Book excerpt: Professor John Dewey (1859-1952) was an American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer, whose thoughts and ideas have been greatly influential in the United States and around the world. He, along with Charles Sanders Peirce and William James, is recognized as one of the founders of the philosophical school of Pragmatism. He is also known as the father of functional psychology; he was a leading representative of the progressive movement in U. S. schooling during the first half of the 20th century. Along with the historian Charles Beard, economists Thorstein Veblen and James Harvey Robinson, Dewey is one of the founders of The New School for Social Research. Although she was of Chinese-British ancestry, she published under the Japanese pseudonym, Onoto Watanna. She began writing stories at a very early age. She was only fourteen years old when one of her stories was accepted for publication by Montreal newspaper. Before long she had articles published in the United States in several popular magazines, notably the Ladies' Home Journal. Eventually, her compositions were accepted by the prestigious Saturday Evening Post as well as by other popular periodicals. She moved from this to writing novels, capitalizing on her mixed ancestry to pass herself off as a Japanese American by the name of "Onoto Watanna." Under this pseudonym she published Japanese romance novels and short stories, becoming widely read throughout the United States. Her second major novel, A Japanese Nightingale was published in 1900. Her other works include The Heart of Hyacinth (1903), The Love of Azalea (1904), A Japanese Blossom (1906), Daughters of Nijo (1907), Tama (1910), Sunny-San (1922) and Cattle (1923).

Book excerpt: In the first book to focus on African American attitudes toward Japan and China, Marc Gallicchio examines the rise and fall of black internationalism in the first half of the twentieth century. This daring new approach to world politics failed in its effort to seek solidarity with the two Asian countries, but it succeeded in rallying black Americans in the struggle for civil rights. Black internationalism emphasized the role of race or color in world politics and linked the domestic struggle of African Americans with the freedom struggle of emerging nations "of color," such as India and much of Africa. In the early twentieth century, black internationalists, including W. E. B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey, embraced Japan as a potential champion of the darker races, despite Japan's imperialism in China. After Pearl Harbor, black internationalists reversed their position and identified Nationalist China as an ally in the war against racism. In the end, black internationalism was unsuccessful as an interpretation of international affairs. The failed quest for alliances with Japan and China, Gallicchio argues, foreshadowed the difficulty black Americans would encounter in seeking redress for American racism in the international arena.

Book excerpt: Okakura Kakuzo (1863-1913), also known as Okakura Tenshin, was a Japanese scholar who contributed to the development of arts in Japan. Outside Japan, he is chiefly remembered today as the author of The Book of Tea (1906) in which he introduces the term "Teaism" and how tea has affected nearly every aspect of Japanese culture, thought, and life. He attended Tokyo Imperial University, where he first met and studied under Ernest Fenollosa. In 1890, Okakura was one of the principal founders of the first Japanese fine-arts academy, Tokyo bijutsu gakko (Tokyo School of Fine Arts). Later, he also founded Nihon Bijutsuin (Japan Institute of Fine Arts). He wrote all of his main works in English. Okakura researched Japan's traditional art and travelled to Europe, the United States, China and India. He gave the world an image of Japan as a member of the East, in the face of a massive onslaught of Western culture. His other works include The Ideals of the East (1903) and The Awakening of Japan (1904).

Dewey and his wife, Alice, arrived in Shanghai on May 1, 1919, just days before student demonstrators took to the streets of Peking to protest the decision of the Allies in Paris to cede the German held territories in Shandong province to Japan. Their demonstrations on May Fourth excited and energized Dewey, and he ended up staying in China for two years, leaving in July 1921. In these two years, well aware of both Japanese expansionism into China and the attraction of Bolshevism to some Chinese, Dewey advocated that Americans support China's transformation and that Chinese base this transformation in education and social reforms, not revolution. Their works and letters from China and Japan describing their experiences to their family were published in 1920.
