When in 1847 Charlotte Brontë's successful novel Jane Eyre was published, it caused riot and rage because of how the topic "sexuality" was dealt with. In this paper I am going to explain the Victorian beliefs and notions regarding this topic. Furthermore I am going to reveal the attitude of the characters Jane Eyre, Edward Rochester and Bertha Mason towards sexuality. Before though, I will give a short biography of Charlotte Brontë, to depict how her own attitude differed from the social conventions and expectations of her time.

In meiner Hausarbeit bediente ich mich daher weitestgehend dieser Ansätze, um die unterschiedlichen Betrachtungsmöglichkeiten einer Textstelle aufzuzeigen. Nur an wenigen Stellen kann ich sie zur Unterstützung meiner Sichtweise anführen. Um überhaupt mit Jane Eyre mitfühlen zu können ist es wichtig, die Rolle der Frau zur Zeit des Viktorianismus zu verstehen und sich dabei mit weiblicher Sexualität ebenso zu beschäftigen, wie mit dem damaligen Rollenverhalten von Mann und Frau! Deshalb behandle ich dieses Thema kurz in Punkt 3, bevor ich mit der Interpretation des Textes in Punkt 4 beginne. Ich habe das Buch, und somit meine Arbeit, in fünf Abschnitte eingeteilt, die sich an den Lebensabschnitten von Jane orientieren. In jedem einzelnen Abschnitt beschäftige ich mich hauptsächlich mit derjenigen Szene des jeweiligen Abschnittes, die meiner Ansicht nach die Schlüsselszene bezüglich Erotik und Sexualität, bzw. sexueller Entwicklung darstellt. Am Ende der Arbeit fasse ich meine Ergebnisse kurz zusammen.

It consists of many ups and downs Readers will Surely going to enjoy the novel. It’s Heartthrobing and it’s very difficult to getup without reading the novel - fully.

Book excerpt: This thesis reads sexual power dynamics - taking pleasure in being hurt by or hurting someone, wanting to control someone sexually or to be controlled, and enjoying power struggles and negotiations of roles - as central elements of Charlotte Brontë's four mature novels. The argument explores the intersections of sex, play, power and agency in Brontë's work, drawing out the intricate, shifting, and often unexpected dynamics that underlie what can seem like stark, gender-based power differentials between her characters. While there is a long critical history of examining how erotic relationships in Brontë's novels develop through power struggles, such readings often cast these patterns of desire as either pathological, or (particularly in the case of submissive or masochistic female characters) as responses created wholly by societal strictures on female power and sexuality. Taking a reparative, sex-radical approach, this thesis rethinks literary intersections of sex and power as productive, not just problematic, and as ways of undermining and playing with, rather than just reinforcing, societal and gendered power structures. The introduction examines the critical history of reading sex and power in Brontë's work, situates non-normative sexual desire in Brontë's mid- nineteenth-century context, and shows how reading reparatively can create new insights into sexual power dynamics in literature. The argument examines embodied power and the erotics of mutual infliction of pain in Jane Eyre, shows how material things used as sexual mediators widen the erotic scope of Villette, reads the negotiation of sexual roles in Shirley as a way of managing and transcending the pain of its novel-world, and explores the idea of fantasy as an uncontrollable, unsettling form of intimacy in Jane Eyre, The Professor and the Roe Head journal.

Book excerpt: Examining a wide range of representations of physical, metaphorical, and dream landscapes in Charlotte Brontë, George Eliot, and Thomas Hardy, Eithne Henson explores the way in which gender attitudes are expressed, both in descriptions of landscape as the human body and in ideas of nature. Henson discusses the influence of eighteenth-century aesthetic theory, particularly on Brontë and Eliot, and argues that Ruskinian aesthetics, Darwinism, and other scientific preoccupations of an industrializing economy, changed constructions of landscape in the later nineteenth century. Henson examines the conventions of reading landscape, including the implied expectations of the reader, the question of the gendered narrator, how place defines the kind of action and characters in the novels, the importance of landscape in creating mood, the pastoral as a moral marker for readers, and the influence of changing aesthetic theory on the implied painterly models that the three authors reproduce in their work. She also considers how each writer defines the concept of Englishness against an internal or colonial Other. Alongside these concerns, Henson interrogates the ancient trope that equates woman with nature, and the effect of comparing women to natural objects or offering them as objects of the male gaze, typically to diminish or control them.
