Book excerpt: With the increase of population worldwide, sewage sludge disposal has become a real challenge. Many solutions have been proposed, among them the use as agriculture amendment. Besides being economically cost-effective, the benefits of land application as organic fertilizer reside on its high content in organic matter, organic nitrogen and phosphorus plus the enhancement of soil quality and thus crop productivity. However, there haven't been any systematic study on the effects of sewage sludge application as agricultural amendment on soil and crops. Accordingly, the current study has been designated to test the prospect of sewage sludge application to agricultural soils without threating human and environment health. Field trials were conducted during the wheat-growing seasons in February and June from the year 2018 in IAAT - Bekaa valley - Lebanon. Physico-chemical and microbiological analysis were performed on sewage sludge to be applied, on soil pre and post harvest of wheat. Afterward, physicochemical analyses were done on planted wheat species. After physicochemical analysis of the sewage sludge, it was demonstrated that the studied sludge is classified class A (as per the Lebanese guidelines for sludge reuse in agriculture), is slightly acid, has high content of minerals and organic matter and the levels of heavy metals are within the admissible limits. Microbiological analysis validated its proper use as agricultural amendment due to its exemption from E. coli, salmonella, helminth eggs and staphylococcus aureus. Pre cultivation soil and post harvested soil were also analyzed. Pre-cultivation soil had enough content of phosphorus and potassium with deficiencies in some micronutrients. Analyzed heavy metals were below the maximum admissible limits (Lebanese guidelines for sludge reuse in agriculture). Microbiology of the pre cultivation soil showed an exclusion of hostile species. After harvesting the wheat species, studies on soils and wheat crops were performed: physicochemical properties of soil enhanced with the increase in organic matter concentration and nutrients, in addition to the improvement of water holding capacity, soil porosity and its structure...Nonetheless, most of the concentrations of analyzed micronutrients and metals increased in the with increasing the sewage sludge rate, but, all tested elements were below or within the allowable limits for agricultural soils. As for the harvested wheat crops, the essential macronutrients nitrogen and phosphorus have increased after sewage sludge amendments, and, fortunately heavy metals contents hadn't expanded to reach the threshold for their presence in cereals. Concerning the crop quality, an upsurge in fiber and protein content was recorded which indicated that application of sewage sludge as soil amendments is a worthy practice for circulating nutrients to food chains via crops. The recycling of sewage sludge, referred as applying organic matter, primarily containing nitrogen and phosphorus, back into the natural cycle forms in cropping systems is considered a new eco-friendly approach for their disposal. However, more research must be conducted in order to elaborate regulations for sewage sludge land application for the simple reason to minimize potential risks of heavy metals and microbiological contaminations, especially long-term impacts.

These effects are probably due mainly to the nitrogen and phosphorus content of sewage sludges. But, as sludges are more organic than mineral, we can expect an effect of the organic matter added to the soil on soil fertility. Certainly, in the future, landspreading of sludges will be regulated, taking into account pollution hazards for waters (excess of nitrogen and phosphorus supply compared to plant needs and soil storage capacities) and for soils (excess of heavy metals supply and build up in soils). There will be regulations fixing what low level of sludges may be spread each year, decreasing their comparative value with respect to mineral fertilizers. In this eventuality, the organic value of sludges will take on a greater importance and several questions arise : - what is the lowest amount of sludge to be spread to have an immediate effect on soil physical properties? - are sludges effective on soil physical properties when spreading repeated low amounts? On the other hand, organic matter and soil biology are closely linked and there are few data on the possible effects - beneficial or detrimenta- on soil organisms.
