Book excerpt: The once-expansive Chatham Township was reduced to only a fraction of its size after Florham Park, Chatham Borough, and Madison Borough split from the township between 1889 and 1899. Its present, smaller size, however, does not reflect its vast history. Few municipalities possess such dramatic events, colorful figures, or community spirit. For instance, when the Newark Evening News reported that the powerful Port of New York Authority would take over 10,000 acres of the Great Swamp and spend $220 million to create an international jetport, people of the township and outraged citizens in a wide area surrounding the Great Swamp began to fight back. Although the Port Authority promised jobs, prosperity, and progress, their efforts were in vain. Instead of a jetport, the land now consists of 7,500 protected acres, one of the largest National Wildlife Refuges ever created so close to an urban center. Stories like this from the twentieth century are quite large in scope. Stories of prosperous farms, huge rose-growing greenhouses, and times enjoyed in simple, bucolic settings make up the township's history in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Chatham Township is an embodiment of these historical stories and images. There was a time when the marshes of the Great Swamp were hunting grounds for huckleberries, when a Noe family horse pulled milk carts through the streets, and even, it was whispered, when the massive, three-story, Greek Revival Boisaubin mansion was used as a stop along the Underground Railroad. One of the most notable stories is of a lady known as Madame Bey, who opened a camp for prizefighters, making Chatham Township a sports page dateline known throughout the country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the twentieth century, Chatham already had a long New England history and was just emerging as a major coastal resort. During the next 40 years, modern tourism developed, mixing historic buildings and coastal traditions with new features catering to off-Cape visitors. Postcards captured the scenic and cultural beauty of Chatham and documented the tranquil images of the seaside setting. This informative book, filled with local anecdotes and familiar scenes throughout town, covers the period from 1905 to 1940 with nearly two hundred images of the changing Chatham landscape. These pages are filled with details of the people and places that have affected the modern setting of this Cape Cod resort. Most of the scenes are highly recognizable to visitors and give context to our daily lives, enriching our sense of who we are and how we fit into strong local traditions

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A trio of historic neighborhoods in Savannah, Georgia rank among the most picturesque in the United States. Ardsley Park, Chatham Crescent, and Ardmore are well known for their unique layouts and varied architectural styles, as well as lush shrubbery and the moss-draped oaks that have become a trademark of Savannah's charm. The development of Ardsley Park and Chatham Crescent began around 1910 as the advent of the automobile allowed more Savannahians to move to the "suburbs." Neighboring Ardmore, to the south of Ardsley Park and Chatham Crescent, came later, during the 1920s. The entire area was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. For decades the neighborhoods have been home to some of Savannah's most prominent families. Former residents include media mogul Ted Turner and the University of Georgia bulldog mascot owned by Frank W. "Sonny" Seiler. Within these pages are photographs from private collections never before made available to the public-images of Savannahians at work and at play. Captivating scenes of days long ago reveal the history of a much-beloved community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the religious history of Siler City, North Carolina, Chad E. Seales argues that southern whites cultivated their own regional brand of American secularism and employed it, alongside public religious performances, to claim and regulate public spaces. Over the course of the twentieth century, they wielded secularism to segregate racialized bodies, to challenge local changes resulting from civil rights legislation, and to respond to the arrival of Latino migrants. Combining ethnographic and archival sources, Seales studies the themes of industrialization, nationalism, civility, privatization, and migration through the local history of Siler City; its neighborhood patterns, Fourth of July parades, Confederate soldiers, minstrel shows, mock weddings, banking practices, police shootings, Good Friday processions, public protests, and downtown mural displays. Offering a spatial approach to the study of performative religion, The Secular Spectacle presents a generative narrative of secularism from the perspective of evangelical Protestants in the American South.

Book excerpt: In the 1940s through the 1960s, the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce promoted Cape Cod as "an alluring vacationland where the blue begins, and the frets of life cease." At the same time, a young, exuberant man with a camera, Richard Cooper Kelsey, arrived in Chatham. Kelsey began compiling a photographic record of small town life, of Cape Cod tourist landmarks, and the real people of Cape Cod with precision and clarity. He portrayed a Cape Cod of much beauty and charm, an earlier, more youthful time, and a time just within reach of memory. The photographs in The Forgotten Cape: 1940-1960 were culled from the over7,000item Kelsey Collection of the Nickerson Room at Wilkens Library, Cape Cod Community College.
