By developing knowledge and skills within pain management and prevention nurses are in a strong position to ensure that they, the child and their family are in control of the pain and that the pain is not in control of the child. Developing these skills is ultimately rewarding both personally and professionally and nurses should be encouraged to scrutinize their practice carefully and identify areas where improvements could be made. Aim: to further investigate differences in-hospital pain assessmentbetween nurses, children and parents after adenotonsillectomy.Materials and Methods:After IRB approval, a prospective cohort study was carried out investigating intra-hospital painafter adenotonsillectomy in daytime surgery. Inclusion: eligible were children between 6 and12 years old, ASA 1&2. Exclusion: known mental retardation.Instruments: a. the FLACC-scale scored by 2 independently nurses (1 permanent researchnurse) at 2h and 4h postoperative; b. a CAS consists of two extremes, u2018no painu2019 (white color)and u2018most painu2019 (red color), on which both the child and parent slide a marker on a vertical lineto indicate the childu2019s pain at 2h and 4h postoperative (0 indicating no pain and 10 very muchpain). Statistics: 1. agreement between nurses FLACC scores using intraclass correlationcoefficient (ICC); 2. ICC between child/parental CAS scores; 3. discriminant validity:McNemar test after dichotomizing pain scores into 2 groups (non to mild pain vs. moderate tosevere pain) using cut-off values of respectively u22653 on the FLACC and u22653 on thechild/parental CAS ratings.Results and Discussion:This study included 57 children (64 % girls) with mean age of 108 (months), SDu00b125.7.
