Book excerpt: From the man the Wall Street Journal hailed as "the guru of Revenue Management" comes revolutionary ways to recover from the after effects of downsizing and refocus your business on growth. Whatever happened to growth? In Revenue Management, Robert G. Cross answers this question with his ground-breaking approach to revitalizing businesses: focusing on the revenue side of the ledger instead of the cost side. The antithesis of slash-and-burn methods that left companies with empty profits and dissatisfied stockholders, Revenue Management overturns conventional thinking on marketing strategies and offers the key to initiating and sustaining growth. Using case studies from a variety of industries, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations, Cross describes no-tech, low-tech, and high-tech methods that managers can use to increase revenue without increasing products or promotions; predict consumer behavior; tap into new markets; and deliver products and services to customers effectively and efficiently. His proven tactics will help any business dramatically improve its bottom line by meeting the challenge of matching supply with demand.

Book excerpt: Dr. Dorriah Rogers, CEO of Paradyne Consulting Works, shares her last twelve years of consulting and research for numerous Fortune 100 and 500 companies, large government entities and the U.S. military in her book Decide to Profit: 9 Steps to a Better Bottom Line. The book is the result of discussions and intensive problem-solving with thousands of employees, managers and executives experiencing an inability to tie innovation and growth to bottom-line profit; where due to market pressure for growth, managers found themselves pushing decision-making to the lowest levels of the organization, and companies were finding themselves in need of a tool to ensure that these decisions were executed in a safe and profitable way. In other words, as their organizations grew, net margin and productivity began to erode, and a solution was required. Decide to Profit provides a step-by-step guide for organizations to connect all ideas and decisions that affect change to the financial goals of the company. Employees will have a clear systematic process that links decisions to the financial performance of their organization. Managers will have a ready tool to shape their organizational culture and business outcomes. With this process, both leaders and employees can adapt to increasingly tough competition and excel within their ever-changing markets, while ultimately maintaining or growing net profit. The 9 Step process has been vetted and implemented within some of the largest and most complex projects and organizations across North America, and it works. Each of the 9 Steps shows you how to avoid common decision-making mistakes, provides checklists and tools to foster a creative and idea-driven culture within organizations, and includes easy-to-understand and implement guidelines to ensure a financially sound future. The nine chapters chronologically and systematically outline each of the steps and its application, and include checklists, critical questions, and easy-to-use forms for managers and employees. Imbedded within each step are checks and balances and a process for accountability, so managers and employees can remain in sync in both their thinking and actions. A user code will be provided to book purchasers allowing them to access tips for easy-to-download forms on the Decide to Profit website. The website will also include a user forum, a best practices blog and tips from the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attacks against the pursuit of profit in eighteenth-century Britain have been largely read as reactions against market activity in general or as critiques of financial innovation. In The Problem of Profit, however, Michael Genovese contends that such rejections of profit derive not from a distaste for moneymaking itself but from a distaste for individualism. In the aftermath of the late seventeenth-century Financial Revolution, literature linked the concept of sympathy to the public-minded economic ideals of the past to resist the rising individualism of capitalism. This study places literary works at the center of eighteenth-century debates about how to harmonize exchanges of feeling and exchanges of finance, highlighting representations of communitarian, affective profit-making in georgic poetry as well as in the work of Joseph Addison, Daniel Defoe, Richard Steele, Sarah Fielding, Henry Fielding, David Hume, Samuel Johnson, and Laurence Sterne, among others. Investigating commercial treatises, novels, poetry, periodicals, and philosophy, Genovese argues that authors conjured alternatives to private accumulation that might counter the isolating tendencies of impersonal exchange. However, even as emotional language and economic language arose together in the 1700s, the attendant aspiration to form a communitarian economy in Britain was not fulfilled. By recovering an approach to moneymaking that failed to thrive, The Problem of Profit argues for the relevance of an unfamiliar narrative of capitalistic thought to today’s anxiety over the discord between personal ambition and public good.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first organized, sanctioned American stock car race took place in 1908 on a road course around Briarcliff, New York--staged by one of America's early speed mavens, William K. Vanderbilt, Jr. A veteran of the early Ormond-Daytona Beach speed trials, Vanderbilt brought the Grand Prize races to Savannah, Georgia, the same year. What began as a rich man's sport eventually became the working man's sport, finding a home in the South with the infusion of moonshiners and their souped-up cars. Based in large part on statements of drivers, car owners and others garnered from archived newspaper articles, this history details the development of stock car racing into a megasport, chronicling each season through 1974. It examines the National Association for Stock Car Automobile Racing's 1948 incorporation documents and how they differ from the agreements adopted at NASCAR's organization meeting two months earlier. The meeting's participants soon realized that their sport was actually owned by William H.G. "Bill" France, and its consequential growth turned his family into billionaires. The book traces the transition from dirt to asphalt to superspeedways, the painfully slow advance of safety measures and the shadowy economics of the sport.
