Book excerpt: Excerpt from Childhood Conversions In the days of the Lord Jesus upon earth, They brought young children to him, that he should touch them; and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, 'he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not; for of such is the kingdom of heaven. How beautiful and encouraging, to those who work in childhood fields, is the following paragraph: And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, and said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Conversion: Showing How Children and Young People Can Be Led to Jesus and Prepared for Church Membership I AM sure that the Church of Jesus Christ is sadly neglecting the children. It is true that we have our Sun day schools and other organizations for the training of children in the knowledge of the Word and God, but there is not that definite work for their conversion that there should be. N 0 other form of Christian effort brings such imme diate, such large, and such lasting results as work for the conversion of children. It has many advantages over other forms of work. First of all, children are more easily led to Christ than adults. In the second place, they are more likely to stay converted than those apparently con verted at a later period of life. They also make better Christians, as they do not have so much to unlearn as those who have grown Old in sin. They have more years of service before them. A man converted at sixty is a a soul saved plus ten years of service; a child saved at ten is a soul saved plus sixty years of service. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conversion of Children: Can It Be Effected? How Young? Will They Remain Steadfast? What Means to Be Used? When to Be Received and How Trained in the Church? Children are converted, just as adults are. The child is father of the man. We love God because He first loved us. It is not philosophy that shows us that God has loved us, it is Christ Jesus, and Him crucified. This the child can see, even more clearly than the adult. The nearer we are to birth, the nearer are we to the new birth. The oldest, the wisest, has to enter Christ's kingdom as a little child. This not only means that he is to come in a child-like spirit, but also that the method of coming is the same: that is, that there is the same inward process. I remember a child who heard a sermon addressed to adults on the text - "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock." After service he took to his father a rude drawing of a kingly personage, knocking for admission at a closed door. The father saw the impression made by the truth, and kissing his son tenderly, said, "That is it, my boy, let Him in!" Book excerpt: Excerpt from Parent, Child, and Church The following pages have been written with the conviction that others have experienced perplexities similar to my own in passing from a religious childhood, through a religious youth, to a religious manhood without ever having consciously experienced conversion, and still finding no place for that sort of religious development in such preaching as I was permitted to hear; and instead of deriving comfort from religious services, being, rather, made miserable, lest my religious life was seriously at fault somewhere without being able to discover just where. Since working in the pastorate I have made the acquaintance of several young people all of whom were trying to fit the experience of conversion, as popularly preached, into their lives with the same unsatisfactory results that I had experienced in my youthful days. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dissemination of classical material to children has long been a major form of popularization with far-reaching effects, although until very recently it has received almost no attention within the growing field of classical reception studies. This volume explores the ways in which children encountered the world of ancient Greece and Rome in Britain and the United States over a century-long period beginning in the 1850s, as well as adults' literary responses to their own childhood encounters with antiquity. Rather than discussing the role of classics in education, it focuses on books read for enjoyment, and on two genres of children's literature in particular: the myth collection and the historical novel. The tradition of myths retold as children's stories is traced in the work of writers and illustrators from Nathaniel Hawthorne and Charles Kingsley to Roger Lancelyn Green and Ingri and Edgar Parin D'Aulaire, while the discussion of historical fiction focuses particularly on the roles of nationality and gender in the construction of an ancient world for modern children. The book concludes with an investigation of the connections between childhood and antiquity made by writers for adults, including James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and H.D. Recognition of the fundamental role in children's literature of adults' ideas about what children want or need is balanced throughout by attention to the ways in which child readers have made such works their own. The formative experiences of antiquity discussed throughout help to explain why despite growing uncertainty about the appeal of antiquity to modern children, the classical past remains perennially interesting and inspiring.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament Conversions: Their Manifoldness West, the writer was frequently consulted by members of his congregation regarding the validity of their conversion. After witnessing a revival of religion or listening to the experience of those converted at such a season, they often entertained doubts as to the genuineness of their own conversion. They had accepted the general impression that the means which arrest the sinner's attention, the path through which he is led to the Cross, and the feelings expe rienced on accepting the Saviour, are exactly the same in all cases. The writer has spent many an hour in prayer and in efforts to con vince such that men are not all converted in the same way, made to pass through the same struggles, or to experience the same joys. This has seemed to many like a new revela ton. It has brought them from painful bond age to the liberty of the children of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Confessions of a Convert The following chapters were first published, in substance, in the American Catholic magazine, the "Ave Maria," in 1906-1907, and it is by the kind permission of the Editor, Father Hudson, that they are now reprinted, with a few additions and corrections. During the time that has elapsed since their serial appearance, the writer has received a very large number of applications that they should be issued in book form; and after long hesitation, he has acceded to these requests. He hesitated partly because it appeared to him really doubtful whether their issue would be of any real service at all, partly because he occasionally contemplated adding considerably to them, and annexing to them further "confessions of a convert" since his conversion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heaven or the Glory to Be Revealed Eternity has ever held consuming interest for the writer. From childhood it has fascinated him. But since conversion there has, of course, been a deeper and more spiritual love for the subject. Indifference to it he has never been able to understand. Years ago we listened to one declare that God is averse to man thinking about heaven; that he has a work to do, and should, apart from eternal considerations, abandon himself to it. While agreeing perfectly with the idea of absolute abandonment to our work, we were unable to understand how thought of eternity could deleteriously affect such abandonment. Thought of hell ought to move us to snatch men as brands from its awful burning. Thought of heaven should set our hearts aflame with desire to share its glorious life and rewards. It seemed strange then, and it seems strange now, that God, if there be no high purpose to serve, should have so* much to say about eternity in His Word.
