Book excerpt: Crystallography may be described as the science of the structure of materi als, using this word in its widest sense, and its ramifications are apparent over a broad front of current scientific endeavor. It is not surprising, therefore, to find that most universities offer some aspects of crystallography in their undergraduate courses in the physical sciences. It is the principal aim of this book to present an introduction to structure determination by X-ray crystal lography that is appropriate mainly to both final-year undergraduate studies in crystallography, chemistry, and chemical physics, and introductory post graduate work in this area of crystallography. We believe that the book will be of interest in other disciplines, such as physics, metallurgy, biochemistry, and geology, where crystallography has an important part to play. In the space of one book, it is not possible either to cover all aspects of crystallography or to treat all the subject matter completely rigorously. In particular, certain mathematical results are assumed in order that their applications may be discussed. At the end of each chapter, a short bibliog raphy is given, which may be used to extend the scope of the treatment given here. In addition, reference is made in the text to specific sources of information. We have chosen not to discuss experimental methods extensively, as we consider that this aspect of crystallography is best learned through practical experience, but an attempt has been made to simulate the interpretive side of experimental crystallography in both examples and exercises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes available, for interested scientists to procure, absorb, and evaluate, the vast body of information on the research and results of the work on the chemistry of penicillin done in England and the United States during the war. The National Academy of Sciences arranged for the preparation of this summary, Dr. H. T. Clarke and Dr. J. R. Johnson representing the United States on the editorial board, and Sir Robert Robinson representing Britain. The body of the work was prepared by more than 60 outstanding biochemists and biophysicists, who describe the phases of research to which they contributed the most. The work of 23 academic, medical, industrial, and government laboratories is reported. Originally published in 1949. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1848, authored by J.D. Dana, the Manual of Mineral Science now enters its 23rd edition. This new edition continues in the footsteps or its predecessors as the standard textbook in Mineralogy/Mineral Science/Earth Materials/Rocks and Minerals courses. This new edition contains 22 chapters, instead of 14 as in the prior edition. This is the result of having packaged coherent subject matter into smaller, more easily accessible units. Each chapter has a new and expanded introductory statement, which gives the user a quick overview of what is to come. Just before these introductions, each chapter features a new illustration that highlights some aspect of the subject in that particular chapter. All such changes make the text more readable, user-friendly and searchable. Many of the first 14 chapters are reasonably independent of each other, allowing for great flexibility in an instructor's preferred subject sequence. The majority of illustrations in this edition were re-rendered and/or redesigned and many new photographs, mainly of mineral specimens, were added. NEW Thoroughly Revised Lab Manual ISBN13: 978-0-471-77277-4 Also published by John Wiley & Sons, the thoroughly updated Laboratory Manual: Minerals and Rocks: Exercises in Crystal and Mineral Chemistry, Crystallography, X-ray Powder Diffraction, Mineral and Rock Identification, and Ore Mineralogy, 3e, is for use in the mineralogy laboratory and covers the subject matter in the same sequence as the Manual of Mineral Science, 23e.

Book excerpt: Interstitial Alloys covers the significant progress in the development and understanding of the principles and applications of interstitial alloys. Interstitial alloy refers to the existence of a pure metal lattice, which the metal-metal atom bond remains the dominant one, and the non-metal atoms are sufficiently small to be accommodated within the metal lattice without, or with only a limited degree of, distortion from metal-type symmetry. This book contains 10 chapters and begins with a brief introduction to the basic principles of interstitial alloys. The next two chapters describe the physical properties of these alloys, along with their behavior in solid solutions. The remaining chapters deal with a specific interstitial alloy, its structure, physico-chemical properties, preparation, and application. This work specifically considers carbide, nitride, boride, silicide, oxide, hydride, and mixed interstitial alloys. This book will be of value to chemists and physicists.

This volume contains 15 chapters, and begins with an overview of the historical development of the structural aspects of carbon compounds. This topic is followed by discussions on the classification, nomenclature, analysis, physical properties, crystallographic studies, stereochemistry, and reaction mechanisms of hydrocarbons and their derivatives. Other chapters describe the reactions of free radicals, homolytic oxidation mechanisms, and wave mechanics of hydrocarbons. The concluding chapters are devoted to nomenclature, preparation, and methods of analysis of aliphatic compounds. Organic chemists and researchers will find this book invaluable.
