Download or read book Economic and Social Change in a Midland Town written by Roy A. Church and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was first published in 1966. The city of Nottingham grew from the nucleus of a smaller and older town to become one of the nation's leading industrial centres, and although it was not a product of the industrial revolution Nottingham was completely transformed by it. For most of the nineteenth century the major activities were the production of hosiery by an industry whose methods, organization, and outlook remained traditional for many decades, and the manufacture of machine-made lace, a progressive and mechanized industry which from its early years featured factory production. This text explores the relationship between the development of power based machinery and the more traditional crafts of the area.

Book Synopsis The Education of Children Engaged in Industry in England 1833-1876 by : Adam Henry Robson
Download or read book The Education of Children Engaged in Industry in England 1833-1876 written by Adam Henry Robson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1931, this title looks at the education received by children working in industry in England between 1833 and 1876. The industrial revolution created more demand for child labour than ever before, but there were few laws to protect the children involved. School was not compulsory for children until the 1880s, but there were new laws brought in and enforced to reduce the numbers of hours they were allowed to work in industry in 1833 and subsequently in 1844. This title deals with the education of children during that time and the implications of the laws introduced.
Book Synopsis Childhood and Child Labour in Industrial England by : Katrina Honeyman
Download or read book Childhood and Child Labour in Industrial England written by Katrina Honeyman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this collection is to bring together representative examples of the most recent work that is taking an understanding of children and childhood in new directions. The two key overarching themes are diversity: social, economic, geographical, and cultural; and agency: the need to see children in industrial England as participants - even protagonists - in the process of historical change, not simply as passive recipients or victims. Contributors address such crucial subjects as the varied experience of work; poverty and apprenticeship; institutional care; the political voice of children; child sexual abuse; and children and education. This volume, therefore, includes some of the best, innovative work on the history of children and childhood currently being written by both younger and established scholars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of sweating and the origins of low pay legislation are of fundamental social, economic and moral importance. Although difficult to define, sweating, according to a select committee established to investigate the issue, was characterised by long hours, poor working conditions and above all by low pay. By the beginning of the twentieth century the government estimated that up to a third of the British workforce could be classed as sweated labour, and for the first time in a century began to think about introducing legislation to address the problem. Whilst historians have written much on unemployment, poverty relief and other such related social and industrial issues, relatively little work has been done on the causes, extent and character of sweated labour. That work which has been done has tended to focus on the tailoring trades in London and Leeds, and fails to give a broad overview of the phenomenon and how it developed and changed over time. In contrast, this volume adopts a broad national and long-run approach, providing a more holistic understanding of the subject. Rejecting the argument that sweating was merely a London or gender related problem, it paints a picture of a widespread and constantly shifting pattern of sweated labour across the country, that was to eventually persuade the government to introduce legislation in the form of the 1909 Trades Board Act. It was this act, intended to combat sweated labour, which was to form the cornerstone of low pay legislation, and the barrier to the introduction of a minimum wage, for the next 90 years.
