This book was released on 2008-01-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to exclusively use Chinese medical theories and terminology to guide practitioners of Chinese medicine in the use of Western herbs • Written entirely according to the theory, diagnosis, and treatment paradigm of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) • Explains how to combine and modify the standard TCM formulas to non-Chinese herbs suitable for Western practitioners • Includes 58 monographs of common Western healing herbs, detailing how each plant is used clinically The ever-growing number of Chinese medicine practitioners in the West has brought about an amalgamation of many styles of Chinese medicine and various other forms of medicine from around the world. This book addresses the increasing demand for knowledge of how to integrate plants from outside the standard Chinese materia medica into the fold of Chinese medical practices in the West. It is the first in-depth guide to using Western herbs exclusively according to the theories, diagnoses, and treatments of traditional Chinese medicine that harmonizes the unique terminology and theories of TCM with other botanical medicines. The book contains 58 monographs, illustrated with full-color photographs, of herbs commonly used by Western herbalists. Each herb is grouped by the basic categorization for medicinals in Chinese medicine, such as Herbs that Resolve the Exterior and Herbs that Regulate Blood. The monographs detail the energetics, function and indication, channels entered, dosage and preparation, and contraindications of each plant. The author also explains how to use the herbs to modify standard formulas used in everyday Chinese herbal medicine, based on his own clinical experience. An appendix of Western Analogs for Chinese Herbs further highlights 40 Chinese medicinals that have related species growing in the West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese herbal medicine is part of the centuries-old tradition of applying traditional healing techniques in Asian countries. It uses the natural bioactive components of herbs to alleviate symptoms and improve health. Like other branches of Chinese medicine, herbalism also uses a fundamental concept called a vital force of life or Qi. From this book, you'll learn how the imbalance of Qi affects the human body and causes disease and illness. Since this imbalance is considered disharmony of the Qi, the key to eliminating a disease or illness is to restore Qi's natural balance. Ancient Chinese believed we are connected with nature and, therefore, subject to its forces. Elements of nature, like fire, earth, water, metal, and wood, affect our internal equilibrium, and we must keep them in balance with our Qi. Traditional Chinese medicine focuses on treating illnesses by treating the entire body - but the treatment is based on the specific cause of the condition. This principle allows herbalists to use specific treatments for specific conditions, unlike Western Medicine, which generalizes treatment for similar illnesses.

Book excerpt: Definition of Chinese Herbal Medicine Chinese herbal medicine, also known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is a system of medicine that has been practiced in China for thousands of years. It is based on the concept that the human body is a microcosm of the natural world, and that the balance and harmony of the body is maintained by the flow of Qi (vital energy) through the meridians, which are pathways that run throughout the body. In Chinese herbal medicine, herbs are used to balance the flow of Qi and restore the body's natural balance. Herbs are categorized based on their attributes, such as taste, temperature, and meridian tropism. They can be taken orally or topically and are frequently mixed in certain formulas to treat particular ailments. They can be administered as teas, powders, pills, or ointments.

Book excerpt: Chinese herbology (simplified Chinese: 中药学; traditional Chinese: 中藥學; pinyin: zhōngyào xué) is the theory of traditional Chinese herbal therapy, which accounts for the majority of treatments in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). A Nature editorial described TCM as "fraught with pseudoscience", and said that the most obvious reason why it has not delivered many cures is that the majority of its treatments have no logical mechanism of action. The term herbology is misleading in the sense that, while plant elements are by far the most commonly used substances, animal, human, and mineral products are also utilized, among which some are poisonous. In the Huangdi Neijing they are referred to as 毒藥 [duyao] which means toxin, poison, or medicine. Unschuld points out that this is similar etymology to the Greek pharmakon and so he uses the term "pharmaceutic". Thus, the term "medicinal" (instead of herb) is usually preferred as a translation for 药 (pinyin: yào).Research into the effectiveness of traditional Chinese herbal therapy is of poor quality and often tainted by bias, with little or no rigorous evidence of efficacy. There are concerns over a number of potentially toxic Chinese herbs
