One of the smallest and most identifiable minority groups in arguably the most race-conscious country in the world, they have not up to now been the focus of serious historical attention. This detailed and descriptive chronological account aims to fill a gap in available histories by providing a comprehensive record of the Chinese in South Africa from the earliest times to the mid-1990s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Black, White or Yellow?: The South African Labour Problem; The Case for and Against the Introduction of Chinese Coolies But that is the principle underlying the arguments of the anti-Asiatics. They would penalise everybody in the Transvaal for the purpose of striking at the rightly or wrongly abused Rand magnate. They vary this phase of the question by characterising the Imperial assent to Chinese labour as a reversion to slavery. What are the facts? What are the economic conditions of the Transvaal? Here then is a colony rich in mineral resources, but whose successful development is dependent upon an abundance of cheap unskilled workers. It abounds in large bodies of auriferous formation, the profitable treatment of which would be impossible in the majority of instances if the bulk of the labourers in the mines were paid on the basis of white men's wages in the Transvaal. It should not be difficult, of course, to secure the natives of South or Central Africa, of whom there are several millions. But the aboriginal is no lover of work, and will avoid it if he can, preferring to exist in lazy comfort on the energies of his wife or wives. Book excerpt: Informative account of the creation, management and operation of the 95,000-strong auxiliary unit recruited in China for service in Europe during the First World War. Financed and administered by the British War Office, it was raised at a time when Allied casualties, on the Western Front and elsewhere, had seriously reduced the availability of the manpower necessary to ensure the maintenance of a combat-fit military force. He shows that the Chinese Labour Corps derived its organisational structure from earlier Chinese units in foreign service, for example the Canton Coolie Corps recruited by the British and French during the second Opium War in the mid-nineteenth century, or the contingents of labourers contracted to the mines of the Transvaal at the turn of the twentieth. In this important and wide-ranging contribution to military history, the author draws on an extensive array of public and unofficial sources to chronicle the saga of a wartime cross-cultural encounter whose legacy remains in the narrative of contemporary Sino-Western relations--From publisher's Website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984. Indentured labour migration in the nineteenth century intersects many of the most serious issues of our own time - racism, Third World poverty, and the arrogance of a great world powers. Indenture suggests lack of freedom and the exploitation of people formed into exile or misadventure. Coming as it did after the abolition of slavery in the British Empire in 1834, in many respects it can be regarded as a replacement of the slave labour system. Indeed, both concerned humanitarians and officials in the nineteenth century, and many historians subsequently have regarded indentured labour merely as 'a new system of slavery'. Many of the articles in this book address themselves to this assertion, whilst investigating the particular variations inherent in their geographic area. The differing patterns of Indian indenture in the West Indies and British Guiana, coming almost immediately after slavery, forms the first section of this book. Attention is given to the Indians engaged in the sugar industries in Mauritius and Fiji, and the rubber industry in Malaya. The use of Pacific Islanders in the Queensland industry is also examined, particularly in the sugar industry which, by the early twentieth century, contained the unique pattern of white, expensive, unionized labour. Other groups dealt with include the aboriginal workers in Australia and the Chinese workers in the Transvaal. Overall, this book is comprehensive and far-reaching in its scope and the complex issues which it raises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1978 opening up of China and her active engagement in economic reformation and modernization, China has become a truly global economic power. These developments have, consequently, had an impact on ethnic Chinese people living across the world. Traditionally, the study of immigrant communities has focused on internal factors, such as the leadership and social organization of the actors inside the communities. This book, however, turns attention to the exogenous factors, which have helped shape the lives of the Chinese diaspora. In doing so, it provides a valuable contribution to the recent literature, which focuses on the effect of globalisation on the Chinese overseas. Using a number of empirical case studies, including the San Francisco Bay, Canada, South Africa and Hungary, it provides an investigation into how China’s contemporary position in the world has affected the identity of the various locales of the Chinese in different continents. Whilst demonstrating the implications of China’s rise on patterns of circular migration and transnational movements, it also explores how the social and economic relations between Chinese communities and their host and ancestral countries have changed. Ultimately, it highlights how China’s rise has brought new economic opportunities and political clout for the Chinese overseas, but at the same time, has created new stereotypes and racial images by association. As an in-depth study of Chinese societies as well as current migration trends, this book will be useful for students of Chinese Studies, Ethnic Studies, Anthropology and Sociology.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Black, White or Yellow?: The South African Labour Problem; The Case for and Against the Introduction of Chinese Coolies In a Situation such as has been created by the shortage of aboriginal labour in South Africa, a practical solution of the problem should not be sacrificed to sentiment. If there are strong presumptive grounds for opposing the employ ment of Chinese in the Transvaal, or elsewhere for that matter, there are even weightier grounds for supporting it. No greater mistake, could be made than to suppose that the Rand mining magnates are alone in their desire for yellow workmen. And the same remark applies to the inference that supporters of Chinese labour are supporters of these million aires - gentlemen who by no means command wide sympathy. The essence of all good government is to afford the greatest benefit to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
