Book excerpt: Excerpt from Child Life and Literature The aim of this book is to call the teacher's attention to the choice of material in literature best suited to the nature and needs of elementary school pupils. To this end a gen eral survey is made of the field of child psychology, and a course in reading and literature is developed in harmony with the dominant mental characteristics and natural ih terests of children. It is gratifying to notice a tendency on the part of educa tional authorities to enlarge the school curriculum in liter ature. School readers alone must fail to interest children in reading. Complete units should be presented instead of extracts. Every phase of child life should be reflected; and all material should possess true literary merit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Child Life in Tale and Fable: A Second Reader A taste for good reading is an essential part of an education. To develop this taste, while helping the child to learn to read, this book has been prepared. It is important, in the beginning, that the child should like What he reads, and that the lessons should not be so difficult as to mar his pleasure in reading. For this reason great care has been taken to make attractive lessons, Within the child's ability to read and understand. The stories, as the name of the book suggests, have been carefully selected from the legends, tales, and fables, which, by their genuineness and truth to life, have come to form a literature for children. The longer selections have been divided into parts of sufficient length for one lesson. By doing this it has been possible to introduce versions and adaptations of tales of real classical value. The more difficult words are placed at the head of the lessons, and are marked for pronunciation. A key to these marks is given and should be carefully studied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old-Time Child-Life These truthful sketches have been written with a desire to turn the attention of young people to the charms of quiet country life. They are offered to those older boys and girls who, while still retaining a simple taste in reading, have ceased to be contented with verbal pap. So much impressed am I, however, with the dignity of oldtime rural life that I may, in treating of it, have sometimes talked over the heads of my desired audience. If, there fore, these experiences are told in a style too formal for the taste and capacity of the age for which they are designed, it will be partly because of such frame of mind, and partly because I have flattered myself that mothers may like to road the little book to their children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Child Life in Prose The unexpectedly favorable reception of the poetical compilation entitled "Child Life" has induced its publishers to call for the preparation of a companion volume of prose stories and sketches, gathered, like the former, from the literature of widely separated nationalities and periods. Illness, preoccupation, and the inertia of unelastic years would have deterred me from the undertaking, but for the assistance which I have had from the lady whose services are acknowledged in the preface to "Child Life." I beg my young readers, therefore, to understand that I claim little credit for my share in the work, since whatever merit it may have is largely due to her taste and judgment. It may be well to admit, in the outset, that the book is as much for child-lovers, who have not outgrown their child-heartedness in becoming mere men and women, as for children themselves; that it is as much about childhood, as for it. If not the wisest, it appears to me that the happiest people in the world are those who still retain something of the child's creative faculty of imagination, which makes atmosphere and color, sun and shadow, and boundless horizons, out of what seems to prosaic wisdom most inadequate material, - a tuft of grass, a mossy rock, the rain-pools of a passing shower, a glimpse of sky and cloud, a waft of west-wind, a bird's flutter and song. For the child is always something of a poet; if he cannot analyze, like Wordsworth and Tennyson, the emotions which expand his being, even as the fulness of life bursts open the petals of a flower, he finds with them all Nature plastic to his eye and hand. The soul of genius and the heart of childhood are one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Child life is a profession that draws on the insights of history, sociology, anthropology and psychology to serve children and families in many critical stress points in their lives, but especially when they are ill, injured or disabled and encounter the hosts of caregivers and institutions that collaborate to make them well. Children and their families can become overwhelmed by the task of understanding and navigating the healthcare environment and continue to face challenges through their daily encounters. It is the job of child life professionals to provide care and guidance in these negotiations to serve as culture brokers, interpreters of the healthcare apparatus to family and child and the child to medical professionals. Despite the best efforts to provide quality, sensitive psychosocial care to children and their families, they remain vulnerable to lingering aftereffects. The goal of this revised edition is to help prepare child life specialists to deliver the highest level of care to children and families in the context of these changing realities. Each chapter has been substantially revised and two new chapters have been added. This book will be a valuable resource for not only child life specialists but also nurses, occupational and recreational therapists, social workers and other hospital personnel.

I have had this end constantly in my mind, though I have made no attempt, nor had 1 any intent, to write in a style for the perusal of children; for I have not found that intelligent children care much 'or long for such hooks, except in the very rare cases of the few great hooks that have heen written for children, and which are loved and read as much hy the old as hy the young. Out into the great world he looked and longed; but no, there was no hope, no sun shine; and Charlie's lovely blue eyes almost filled with tears; and little gasps came un willingly from his throat; and he clutched Eliza tightly with his left hand to make sure that the housekeeper hadn't spirited her away also. Eliza was not his little sister, for Charlie had no little sister, nor little brother, and no mother, and almost no father - or so it seemed to Charlie, for his father was usually away when he was awake. So a very sad little boy he had reason to be, only that he was healthy, and bright and sunny in temperament, and was used to his lonely life; and with Tom and Eliza for company he was generally happy. But Tom was gone! And Eliza had so little to say. Now, Eliza was - yes, you've guessed it, a doll. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Child Life: A Collection of Poems Having had occasion, some time since, to look over several volumes of selected verse intended for juvenile readers, and noticing in nearly all of them much that seemed lacking in literary merit or adaptation, it occurred to the compiler of this volume that, taking advantage of the merits as well as deficiencies of existing publications in this department, a selection might be made combining simplicity with a certain degree of literary excellence, without on the one hand descending to silliness, or, on the other rising above the average comprehension of childhood. How far the present volume has made this thought a reality it is not for him to decide, lie can only say that it is the result of a patient examination of the accessible juvenile literature of our own and other countries. Our English tongue is peculiarly rich in the lore of home and fireside; and the editor has availed himself of selections from the folk-songs and ballads of continental Europe, Where a doubt existed in regard to any particular poem he has not hesitated to take counsel of those whose judgment seemed to him reliable; and, in more than one instance, he has deferred to the instinctive and natural criticisms of childhood. It is but just to acknowledge his obligations to kind friends whose valuable suggestions have materially aided him; and, in an especial manner, his indebtedness to Lucy Larcom, so well known in connexion with "Our Young Folks,"who has given him the benefit of her cultivated taste and very thorough acquaintance with whatever is valuable in the poetical literature of Child-Life. Doubtless all readers will miss some favorite pieces which the necessity of giving as great a variety as possible to Lite compilation compelled him to pass over. He trusts, however, that a very large proportion of all that is permanently valuable will be found in these pages. He hopes and believes that no well-grounded exceptions can be taken to the character of the selections in a moral and religious point of view, lie has endeavored, avoiding everything like cant and sectarianism, to find expression for the reverence, love, and grateful trust, so natural and beautiful in those whom the Divine Teacher held up as examples to His disciples: "Of such is the kingdom of Heaven." The deep significance of His language is confirmed by the spiritual experience of all ages "The paths that lead us to God's throne Are worn by children's feet."
