Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chicago Medical Journal and Examiner, Vol. 42: January to July, 1881 A large part of the diseases coming under the care of the physician, are caused by errors in diet, drinks, clothing, ventila tion and other matters included under the term hygiene; and no one can attain the highest degree of success as a practitioner, who does not fully appreciate the importance of careful attention to the hygienic influences affecting his patients. The object of such attention is two-fold: namely, to remove or correct such erroneous habits and conditions as may be still acting as causes; and the substitution of such as will positively aid in the restoration of the patient. A comfortable tempera ture a sufficient supply of fresh, pure air cleanliness; a care ful adaptation of the quantity and quality of food and drink to the capacity of the digestive organs to receive and assimilate it; and a quiet, cheerful. Hopeful mental influence, are hygienic conditions of universal applicability in the management of the sick. I by no means approve of the modern doctrines of empeo tancy, which assumes that diseases must run their natural course, and that art can do little more than properly regulate the hygienic conditions of the patient, and leave the rest to that intangible something called nature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chicago Medical Examiner, 1866, Vol. 7: A Monthly Journal, Devoted to the Educational, Scientific and Practical Interests of the Medical Profession There are three varieties of this class of advertisements, two of which are found in the columns of newspapers, and the other, in the form of handbills and pamphlets, is pasted along the streets, thrown into public conveyances, and left upon the doorsteps of private dwellings. They all possess, in a greater or less degree, three qualities, namely, false pretensions, obscen ity, and either direct or indirect encouragement to vice and crime. The false pretensions consist in, first, the most abominable lying in regard to the previous education, experience, and cm cial positions of the pretended doctors, for curing private dis eases; and, econd, the positive and unqualified promise to cure permanently and Speedily, all the chronic and private diseases of the two sexes. Whoever opens a newspaper, and glances at these advertisements, and then remembers that not. One of these advertising pretenders has any actual medical education, or has ever studied medicine proper in their lives, and that they are not recognized as belonging to the medical profession by any respectable physician in the country, will have some idea of their impudently fraudulent character. And yet who can estimate the number of victims, of both sexes, who are annually caught, and their pockets emptied by these very pretensions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chicago Medical Journal, 1873, Vol. 30: A Monthly Record of Medicine, Surgery and Collateral Sciences This, presents a striking illustration of the conversion of force, and of the truth of the proposition that force is never lost, only converted. Among the reflex effects of neuralgias are various affections of the skin and its appendages, developed in the manner just de scribed. Erysipelas is occasionally observed; changes in the color of the hair are frequent. It is rare to find a neuralgic sub ject whose hair has not become more or less gray, in the vicinity of the affected nerves. These decolorizing changes are some times produced with great rapidity, it being sometimes quite possible to observe a marked increase in the grayness of the hair after a severe attack of neuralgia; It is asserted by some authors, that these changes are sometimes temporary, that the color will return to the bleached hair, upon the cessation of the pain, to be again discharged upon its recurrence. I have not observed this personally, but it is quite plausible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
