Book excerpt: Amid the aroma of the sea and the Galician pines, a young saxophonist is found dead in his swanky flat overlooking the beach. The murder seems to have taken place after a sexual encounter with a lover: there are two glasses filled with gin in the living room, and the dead man, Luis Reigosa, is tied by the wrists to the headboard of the bed. But the way he was killed makes it impossible to obtain any more clues about his activities that night: his stomach, groin and thighs are horribly burned, and his genitals look hideously like a toasted cashew. The unusually cold-blooded and cruel murder is assigned to Leo Caldas, a disheartened police inspector still searching for his place in the world. The case unfolds between inviting nights at the jazz clubs and the tense, affected atmosphere of affluent Vigo.

Book excerpt: "Blue Eyes" is a breathtaking saga, interwoven with rich original mythology, tribal beliefs, a fantasy race of plant-based creatures, unimaginable animals, and a tapestry of supporting stories and themes. This fantastical story makes readers consider love versus honor, power versus right, and two lovers determined to believe that, in the end, love cannot be denied. This novel may appeal to readers who can't get enough of beautiful world-building and magical elements. Forbidden love can be dangerous enough--let alone when one lover is accused of being a demon. In this high fantasy story, Yawta, the daughter of a village leader, wishes to escape her village to be free to live openly with her lover Bamru. Unfortunately, as a female, she has no rights, and Bamru is believed to be a demon because of the color of his eyes. To complicate Yawta's escape plans, Bamru is torn between his love for Yawta and his loyalty to her father, the tribal leader--even as his life is constantly threatened due to his mysterious, secret origins. This two-part story reaches a climax when Yawta's death transports her to a new death-world, and Bamru enters that dangerous death-world to find her.

Book excerpt: Award-winning author Kaki Warner gives fans a reason to celebrate with the first in a brand-new Western trilogy set in Heartbreak, Colorado, starring an advance man for the railroad—and the woman whose trust (and heart) he longs to win. For fans of Linda Lael Miller and Jodi Thomas... Hoping to escape his past, Ethan Hardesty left a career as an architect and went to work for the railroad. Only two things impede his desire to transform Heartbreak Creek into a thriving town once again—a vandal bent on stopping the railroad, and the beautiful but hardheaded woman who won’t sign over the final right-of-way through the canyon. Audra Pearsall has good reason for not allowing a train to pass within yards of her home, no matter how persuasive the handsome Mr. Hardesty can be. But when vandalism escalates to murder and fear stalks the canyon, Audra doesn’t know who to turn to—until the man she thought was her friend proves to be an enemy, and the man she wouldn’t allow herself to trust becomes her reluctant hero…

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When five-year-old Louis encounters a ghost in the attic of their new home, KC-his mom, whose ancestors include a collection of ill-famed Salem witches-seeks professional guidance to explain her boy's strange narratives. With the help of the metaphysical whirlwind and brilliant young beauty named Oona Neeci-a powerful witch and medium-KC and her doubting husband manage to engage the ghost, a nineteenth century ancestor named Anton Dietrich, locked now in the earthly purgatory of the roof garret where he once convalesced. As Anton, affectionately known as Opa, reveals his story, thick with tragedy and treachery from the time of the Civil War, his needs become clear to his spellbound descendants. However, following a sometimes frenetic plan to free Anton's soul-one that takes the family to Washington D.C., Boston, and New York-the tale does not end with Opa's release. As the past and present mingle with what exists beyond our realm, KC's world shifts again, for those who sought to help Anton suddenly find themselves dependent upon him for their own redemption. Far more than just another ghost story, Louis and the Ghost is a character-driven family saga that blends humor and sadness, romantic erotica, and moments of raw suspense. It's a masterful mix of supernatural happenings steeped in historical fact-a book that will keep you riveted from first page to last.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nebraska odonate list has 109 species in two suborders, damselflies (Zygoptera) with 47 species and dragonflies (Anisoptera) with 62 species. Nebraska had been very poorly surveyed prior to 2005 and 63 counties had fewer than 10 records. By 2017 the number of county records had nearly quadrupled, to over 3000 records, the average county total had increased from 9 to 33 and all counties had at least 21 records. An effort was made to collect data more or less uniformly from all 93 Nebraska counties. The areas with intense corn and soybean farming, eastern and southcentral areas, are low in diversity (21-30 species per county), the southeast and western half of the state are higher (31-40 species) and the northwestern and northern Sandhill counties are the richest with more than 50 species per county. The present state list of 109 species represents 12 additions since 1998. Eleven additional species have been reported from the state, but are considered invalid or have been re-identified. This paper presents a short history of odonate study in Nebraska and an analysis of the data for the 109 species recorded in Nebraska to date. Distribution maps by county are included for each identified
