Book excerpt: It’s Carnival week in Cherringham, but while most of the locals are looking forward to the regatta, the parade and the fireworks, Jack and Sarah are more interested in the mysterious body that’s been uncovered at the archaeological dig just outside the village ... No Roman soldier - but a young man, no ID. Definitely the victim of a cold blooded murder ... from just a few decades ago. It’s a baffling cold case - but one that soon heats up when a member of the carnival committee suddenly goes missing. Jack and Sarah investigate - and quickly come up against a wall of silence. Are the two cases connected? What dark secret from Cherringham’s past is being kept hidden? As the Carnival rolls to its spectacular finale, Jack and Sarah race against time to stop the murderer before they kill again ... Just back from an extended stay in London, Agatha Raisin finds herself greeted by torrential rains and an old, familiar feeling of boredom. When her handsome new neighbor, Paul Chatterton, shows up on her doorstep, she tries her best to ignore his obvious charms, but his sparkling black eyes and the promise of adventure soon lure her into another investigation. Paul has heard rumors about Agatha's reputation as the Cotswold village sleuth and wastes no time offering their services to the crotchety owner of a haunted house. Whispers, footsteps, and a cold white mist are plaguing Mrs. Witherspoon, but the police have failed to come up with any leads, supernatural or otherwise. The neighbors think it's all a desperate ploy for attention, but Paul and Agatha are sure something more devious is going on. Someone's playing tricks on Mrs. Witherspoon, and when she turns up dead under suspicious circumstances, Agatha finds herself caught up in another baffling murder mystery.

Book excerpt: Amid the aroma of the sea and the Galician pines, a young saxophonist is found dead in his swanky flat overlooking the beach. The murder seems to have taken place after a sexual encounter with a lover: there are two glasses filled with gin in the living room, and the dead man, Luis Reigosa, is tied by the wrists to the headboard of the bed. But the way he was killed makes it impossible to obtain any more clues about his activities that night: his stomach, groin and thighs are horribly burned, and his genitals look hideously like a toasted cashew. The unusually cold-blooded and cruel murder is assigned to Leo Caldas, a disheartened police inspector still searching for his place in the world. The case unfolds between inviting nights at the jazz clubs and the tense, affected atmosphere of affluent Vigo.

Book excerpt: How dangerous can breaking your promise be? London, June, 1953. It's Coronation Day and among the crowd gathered at Westminster Abbey Nancy Nicholson meets the man of her dreams, someone she can truly love - or so she believes. After years of loneliness, romance has finally arrived. But there's mystery surrounding Philip March and it's not long before the questions begin. Why is Nancy never invited to his apartment? Why does she never meet his friends? How has he managed to beguile her parents? And does he truly care for Nancy, or is his love no more than a means to control? Amid growing doubts, Nancy walks away - and her life becomes a nightmare of suspense. Stalked day and night, nowhere is safe. Fear looms at her from every corner. Terror follows her home. There is no-one she can trust. No-one to help. How dangerous can breaking your promise be? Nancy is about to find out. See what reviewers have to say about the prequel to this bestselling mystery suspense series: The story is a roller-coaster of a read, with plenty of tension and suspense. Merryn's characters are real and she always sets the scene beautifully: in this case Britain in the early 1950s. The social constraints of the 1950s are keenly observed and add much to this well-written story. As Philip's menacing behaviour worsens, you hope Nancy will find the strength to face up to the reality of her situation. But in doing so, is she leaping from one disastrous situation into another? A superb prequel to Venetian Vendetta. Amazon categories: Mystery, thriller and suspense Women's fiction Women sleuths International mystery and crime Detective Crime
