Book Synopsis China and the Birth of Globalization in the 16th Century by : Dennis O. Flynn
Download or read book China and the Birth of Globalization in the 16th Century written by Dennis O. Flynn and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Including 11 essays published over the last 15 years, this volume by Dennis O. Flynn and Arturo Giráldez concerns the origins and early development of globalization. It opens with their 1995 "Silver Spoon" essay and a theoretical essay published in 2002. Subsequent sections deal with Pacific Ocean exchanges, interconnections between the Spanish, Ottoman, Japanese and Chinese empires, and the necessity of multidisciplinary approaches to global history. The volume follows the evolution of the authors' thinking concerning the central role of China in the global silver trade, as well as interrelations among silver and non-silver markets. Research before 2002 paved the way for development of a coherent 'Birth of Globalization' narrative that portrays economic factors in the context of powerful epidemiological, ecological, demographic, and cultural forces. In the final essay Flynn and Giráldez argue for incorporating the work of all academic disciplines when attempting to understand the history of globalization, advocating an inclusive historical data base which recognizes contextual realities and an inductive process of reasoning.

Book Synopsis The Rise and Fall of a Public Debt Market in 16th-Century China by : Wing-kin Puk
Download or read book The Rise and Fall of a Public Debt Market in 16th-Century China written by Wing-kin Puk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-11-16 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), the government invited merchants to deliver grain in return for salt certificates with which merchants drew salt as reward. The salt certificate therefore represented a national debt, denominated in salt, the government thereby owed merchants. A speculative market of salt certificates was created in Yangzhou and brought into being powerful financiers in the early 17th century. The government, financially hard pressed, abolished the speculative market of salt certificates by franchising these financiers in return for their hereditary obligation to pay salt certificate surcharge. China was therefore deprived of a possibility to develop a public debt market. This story is a testimony to Fernand Braudel’s argument of the "nondevelopment" of Capitalism in China.

Book Synopsis Taxation and Governmental Finance in Sixteenth-Century Ming China by : Ray Huang
Download or read book Taxation and Governmental Finance in Sixteenth-Century Ming China written by Ray Huang and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1974 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1974, this is a detailed study of the financial administration of the Chinese government during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), with particular attention to the sixteenth century, a topic about which very little has been published either in Chinese or any Western language. Professor Huang has worked through an enormous quantity and variety of source material - in particular the 133 substantial volumes of the Ming Veritable Records - and has compared the documents on financial matters with the entries in local gazetteers. The complicated workings of government finance present great difficulties to all specialists in Chinese financial and administrative history and in different branches of local Chinese history from the fifteenth century onwards. Professor Huang's study will provide all such researchers with an authoritative work of reference.

Book Synopsis Pictures and Visuality in Early Modern China by : Craig Clunas
Download or read book Pictures and Visuality in Early Modern China written by Craig Clunas and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2006-03-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pictures and Visuality in Early Modern China is not simply a survey of sixteenth-century images, but rather, a thorough and thoughtful examination of visual culture in China's Ming Dynasty, one that considers images wherever they appeared—not only paintings, but also illustrated books, maps, ceramic bowls, lacquered boxes, painted fans, and even clothing and tomb pictures. Clunas's theory of visuality incorporates not only the image and the object upon which it is placed but also the culture which produced and purchased it. Economic changes in sixteenth-century China—the rapid expansion of trade routes and a growing class of consumers—are thus intricately bound up with the evolution of the image itself. Pictures and Visuality in Early Modern China will be a touchstone for students of Chinese history, art, and culture.
