The smaller text-books which deal with Systematic Chemistry usually treat theoretical matters so lightly that the student seldom obtains any satisfactory grasp of these during the earlier portion of his studies; while in the larger treatises the same subjects not infrequently receive similar scant attention, because the student is supposed to have been introduced to them already. For example, beginners are seldom made to understand the full significance of chemical formulæ, although they are usually taught to use them at a very early stage in their studies. These chemical formulæ are the outcome and embodiment of many facts and theories, and their logical introduction into a course of chemistry can only take place at a comparatively late period. Their convenience, however, is felt to be so great, that the student is usually brought face to face with them prematurely, at a time when he can neither understand their origin nor appreciate their import; and later, when he begins his more advanced studies, he is often assumed to be quite conversant with them. An examination of the progress of chemistry at different times, in the light of the knowledge we have to-day, seems to me to show that the main purpose of the science has always been the same. Chemistry has concerned itself in the past, as it concerns itself now, with the changes of material things; and, although the aspects of this study have been as varied as those of the transmutations of matter wherewith it deals, the essential object of the study, at all times, may be expressed in the language of to-day as being to describe, to set in due order, and to connect the changes of composition and the changes of properties which occur simultaneously in systems of homogeneous substances, and the conditions under which these changes proceed. The history of the advances which have been made towards attaining this object is the history of the principles of chemistry. The actions of our surroundings on our senses are spoken of as the properties of substances. If all the properties, except, it may be, the masses of any portions of a substance obtained by sifting or sorting that substance are the same. A period of six weeks immediately following the first four months' instruction in General Chemistry is devoted to work of this nature. General principles and theoretical topics arc discussed with the utmost simplicity, and in particular view of their continued application. During this time recitations and laboratory exercises arc adjusted to the particular task of explaining and emphasizing the lecture subjects. It is not the intention to segregate and summarily dispose of much important material by untimely or unduly restricted discussion under the above heading. The purpose is rather to offer very early presentation of leading principles which arc of material assistance in teaching the beginner to properly explain and correlate his experimental results. Such preliminary preparation permits very open class room discussion of the specific chemical phenomena, which are gradually developed in the laboratory. Every opportunity for illustrating and applying these principles is improved as the actual chemical experience of the student increases. The advisability of using the Electrolytic Dissociation Theory and the Mass Action Law in first year work is no longer questioned by most teachers. It is rather a question of when and how these subjects should be introduced. As soon as the student has acquired practical familiarity with the molecular and atomic theory and is able to fully comprehend a few of the more general types of chemical change, no particular difficulty will be met in studying the characteristic behavior of electrolytes in aqueous solution, or the effect of enforced concentration changes (formation of gaseous or insoluble products) on the course of a reaction. The different topics are dealt with as Opportunity offers, but the treatment of any particular subject is postponed till facts illustrating it have been mentioned. The subject in question is then considered as fully as space permits - a mode of procedure which appears preferable to dealing with it in a fragmentary manner in different parts of the book. The latter method may usefully be employed for lectures, but the former method greatly increases the value of the book for purposes of reference and revision. As regards the order, I have also been guided to some extent by the historical development of the science. Subject to the above considerations, the more important branches of chemical theory, including the Principles of Chemical Equilibrium, the determination of Molecular Weights in Solu tion, Electrolysis and Electrolytic Dissociation, are introduced at a fairly early stage of the work, and their applications are repeatedly illustrated in the latter part of the book. The Periodic System is described after the non-metals, and serves as the basis for the discussion of the metals and their com pounds. One of the main tasks of a teacher is so to familiarize the student with a general principle that he learns to apply it with confidence. The mere statement of a principle, in the expectation that the student will straightway apply it in his later work, is useless. It will be found that the subjects usually included in an Elementary Course, such as Stage I. Of the Board of Education, are all dealt with in the early part of the book, and the more advanced work in the later chapters. Further division of the subject into stages leads inevitably to the result that information regarding any important element has to be sought for in different parts of the book, thus rendering it much less useful for purposes of reference and revision.
