Download or read book Life in the IAS written by Ram Varma and published by Rupa Publications. This book was released on 2017 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 1 November 1966, India saw the birth of its 17th state, Haryana, carved out of Punjab. Two years prior, Ram Varma had graduated from the prestigious IAS Academy and was allocated to Punjab. He was then transferred to Haryana, which was a state in turmoil and had within a year infamously been stamped as a land of political infidelity-'Aya Rams and Gaya Rams'. Having served in various capacities from subdivisional magistrate to chief secretary, Ram Varma relives the history of Haryana in the first three formative decades. An ambitious work, it covers the whole range of the state's history-its inception, the chief ministers at the helm, the bureaucracy, the infrastructure reconstruction programme, including the innovative lift-irrigation projects and much more-as captured against the nation's history which too was crafting a resurgent identity. The book pivots its central narrative around the portrayal of the three Lals of Haryana-Bansi Lal, Devi Lal and Bhajan Lal-who dominated the scene. Barring a few years, Haryana was ruled by the Lals, who chased each other in and out of office. The author has watched this fledgling state grow during their respective reigns, had keenly observed the workings of each chief minister and was a witness to the fascinating drama of its transformation from a poor, resource-less state to a progressive, front-ranking state during his tenure. Packed with interesting anecdotes, tongue-in-cheek observations, behind-the-scenes political happenings and personal recollections, Life in the IAS captures the extraordinary journey of Haryana, its three towering leaders-the Lals-and author Ram Varma who takes the ups and downs of his distinguished career in his rollicking stride, experiencing thrills and triumphs, trials and tribulations.

Book Synopsis Ruling Dynasties of Independent India - Volume 1 by : RAVINDRA PADALKAR
Download or read book Ruling Dynasties of Independent India - Volume 1 written by RAVINDRA PADALKAR and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2021-01-16 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written to give an overall idea of dynastic politics in India, keeping in mind that a citizen of India should know more about the politicians who are in the government and form policies and so on to take the country in the proper direction. Even if there are two related members, it is considered as dynasty and is included in this book. Wherever possible, family trees, as well as the assets of our politicians, are shown. It was natural to start with the Nehru Gandhi family, being one of the largest and longest-ruling families at the helm of all affairs. Then state wise, the families are chosen and the account is presented. As the content is extensive, the book is published in two volumes. States are chosen alphabetically. So even if Nehru Gandhi family is in Volume 1, Tamilnadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh are in Volume 2. Early rulers in Indian history used to hand over the throne to their sons and then to the next generations for generations till some significant event upset the process, mostly conspiracies by persons like very close aides of the king or a revolt. Similar lines were followed even during our democracy, passing on the rule to the next generation, which gave rise to dynastic rule. Indian politics has witnessed a large spectrum of politicians from various fields. Initially, it consisted mainly of leaders from the field of law. Now, we find that we have eminent personalities from sports fields, actors, actresses, superstars from the silver screen. The literary field is no exception; we have writers, poets, and so on. Economists find a special place in the political arena. Politics does not shun even criminals or a few dacoits who then turned to politics after surrendering. Businessmen, kings or princes from princely states, as the British decided to call them, are also found here. We have learned people in politics as also the illiterate people (angutha chhaap) who learned to sign only after assuming the office on being elected. People are interested in knowing the assets of politicians. This point is covered by using the asset declaration given by the politicians at the time of the election.

Book Synopsis Dynamics of the Institution of Governor in India by : Dr. Mohan Singh Saggu
Download or read book Dynamics of the Institution of Governor in India written by Dr. Mohan Singh Saggu and published by K.K. Publications. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamics of the Institution of Governor in India The Constitution of India is based on the principle of federalism with a strong bias towards strong Center. The roots of the office of Governor in the Indian polity could be traced to the erstwhile British colonial rule which was created to administer the affairs of east India Company. Right from the Regulating Act of 1773 to the Indian Independence Act, 1947 the position and role of the Governor had been defined by the Acts enacted by the British Parliament from time to time. With the end of British rule in India and with the adoption of the new Constitution of India, the position of the office of the Governor has altogether changed. The Governor plays a dual role under the In.' Constitution. He acts as the constitutional head o the State and also serves as an agent of the Centr Government. The Constitution imposes a duty upon the Governor to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and the law of the country and he is also responsible for the well-being of the people of the State. For this purpose, the Constitution also confers on the Governor some discretionary powers which make him powerful. The institution of the Governor had been misused to a great extent particularly after 1967. I some states coalition governments were formed; defections became the rule of the day; constitutional instability prevailed all over and under these situations, the Governors behaved in different styles in different situations or differently in the same situation. They did not follow uniform practices in discharging their duties. The institution of Governor suddenly she' into both importance and controversy. There is no doubt that the Governors are not fe tered by any rule in the exercise of their discretion excepting the well-established principles which guide and regulate the exercise of his discretionary powers. Many times the Governor's discretion had actually been turned into central manipulation and often the allegation had been leveled that the office of the Gov error had been remote-controlled by the Centre to promote partisan interest at the state level. The institution had been misused to dislodging and embarrassing the opposition-ruled State governments. I the present work analysis has been made regarding the factors responsible for the development of such m important position that has been envisaged by the constitutional provisions and what has emerged practice.
Book Synopsis Matters of Discretion by : I.K. Gujral
Download or read book Matters of Discretion written by I.K. Gujral and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first-ever autobiography written by an Indian prime minister. Only once in a lifetime comes a book that simply must be read! An absorbing, authentic and definitive account, by a former prime minister, of crucial events that had a significant impact on the nation’s destiny after independence. I K Gujral has penned his life story in a forthright and candid manner. He entered the political fray as a freedom fighter in the British era, and after the tumultuous events that rocked the Indian subcontinent in the wake of the partition in August 1947, crossed over from Pakistan to India, where he had to begin life from scratch. Despite facing tremendous odds, on the basis of his perseverance, resilience and never-say-die attitude, Gujral’s achievements allowed him to witness and shape India’s contemporary history. Gujral joined Congress Party and was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1964. He was the Information and Broadcasting Minister when emergency was imposed, which entailed arbitrary press censorship. Since he refused to bow down to the de facto powers, he was unceremoniously replaced and later sent by Indira Gandhi as India’s ambassador to the USSR, a post he handled with commendable tact and finesse. After his stint in Moscow, he returned to India and re-entered the ‘political whirlpool’ by joining the Janata Dal. He became minister for external affairs under V P Singh (1989) and Deve Gowda (1996). Gujral reached the pinnacle of his career when he became the prime minister on 1997. During his priministership, despite the exigencies and pressures of running a coalition government, he endeavoured to achieve progress in many spheres. The Gujral Doctrine (a set of five principles to guide the conduct of foreign relations with India’s immediate neighbours) was widely acclaimed in both India and the West. This volume, a valuable addition to the literature on contemporary history, provides a deep insight into the political scene as it unfolded after independence and delineates the roles played by a wide spectrum of politicians, bureaucrats, and many others.
Book Synopsis Democracy, Politics & Governance by : A. Surya Prakash
Download or read book Democracy, Politics & Governance written by A. Surya Prakash and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of articles published by the author over a period of time. Much of his writing reflects the social, political and economic issues that have emerged over the years and impacted India’s politics and governance. Given his special interest in the working of the constitution, and the march of democracy since independence, the book contains chapters which specifically deal with constitutional issues, the working of parliament, the system of justice, the executive and the media. The author feels that negating the facts of history has been a major pastime of the Nehruvian and Marxist schools and that the distortions introduced by these schools need to be challenged and corrected in the current phase of national politics. This is reflected in his articles which deal with the running secular versus pseudo-secular debate as also the political battles being fought on what is ‘national’ and what is ‘anti-national’. In any case, whatever the issue and however intense the debate, he is firmly of the view that it must all happen within the parameters of the constitution.
