Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte Bronte and Her Circle Dear miss nussey, - We had not seen the article in Sharpe, and very possibly should not, if you had not directed our attention to it. We ordered a copy, and have now read the Few Words about Jane Eyre. The writer has certainly made many mistakes, but apparently not from any unkind motive, as he professes to be an admirer of Charlotte's works, pays a just tribute to her genius, and in common with thousands deplores her untimely death. His design seems rather to be to gratify the curiosity of the multitude in reference to one who had made such a sensation in the literary world. But even if the article had been of a less harmless character, we should not have felt inclined to take any notice of it, as by doing so we should have given it an importance which it would not other wise have obtained. Charlotte herself would have acted thus; and her character stands too high to be injured by the state ments in a magazine of small circulation and little influence statements which the writer prefaces with the remark that he does not vouch for their accuracy. The many laudatory notices of Charlotte and her works which appeared since her death may well make us indifferent to the detractions of a few envious or malignant persons, as there ever will be such. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Charlotte Bronte The life of Charlotte Bronte has been written once for all by Mrs. Gaskell; but as no criticism of Miss Bronte's novels is possible apart from the story of her life, I have attempted the biographical sketch the following pages will be found to contain. For any lengthened quotations from Mrs. Gaskell's book (which is throughout referred to as G., the paging being that of the popular edition in one volume), I have the kind permission of Messrs. Smith and Elder. Mr. Wemyss Reid's monograph on Charlotte Bronte (Macmillan, 1877), is well-known, though whether the author performs the task he somewhat unnecessarily laid upon himself of proving that Mrs. Gaskell's portrait requires re-touching, is a question which is best left open for the consideration of the judicious reader of both books. Mr. Leyland's two volumes, "The Bronte Family" (Sampson Low: 1886), deserve to be read by every one, though, so far as he busies himself with Branwell Bronte, he fails to interest those who, to employ an American figure, "have no use" for that young man. Resident in a remote district, where education had made little progress, and where, consequently, there was no inducement to seek social intercourse beyond our own domestic circle, we were wholly dependent on ourselves and each other, on books and study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte Bronte and Her Sisters Scots blood, there is no evidence that there was a particle of blood other than Irish flowing in the veins of Patrick Branty. His parents were of the peasant class, although his father, Hugh Brunty, would seem to have followed for a long period a number of varied occupations, including work in a limekiln and work in a cornkiln. The book to which we owe the only glimpse of Patrick's par entage, The Brontes in Ireland, by Dr. Wright, is so full of invention that it is diflicult to derive therefrom fragments of truth concerning the ear lier Brontes, or Bruntys. It would seem clear, how ever, that Hugh Brunty married one Alice Mc Clory, who had been brought up in the Roman Catholic faith, but who, after her marriage in the Protestant Church of Magherally, adopted the re ligion of her husband.1 Ten children were born to Hugh and Alice Brunty, and of these Patrick, the eldest, alone has any interest for us. After such education as the village school af forded, young Patrick Brunty became a weaver. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In a letter to Miss Wooler, dated January 27 th, 1858, Charlotte Bronte wrote: "Villette is to be published to-morrow. Its appearance has been purposely delayed hitherto, to avoid discourteous clashing with Mrs. Gaskell's new work." The story was received, as its writer's friend and biographer tells us, "with one burst of acclamation"; but the laudatory notices only served to make the author's heart "swell with thankfulness to Him who takes note both of suffering, and work, and motives." But it seemed fated that each of her books should bring with it some jar in friendship or some disappointment in expectation. "Jane Eyre was the centre of a very vortex of discussion; "Shirley" touched for its writer the weakness in Greorge Henry Lewes's character; and now "Villette" brought forth a review in the Daily News which disappointed her in Harriet Martineau. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte Bronte, 1816-1916: A Centenary Memorial But what is unanimous, is not so much the warm praise of Charlotte Bronte, in which this band of writers, from their various points of View, ultimately agree, as the testimony they bear to the feeling she still stirs in us - to the delight she still gives to this later generation, after more than half a century. The security of her fame, we see, is, yearly greater, as her star rises surely and steadily to its place in the nineteenth-century heaven. Fluctuations of opinion there have been, and must always be, in the case of those who, like the Brontes, challenge opinion, and, so to speak, take it by force. But it seems to me that the fluctuations are over, and the verdict given. And the members of the Bronte Society, during the last twentyilyears, have certainly helped to make it what it is. Their unworthy President bids them now a grateful farewell. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Charlotte Bronte, Vol. 1 of 2: Author of "Jane Eyre," "Shirley," "Villette," &C The Leeds and Bradford railway runs along a deep valley of the Aire; a slow and sluggish stream, compared to the neighbouring river of Wharfe. Keighley station is on this line of railway, about a quarter of a mile from the town of the same name. The number of inhabitants and the importance of Keighley have been very greatly increased during the last twenty years, owing to the rapidly extended market for worsted manufactures, a branch of industry that mainly employs the factory population of this part of Yorkshire, which has Bradford for its centre and metropolis. Keighley is in process of transformation from a populous, old-fashioned village, into a still more populous and flourishing town. Book excerpt: On the two hundredth anniversary of her birth, a landmark biography transforms Charlotte Brontë from a tragic figure into a modern heroine. Charlotte Brontë famously lived her entire life in an isolated parsonage on a remote English moor with a demanding father and siblings whose astonishing childhood creativity was a closely held secret. The genius of Claire Harman’s biography is that it transcends these melancholy facts to reveal a woman for whom duty and piety gave way to quiet rebellion and fierce ambition. Drawing on letters unavailable to previous biographers, Harman depicts Charlotte’s inner life with absorbing, almost novelistic intensity. She seizes upon a moment in Charlotte’s adolescence that ignited her determination to reject poverty and obscurity: While working at a girls’ school in Brussels, Charlotte fell in love with her married professor, Constantin Heger, a man who treated her as “nothing special to him at all.” She channeled her torment into her first attempts at a novel and resolved to bring it to the world's attention. Charlotte helped power her sisters’ work to publication, too. But Emily’s Wuthering Heights was eclipsed by Jane Eyre, which set London abuzz with speculation: Who was this fiery author demanding love and justice for her plain and insignificant heroine? Charlotte Brontë’s blazingly intelligent women brimming with hidden passions would transform English literature. And she savored her literary success even as a heartrending series of personal losses followed. Charlotte Brontë is a groundbreaking view of the beloved writer as a young woman ahead of her time. Shaped by Charlotte’s lifelong struggle to claim love and art for herself, Harman’s richly insightful biography offers readers many of the pleasures of Brontë’s own work.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Hour With Charlotte Bronte Or, Flowers From a Yorkshire Moor The solitude of a gray old parsonage nursed her imaginative faculty, and in the absolute dearth of society she learned to think and to write. She lost her mother when she was five years old, and was left the care-taker of her younger sisters and brother, after the two eldest sisters had been sent away to school. Mr. Bronte did not know how to undertake the care and education of so many children, but he was a student him self and enforced his Spartan ideas of study upon his willing pupils. Fortunately, they were all the inheritors of his intel lectual tastes, and to this circumstance they owed all the pleas ure they enjoyed.
