Book excerpt: To all of us too-serious, on-the-edge, busy-and-preoccupied adults, Alan Wright offers a reminder of Jesus' words regarding the heart of the child: "Of such is the kingdom of God." In this new trade-paper edition of A Chance at Childhood Again, Wright reveals how we can recapture the unbridled freedom we once relished. As he watched his own son discover the world for the first time, he realized that the carefree, wonder-filled attitude of youth is possible in adulthood. As we look back with nostalgia and appreciation at the simple pleasures of our growing-up years, Wright explains, we will rediscover how our days can be characterized by a spirit of adventure and wide-eyed joy in the Lord.

Book Synopsis A Childlike Faith by : Tonya King Richard
Download or read book A Childlike Faith written by Tonya King Richard and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Friday night, August 7, 1987, my three youngest children-Amanda (eleven), Kevin (nine), and Craig (eight)-went with their daddy, my cousin Coby (seventeen, we had taken him in to live with us), and Amanda's friend Samantha to see the movie He-Man: Masters of the Universe. Craig, our youngest, had just celebrated his eighth birthday on Monday on the third (he was our seventh wedding anniversary gift). Our oldest daughter Michelle (fourteen years) had asked to go "eat and ride" with a friend and would be back by ten o'clock that night. I stayed home to wait for their return. My family would never return home on Aster Dr. The strangest fact about what happened that fateful night was that Amanda knew she was going to die. She did not know when or how. She never seemed to be afraid, but in Amanda's last eight months on this earth, she began to ask me and other family members, "Am I going to die?" She would also ask this strange question about her younger brothers whenever they fell ill or if they were injured while playing. This is not a happily-ever-after type fairy tale. No one except for God and the hosts of heaven can rejoice the death of a child. This is a true, gut-wrenching story about love, gratitude, relationships, mistakes, forgiveness through repentance, and, most of all, faith. I know with every fiber of my being my three children are with God in heaven. You see, they believed in Jesus more than they believed in anyone! After losing them, I can clearly see God had a plan for their short lives here on this earth. As a repentant, forgiving, born-again Christian, I am simply...His witness. God had a plan for my three youngest children. This is their story, or, as some say, "their legacy of love."

Book Synopsis Childlike Peace in Merleau-Ponty and Levinas by : Brock Bahler
Download or read book Childlike Peace in Merleau-Ponty and Levinas written by Brock Bahler and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By examining the parent-child relationship, Childlike Peace in Merleau-Ponty and Levinas argues that the primordial structure of our personal encounters with others should be understood as a dialectical spiral. Drawing on the work of twentieth-century philosophers Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Emmanuel Levinas, and informed by recent advances in cognitive neuroscience and child development, Brock Bahler develops a phenomenological description of the parent-child relationship in order to articulate an account of intersubjectivity that is fundamentally ethically oriented, dialogical, and mutually dynamic. This dialectical spiral—in contrast to Cartesian tradition of the subject and the Hegelian master-slave dialectic—suggests that our lives are equiprimordially interwoven with both the richness of mutual engagement and the responsibility to be for-the-other. The parent-child relationship provides the basis for a theoretical account of intersubjectivity that is marked by a creative interaction between self and other that cannot be reduced to an economic exchange, a totalizing structure, or a unilateral asymmetrical responsibility. In conversation with the philosophical thought of Merleau-Ponty, Levinas, Hegel, Sartre, and Freud, as well as recent research in cognitive neuroscience and child development, this work will be of interest for those working in the fields of continental philosophy, embodied cognition, philosophy of childhood, psychoanalysis, psychology, philosophy for children (P4C), and education.

Download or read book In Awe written by John O'Leary and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The #1 bestselling author of On Fire shows us how to recapture and harness our childlike sense of wonder in order to become more engaged, successful, and fulfilled. “Engaging . . . O’Leary encourages us to see the world through a child’s eyes.”—Mitch Albom, author of Tuesdays with Morrie There once was a time when we joyfully raised our hands to answer questions, connected easily with others, believed that anything was possible, and fearlessly jumped into new experiences. A time when we viewed each day not as something to endure, but as a marvelous gift to explore and savor—when we danced through our lives in awe of the ordinary moments and eager for the promise of tomorrow. Unfortunately, that’s far from our experience today. Instead, we feel disconnected and jaded. Social media reminds us that we don’t measure up, and the mainstream media barrages us with constant negativity. Many of us find ourselves caught in a life of dogged responsibility and mind-numbing repetition. The daily struggle to earn a living has caused us to lose the sense of wonder with which we once greeted every day. In his new book, bestselling author John O’Leary invites us to consider that it is possible to once again navigate the world as a child does. Identifying five senses children innately possess and that we’ve lost touch with as we age, O’Leary shares emotional, humorous, and inspirational stories intertwined with fascinating new research showing how each of us can reclaim our childlike joy, and why doing so will change how we interact with the world. In Awe reveals how we can regain that ability to see fresh insights, reach for new solutions, and live our best lives.
Download or read book Unfettered written by Mandy Smith and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Smith's sage advice will aid Christians in recognizing the simple joys of practicing their faith."--Publishers Weekly Western culture is in a tailspin, and Christian faith is entangled in it: we do kingdom things in empire ways. Western approaches to faith leave us feeling depressed, doubting, anxious, and burned out. We know something is wrong with the way we do faith and church in the West, but we're so steeped in it that we don't know where to begin to break old habits. Popular pastor and speaker Mandy Smith invites us to be unfettered from the deeply ingrained habits of Western culture so we can do kingdom things in kingdom ways again. She explores how we can be transformed by new postures and habits that help us see God already at work in and around us. The way forward isn't more ideas, programs, and problem-solving but in Jesus's surprising invitation to the kingdom through childlikeness. Ultimately, rediscovering childlike habits is a way for us to remember how to be human. Unfettered helps us reimagine how to follow God with our whole selves again and join with God's mission in the world. Foreword by Walter Brueggemann.

The son of a preacher, eighteen-year-old Tim Timberlake learned to appreciate the extraordinary value and gift of each minute of every day the hard way through the tragic and sudden loss of his father. Now a pastor himself, Tim inspires others to approach each day in a way that they live out their own God-given purposes and passions. Comprised of thirty bite-size chapters designed to be read over 30 days, The Power of 1440 is a day-by-day manual of encouragement, including strategies to: Shift your mindset from mundane to miraculous Understand the first step to becoming great is being grateful Forgive those who hurt you and free yourself to be fully alive Stop focusing on who you were and zero in on who you are becoming Every day should be magnificent, not mundane; filled with delight, not drudgery; and a grand adventure, not a grind. In The Power of 1440, Pastor Tim shows how it is possible to make today—and every day—truly remarkable.
