Book excerpt: A chef's tale of love, loss, hopes, dreams, fears, fires & oil. Who among us has the courage to keep chasing our dreams, even when those dreams shatter into a million pieces? In Chasing Harvest, culinary wunderkind Kevin O'Connor charts his remarkable journey from Californian hometown teen prodigy to globe-trotting Chef-at-Large for international olive oil producer Cobram Estate. Anchored around the company's olive harvests in both Northern and Southern Hemispheres, it reveals the trials and tribulations that led to this anointment, and the incredible produce, places and passions that continue to stoke the fires of his love for food. Part memoir and journal, part cookbook--all heart--it is a captivating and visually sumptuous meditation on oil and flame as well as a searingly honest, gloriously unrefined account of a chef's search for meaning, one plate of food at a time.

Built to serve St. Louis’s rapidly expanding African-American population, the grand new hospital opened its doors in 1937, toward the end of the Great Depression. “Homer G.,” as many called it, joined a burgeoning group of black hospitals amid a national period of institutional segregation and strong racial prejudice nationwide. When the beautiful, up-to-date hospital opened, it attracted more black residents than any other such program in the United States. Patients also flocked to the hospital, as did nursing students who found there excellent training, ready employment, and a boost into the middle class. For decades, the hospital thrived; by the 1950s, three-quarters of African-American babies in St. Louis were born at Homer G. But the 1960s and 1970s brought less need for all-black hospitals, as faculty, residents, and patients were increasingly welcome in the many newly integrated institutions. Ever-tightening city budgets meant less money for the hospital, and in 1979, despite protests from the African-American community, HGPH closed. Years later, the venerated, long-vacant building came to life again as the Homer G. Phillips Senior Living Community. Candace O’Connor draws upon contemporary newspaper articles, institutional records, and dozens of interviews with former staff members to create the first, full history of the Homer G. Phillips Hospital. She also brings new facts and insights into the life and mysterious murder (still an unsolved case) of the hospital’s namesake, a pioneering Black attorney and civil rights activist who led the effort to build the sorely needed medical facility in the Ville neighborhood.

Book excerpt: When firefighter Connor Mahoney decides to run for mayor, he’s confident of victory because of his brilliant idea to put Frank, a local canine hero who saved a drowning child, on the ticket with him. Then Connor gets some unwanted help from the Dogmothers, who think a pretty new arrival from Washington DC would make a perfect campaign manager for their highly-eligible bachelor grandson. Connor might like the idea of working with gorgeous Sadie Hartman, but she's doing her best to keep him at arm's length. Disillusioned by politics after her DC experience, Sadie doesn’t want the job, no matter how smoking hot the sexy firefighter is, or how much his sweet grannies push their matchmaking plan. But then Sadie learns that the race has another candidate—a man who was instrumental in wrecking her family. Uncertain the “dog and firefighter” ticket can win, Sadie launches her own campaign to be mayor of Bitter Bark. But everyone is in for a big surprise when a two-hundred year-old law is unearthed to upend the entire election. The only way for Sadie or Connor to save the town from a terrible mayor is to join forces in a way no one is expecting. As Sadie and Connor discover that the best part of running against each other is literally being against each other, it doesn’t take long to realize that sometimes winning the race means losing your heart. The Dogmothers – a spinoff series from the popular “Dogfather” books Hot Under the Collar - Book one Three Dog Night - Book two Dachshund Through the Snow - Book three Chasing Tail - Book four And more to come! Just like The Dogfather books, the covers of The Dogmothers series were all photographed at Alaqua Animal Refuge in Florida, using rescue dogs from the shelter and “local heroes” as models. Jake Bannerman, aka Jake the Rake, isn't used to doing the running, it's usually the other way around. He hasn't been given that sobriquet for nothing. Charlotte—Charlie—Allsop, newly arrived in Scotland, is in for a culture shock. She has no time for his attitude and no intention of making his life easy. If he wants her, it's up to him to make the first move. Which he does—just not in the way anyone expects. He teases, she retaliates, and when he discovers her middle name, she enlists his sister's help. As they continue the most unconventional courtship, where neither will give way, sparks fly. It's amusing to watch, not so much to be part of it. Until the cookery contest. When they both enter, the competition takes second place to their one-upmanship. Or does it? Will Jake be Jake the no longer rake? Will he have no need to be chasing Charlie? Only time will tell.

Book excerpt: Kathleen O'Connor (1876-1968) was born in New Zealand, brought up in Perth, Western Australia, and established her professional career in Paris where she settled in 1908, embracing the bohemian lifestyle of the intellectuals and creative people who gravitated to the city from all corners of the world. She lived in the artists' quarter on the Left Bank, breakfasted at the Cafe du Dome, went to artists' balls and exhibited successfully at the Autumn Salon and the Union des Femmes Peintres. Although she made infrequent visits to her family in Australia and two World Wars forced her to flee France, Paris remained her home until she was almost eighty when she returned to live in Perth. Nevertheless her influence in Australia was considerable, particularly in the 1920s when she wrote a regular column about Parisian fashion and society for a Western Australian magazine. In the early years in Paris she embraced an impressionistic style and her paintings of Parisians at leisure in the Luxembourg Gardens charmingly capture the flavour of the period. During the First World War she lived in Bloomsbury, London, where the art world was dominated by Post-Impressionism. Her palette and style changed dramatically and the rich colours and varied textures demonstrated her commitment to the new aesthetic. At the conclusion of the war she quickly re-immersed herself in Parisian life. Still-life, often incorporating autobiographical aspects, became her favoured subject and the site for her explorations of modernism. She became involved in the decorative arts and fashion world, providing designs for leading fashion designers Paul Poiret and Maurice Dufrene. The influence of Art Deco can be seen in some of hermajor tempera paintings and hand-painted textiles from this period. During the thirties her work was constantly mentioned in Parisian reviews and in 1936 she exhibited alongside Bonnard, de Chirico and Dufy. However, the Second World War put an end to her aspirations and Paris a

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1864 and 1877, during the height of the Plains Indian wars, Pawnee Indian scouts rendered invaluable service to the United States Army. They led missions deep into contested territory, tracked resisting bands, spearheaded attacks against enemy camps, and on more than one occasion saved American troops from disaster on the field of battle. In War Party in Blue, Mark van de Logt tells the story of the Pawnee scouts from their perspective, detailing the battles in which they served and recounting hitherto neglected episodes. Employing military records, archival sources, and contemporary interviews with current Pawnee tribal members—some of them descendants of the scouts—Van de Logt presents the Pawnee scouts as central players in some of the army's most notable campaigns. He argues that military service allowed the Pawnees to fight their tribal enemies with weapons furnished by the United States as well as to resist pressures from the federal government to assimilate them into white society. According to the author, it was the tribe's martial traditions, deeply embedded in their culture, that made them successful and allowed them to retain these time-honored traditions. The Pawnee style of warfare, based on stealth and surprise, was so effective that the scouts' commanding officers did little to discourage their methods. Although the scouts proudly wore the blue uniform of the U.S. Cavalry, they never ceased to be Pawnees. The Pawnee Battalion was truly a war party in blue.

Book excerpt: In Search of Wholeness: African American Teachers and their Culturally Specific Classroom Practices is a theoretical and practice-oriented treatment of how culture and race influence African American teachers. This collection of essays, edited by Jacqueline Jordan Irvine, assumes that teachers cannot become fully functional persons and competent professionals if their cultural selves remain denied, hidden, and unexplored. Part one reviews the literature related to teachers' race and culture. Part two includes research studies about teachers confronting issues of culture and race in their personal and professional lives. The final chapter focuses on the responses of three of the teachers whose stories are portrayed in the book. In addition to the compelling case studies, other topics explored include: multicultural professional development for African American teachers, African American teachers' perceptions of their professional roles and practices, a comparison of effective black and white teachers of African American students, the development of teacher efficacy of an African American middle school teacher, the professional development journey of an effective African American elementary school teacher, seizing hope through culturally responsive praxis, collective stories on culturally specific pedagogy. In Search of Wholeness is an indispensable and groundbreaking collection that administrators, students, and educators of all ages will not want to be without.
