Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anglo-Zulu war of 1879 was perhaps subjected to much controversy as a result of the epic Zulu victory at the battle of Isandlwana. Lord Chelmsford, the General Officer commanding the invasion force during the war, sustained severe criticism from both journalists and parliament following his actions and conduct at Isandlwana. In 1939 and on the sixtieth anniversary of the battle, Major, the Hon Gerald French, wrote a controversial but riveting book titled'Lord Chelmsford and the Zulu War,' is based on defending both Lord Chelmsford's actions and reputation. The foreword to the book was written by General Sir Bindon Blood who served under Chelmsford in India and a devoted admirer.French however, had fallen into the error of selective inaccurate source material and false reports that were, at the time, specifically designed to shield Lord Chelmsford from the Isandlwana debacle and conveniently lay such blame on the shoulders of Colonel Anthony Durnford, Royal Engineers, who was present at Isandlwana. For example, in looking for such evidence, French deliberately altered a map that showed the true disposition of the imperial defence line at the battle in order for readers to reach the conclusion that the primary course of the defeat was the retreat of the Natal Native Contingent , that opened a gap in the defence , thus allowing an unopposed Zulu advance. The book is nevertheless a comprehensive and detailed coverage of the Anglo Zulu war from the initial invasion to the final battle of Ulundi some months later, and has been used extensively as bibliography by authors when addressing the subject of the Anglo-Zulu war. This book is highly recommended for those with a historical interest of the events of 1879 and the demise of the Zulu nation.

Over the years the town has seen Roman occupation, the execution of the ringleaders of the peasant's revolt and the Essex witch trials. Much of the more sinister history of England took place in Chelmsford, and it would seem that many of the participants —and victims — of these events still haunt the town today. Join author, broadcaster and paranormal investigator Jason Day as he introduces you to the ghost of an angry nun, a phantom theatre guide and a spectral cyclist. Encounter the 'Box Monster', the spirits of those women falsely accused of witchcraft and the mysterious vanishing cloaked figure that dons a top hat...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost 400 men from the Chelmsford were lost in the Great War. This book explores how the experience of war impacted on the Town, from the initial enthusiasm for sorting out the German Kaiser in time for Christmas 1914, to the gradual realization of the enormity of human sacrifice the families of Chelmsford were committed to as the war stretched out over the next four years. A record of the growing disillusion of the people, their tragedies and hardships and a determination to see it through. ??The Great War affected everyone. At home there were wounded soldiers in military hospitals, refugees from Belgium and later on German prisoners of war. There were food and fuel shortages and disruption to schooling. The role of women changed dramatically and they undertook a variety of work undreamed of in peacetime. Meanwhile, men serving in the armed forces were scattered far and wide. Extracts from contemporary letters reveal their heroism and give insights into what it was like under battle conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth history of the fight for women’s rights over a century in one English city. Struggle and Suffrage in Chelmsford is a comprehensive account of what life was like for women in Chelmsford, England from 1850-1950. It takes the reader on an in-depth and interesting journey, starting from when a woman, as far as both the law of the land and certain elements of society had decided, was worthless with little or no rights. With the birth of women’s suffrage movements gaining recognition on a national level during the latter years of the nineteenth century, the book looks at how this affected the lives of women throughout Chelmsford. The story continues in to the twentieth century and the years of the years of the First World War, which was without question a major turning point in women’s suffrage. The book explores what women achieved throughout the war, in the jobs they undertook and the voluntary work they carried out. It was a time that provided women with freedom and power the likes of which they’d never known before. Attitudes towards divorce and how they changed over time are also discussed—from being a religious stigma around the time of the First World War, to being a life choice in the much more promiscuous times of the Second World War, by which time latex male contraceptives had been available for about twenty years. An informative and fascinating read, Struggle and Suffrage in Chelmsford provides a compelling and moving account of the lives of the town’s women throughout this turbulent era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Massachusetts town of Chelmsford, chartered in 1655, consisted of five villages. In the 1820s, industries related to the production of cast iron, textiles, and textile mill machinery made their first appearance in the North village along Stony Brook. Its social and economic life became aligned with the new industrial city of Lowell, and there had even been talk of secession from the Centre village in the mid-1800s. A golden age of industrial expansion and production occurred from 1875 to 1910. Industry in the West village consisted of blade and textile manufacturing in two locations, also tied to water power on Stony Brook, but this community was aligned socially and economically with nearby Nabnasset village in Westford. Discover the golden age of the North and West villages in photographs and learn about the people who made it happen.

Named for Chelmsford in Essex, England, it received its charter in May 1655. Until railroads and streetcars arrived in the late 1800s, South Chelmsford, East Chelmsford, and Chelmsford Center were primarily agricultural with the support of blacksmiths, carpenters, general storekeepers, millers, sawmill operators, and wheelwrights. These vintage photographs transport readers back in time to stroll Central Square, to discover a millpond that no longer exists, and to see the evolution of Center Common. Discover which farm was later subdivided into a familiar neighborhood, find out where the lumber came from, view homes the way they looked more than 100 years ago, and learn about Chelmsford's past residents and their places of worship.
