Book Synopsis Sediments and Water Interactions by : Peter G. Sly
Download or read book Sediments and Water Interactions written by Peter G. Sly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first symposium on sediment/freshwater interactions was held in Amsterdam, in 1976, and the second was held at Kingston, Ontario, Canada, in 1981. The third symposium was held at the University of Geneva, in 1984, and also included a num ber of contributions dealing with sediment/saltwater interactions. It is expected that future symposia of this series will retain this approach, and that the revised sympo sium title will remain the same for later proceedings of these meetings. Because of the large number of submissions in 1984, many were given as poster presentations. Extended abstracts of all contributions to the Geneva symposium appear in Interactions Between Sediments and Ubter (C. E. P. Consultants Ltd. , 26 Albany St. , Edinburgh, EHI 3QH, U. K. , 1984). Full-length papers appear only in the proceedings. The format of the third symposium was similar to its predecessors. The location provided a particularly good opportunity for attendance by European scientists, who represented about 81% of the participants. About 16% came from North America and 3% were from Southeast Asia and Australia. It is unfortunate that there were no contributors from either Africa or South America, or other parts of Asia. In all, 16 countries were represented at this symposium. In a continuing attempt to provide equal opportunities for attendance by scientists from other parts of the world, it is planned to hold the next symposium in Australia in 1987. Further information about the symposia series can be obtained from Dr. E. D.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Techniques for Aquatic Sediments Sampling by : Alena Mudroch
Download or read book Handbook of Techniques for Aquatic Sediments Sampling written by Alena Mudroch and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-08-10 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This up-to-date revision of a bestseller sets the standard for planning and implementing cost-effective sediment sampling programs. Handbook of Techniques for Aquatic Sediments Sampling, Second Edition is the only comprehensive text on procedures for sampling bottom sediments, suspended sediments, and sediment pore water. Practical guidance is also provided for sample handling and preservation to ensure accurate physicochemical analysis. No other reference source provides more tools for obtaining representative samples for evaluating potential contaminant effects on aquatic environments.

This book was released on 2017-01-17 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A substantial increase in the number of studies using the optical properties (absorbance and fluorescence) of dissolved organic matter (DOM) as a proxy for its chemical properties in estuaries and the coastal and open ocean has occurred during the last decade. We are making progress on finding the actual chemical compounds or phenomena responsible for DOM’s optical properties. Ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry, in particular, has made important progress in making the key connections between optics and chemistry. But serious questions remain and the last major special issue on DOM optics and chemistry occurred nearly 10 years ago. Controversies remain from the non-specific optical properties of DOM that are not linked to discrete sources, and sometimes provide conflicting information. The use of optics, which is relatively easier to employ in synoptic and high resolution sampling to determine chemistry, is a critical connection to make and can lead to major advances in our understanding of organic matter cycling in all aquatic ecosystems. The contentions and controversies raised by our poor understanding of the linkages between optics and chemistry of DOM are bottlenecks that need to be addressed and overcome.

Download or read book Early Diagenesis and Chemical Mass Transfer in Lake Erie Sediments written by Gerald Matisoff and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vertical profiles of pore water and sediment solids chemistry were obtained from two sites in Lake Erie. Samples were collected using both gravity coring and pore water ""peeper" techniques. In general, concentrations of nutrients and toxic metals in sediment solids decreased with increasing depth. Comparison of pore water "peeper" data to gravity core data showed that "peeper" data provides higher resolution near the sediment-water interface. The thermodynamic tendency of metal phosphate and carbonate mineral phases to precipitate in Lake Erie sediments has been calculated by means of an ion-pair model of the interstitial water chemistry. The calculations suggest that detrital calcite, argonite, and dolomite should be dissolving in the sediments, but that iron and manganese carbonates should be precipitating. Regenerated phosphate should be reacting with calcium, iron, manganese, and lead to form authigenic mineral phases. Whitlockite (Ca3(PO4)2) and not hydroxylapatite (Ca5(PO4)3OH) is the predicted mieral phase controlling phosphate solubility. Rates of anaerobic decomposition of Lake Erie sediments from one locality were determined for seven depth intervals at three temperatures. Concentration increases of bicarbonate, phosphate, ammonium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and maganese in pore water withinin any given depth interval followed zeroth order kinetics and exhibited Arrhenius temperature dependency. The observed release rates decrease exponentially with the depth in the sediment due to a corresponding decrease in the amount of oxidizable organic matter and acid hydrolyzable mineral phases.
