Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than one million American children are schooled by their parents. As their ranks grow, home schoolers are making headlines by winning national spelling bees and excelling at elite universities. The few studies conducted suggest that homeschooled children are academically successful and remarkably well socialized. Yet we still know little about this alternative to one of society's most fundamental institutions. Beyond a vague notion of children reading around the kitchen table, we don't know what home schooling looks like from the inside. Sociologist Mitchell Stevens goes behind the scenes of the homeschool movement and into the homes and meetings of home schoolers. What he finds are two very different kinds of home education--one rooted in the liberal alternative school movement of the 1960s and 1970s and one stemming from the Christian day school movement of the same era. Stevens explains how this dual history shapes the meaning and practice of home schooling today. In the process, he introduces us to an unlikely mix of parents (including fundamentalist Protestants, pagans, naturalists, and educational radicals) and notes the core values on which they agree: the sanctity of childhood and the primacy of family in the face of a highly competitive, bureaucratized society. Kingdom of Children aptly places home schoolers within longer traditions of American social activism. It reveals that home schooling is not a random collection of individuals but an elaborate social movement with its own celebrities, networks, and characteristic lifeways. Stevens shows how home schoolers have built their philosophical and religious convictions into the practical structure of the cause, and documents the political consequences of their success at doing so. Ultimately, the history of home schooling serves as a parable about the organizational strategies of the progressive left and the religious right since the 1960s.Kingdom of Children shows what happens when progressive ideals meet conventional politics, demonstrates the extraordinary political capacity of conservative Protestantism, and explains the subtle ways in which cultural sensibility shapes social movement outcomes more generally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Kids and Kingdom challenges the traditional view that Jesus was deeply concerned over children. Instead, it is argued that despite the Synoptic authors' attempts to convince us that children are fully included in the kingdom of God--that ""Jesus loves the little children""--their presentations fail to conceal images of household disruption and alienation of children brought about by Jesus' eschatological movement. After establishing what Greco-Roman and Jewish sources reveal about children by the end of the first century, a deconstructive literary approach is applied to the Synoptic Gospels, foregrounding children over other characters in relation to Jesus' adult ministry. Murphy scrutinizes prominent healing narratives involving children, and teachings involving children such as ""The Child in the Midst"" (Mark 9:36-37 and parallels), ""One of These Little Ones"" (Mark 9:42 and parallels), and ""Let the Young Children Come to Me"" (Mark 10:13-16 and parallels). These are examined against sayings of Jesus relativizing family ties and the lifestyle indicative of the radical call to discipleship in the Synoptic narratives. Fundamentally, this study does not seek to resolve but to highlight the tensions in the Synoptic Gospels between attempts at child inclusivity and the radical demands of discipleship. "

How did early Christ-followers use a childlike condition to articulate concrete qualifications for God’s kingdom? Many people today romanticize Jesus’s welcoming of little children against the backdrop of the ancient world or project modern Christian conceptions of children onto biblical texts. Eschewing such a Christian exceptionalist approach to history, this book explores how the Gospel of Matthew, 1 Corinthians, and the Gospel of Thomas each associate childlikeness with God’s kingdom within their socio-cultural milieus. The book investigates these three texts vis-à-vis philosophical, historical, and archaeological materials concerning ancient children and childhood, revealing that early Christ-followers deployed various aspects of children to envision ideal human qualities or bodily forms. Calling the modern reader’s attention to children’s intellectual incapability, asexuality, and socio-political utility in ancient intellectual thought and everyday practices, the book sheds new light on the rich and diverse theological visions that early Christ-followers pursued by means of images of children.

Book excerpt: What source material outside of the Bible was used by the authors of the Gospels? How does patch-stitching work? How might religious terminology commonly used in ancient Israel be filtered and given a different meaning by a Gentile, pagan audience? What implications did this hold for the rise of Christianity? How were the crucifixion scenarios constructed? Were all of the sources used in their construction Biblical? Did the writings of Josephus influence the written Word? How did Jesus evade arrest? How did he operate a supply and intelligence network which reached into the palace of Herod the tetrarch and into the temple ? Details of its operation such as departmentalization and recognition signals are noted. How did Jesus send a message to Herod along this grapevine? What were the circumstances of his arrest? What was Judas role? The evidence holds out the intriguing possibility that his role as traitor may not be accurate. What were the charges? Based upon the Gospels, was Jesus sentenced to death for blaspheming? According to the Gospels, was a terrorists a member of Jesus inner circle? If a criminal profile was put together for Jesus, using the Gospels as our source, what would it look like? What would it tell the law enforcement personnel of his day about him? What was his mission from God? How did he fulfill his role? Why did he have to die? How has his message and its implications changed the world in positive ways and ways not so positive? How did he radically redefine western culture? How does the world still grapple with the implications of what he said and what he was about?
