials. Analyses a range of materials such as reinforced steel in concrete, pre-stressed concrete and cement composites Discusses key degradation phenomena such as cracking processes and the impact of cold weather conditions A standard reference for those concerned with improving the service life of structures using concrete and cement based composites

Book Synopsis Bulk Diffuston of High Performance Concrete Specimens Exposed to Different Levels of Sodium Chloride and Seawater by : Wendy Johanna Arias
Download or read book Bulk Diffuston of High Performance Concrete Specimens Exposed to Different Levels of Sodium Chloride and Seawater written by Wendy Johanna Arias and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance to chloride penetration of specimens made with three base compositions (three different supplementary cementitious materials) and water to cementitious ratios of 0.35, 0.41, or 0.47. The specimens were subjected to bulk diffusion test or full immersion. The mixes were exposed to 0.1 M, 0.6 M, or 2.8 M sodium chloride solution for different periods of time. Also, partially immersed specimens were exposed to indoor and outdoor exposures (tidal, splash, barge). Chloride concentration profiles were obtained and the apparent diffusion coefficient was calculated. The skin effect was found only on some chloride profiles exposed to 0.1 M sodium chloride solution. The chloride binding capacity was calculated; specimens with 20% Fly Ash and 8% Silica Fume had the highest binding capacity (70.99%). The apparent diffusivity coefficient was found to be dependent on the curing regime as well as the water to cement ratio. The correlation between effective resistivity and apparent diffusion coefficient was determined.

Book Synopsis The Influence of Steam Curing on the Chloride Resistance of High Performance Concrete by : Melissa Prevey Titherington
Download or read book The Influence of Steam Curing on the Chloride Resistance of High Performance Concrete written by Melissa Prevey Titherington and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steam curing is often used in the production of precast concrete. The elevated temperature of steam curing increases the initial rate of strength development allowing for earlier removal of the formwork. Although elevated curing temperatures result in high early strength, long-term strength and durability may be adversely affected. In this study, the chloride penetration resistance of steam-cured concretes containing silica fume alone or in combination with slag was investigated. The water to cement ratio was kept constant, at 0.3, for all concretes. Testing included: (1) Compressive Strength, (2) Rapid Chloride Permeability, (3) Water Sorptivity, (4) Bulk Diffusion, and (5) Chloride Migration. For a given mixture, steam curing was found to decrease chloride resistance. However, the use of supplementary cementing materials significantly reduced the negative effects of steam curing. The performance of a 4% silica fume steam-cured concrete was comparable to that of a 100% OPC ambient-cured concrete.

Book Synopsis Maximum Likelihood Estimation for Parameters of Chloride Induced Corrosion of Concrete Bridges by : Amin Rafatian
Download or read book Maximum Likelihood Estimation for Parameters of Chloride Induced Corrosion of Concrete Bridges written by Amin Rafatian and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Most of the concrete structures that exist today have been built more than 50 years ago. These structures, especially bridges are subjected to different deterioration processes. In Montreal bridges are mainly exposed to deicing salts during the winter. Deicing salts are one of the main sources of corrosion in steel reinforcements that are embedded in concrete. The corrosion causes severe damage to bridges and these damages need an increasing amount of resources to be repaired. In this thesis the main objective is to calibrate a model for the time history of chloride penetration in concrete as a function of data obtained from core samples data. In this thesis the TransChlor® model was used to find the time history of chloride ion concentrations as a function of depth for a bridge located in Montreal. The main feature of the TransChlor model is that it takes into account real climatic data to determine the amount of chloride penetration into the concrete. A total of 45 years of climatic data from Montreal was obtained in order for TransChlor to model the time history of chloride ions exposure during the entire service life of the bridge. The main parameters that are investigated in this thesis are the hydraulic diffusion coefficient (DHR), the capillarity diffusion (DCAP) and the chloride diffusion coefficient (DCL). A maximum likelihood estimation procedure is used to determine the distribution of these parameters as a function of core sample observations. It is also found that an important input parameter is the water dissolution ratio for salt. The analyses performed for two depths within the concrete identify different sets of optimal parameters. The dominant concrete parameter for predicting chloride ion content at 25 mm depth is found to be the coefficient of diffusion by capillarity, while the dominant concrete parameter for chloride ion content at 50 mm is the coefficient of hydraulic diffusion.Key Words: TransChlor, Initiation of corrosion, Ion transport model, Concrete properties, Maximum Likelihood, Bridge deterioration." --
