It is eco-friendly, biocompatible, biodegradable, cost-effective, easily available and has high potential to be utilized as an adsorbent. Because of their excellent chelating power, chitosan-based adsorbents have a very high ability to tightly bind the pollutants present in contaminated water and wastewater. Different heavy metals and toxic dyes can be effectively removed. Chapter 1 deals with the chemical, physical, physicochemical and mechanical properties of chitosan and chitosan-based materials. Adsorption data on the removal of heavy metals and different dyes have been compiled. Chapter 2 covers the utilization of chitosan and its derivatives for the adsorptive removal of mercury from water and wastewater. Chapter 3 describes novel chitosan-based nanocomposites for dye removal applications. Chapter 4 discusses the effect of different chitosan modifications on its structure and specific surface area. Chapter 5 covers the applications of chitin and chitosan-based adsorbents for the removal of natural dyes from wastewater. Chapter 6 highlights the adsorptive treatment of textile effluents using chemically modified chitosan as adsorbents. Chapter 7 reviews the applications of chitosan-based adsorbents for the removal of arsenicals. Chapter 8 centers on the adsorption capacity enhancement of chitosan by chemical modification. Chapter 9 focuses on the smart use of surfactants for the modification of chitosan and some other biomaterials and their subsequent use for the removal of contaminants from aqueous solutions. Chapter 10 reviews the use of chitosan-based nanocomposites as adsorbents for the removal of dyes from wastewater. Chapter 11 describes the preparation of uniformly distributed platinum nanoparticles decorated with graphene oxide-chitosan by employing a microwave-assisted method. The nanocomposite can be used for the removal of dye from aqueous solution.

Book excerpt: The progress of society has led to an improvement of the quality of life of a significant number of people. On the other hand, anthropogenic pollution dramatically increased, with serious consequences for the environment and human health. Controlling and remedying environmental pollution is one of the main challenges of our century. Fundamental and applicative research are called to collaborate, involving scientists in the development of realistic and effective systems for the prevention and the removal of pollutants from the environment. Spreading knowledge is among the missions of researchers and this is the aim of this book, offering an updated view on innovative materials and methods for pollutant treatment. It is composed of 18 articles, among them 5 reviews and 13 original articles, dedicated to new adsorbent materials (inorganic, organic, and hybrid materials) for the capture of pollutant species and for their catalytic conversion into non-toxic substances, and to bioremediation approaches to treat contaminated media. Water, air, and soil pollution was investigated, both at the lab and large scale, with special relevance for wastewater treatments for the removal of heavy metals and organic pollutants. We are grateful to "Molecules" for the opportunity to edit the Special Issue on "Innovative Materials and Methods for the Removal of Pollutants from the Environment". We created, for this book, an original cover image, dedicated to the efforts of chemistry to defend the beauty of environment, represented by flowers, against every prejudice that considers chemistry an enemy of life.

Book excerpt: The forms of utility in the wastewater treatment of chitosan-based adsorbents acquired from natural substances have attracted numerous attentions in recent years. The use of chitosan modified adsorbents for removal of the chromium has aroused great interest. When chitosan-based modified adsorbents are considered, they have got large amount of an amino (-NH2) and hydroxyl (-OH) functional groups. Such adsorbents display that they have high activity and therefore they may be extensively utilized in wastewater treatment plants to cast off chromium. In this chapter, the utility outcomes of chitosan-based substances will be explained after applying different parameters to remove Cr (VI) from the aqueous surrounding with the information obtained the use of batch adsorption systems. Application of various chitosan-based adsorbents for Cr (VI) removal application will be demonstrated in a detailed way and they will be discussed within the textual content.
