Book excerpt: Victorious Charles: A Ladies' Man is a fascinating historical account of the lives of the nobility and the poor in 15th Century France, under the reign of King Charles VII. Charles VII was a warrior King who reigned at the time of France's decades-long war against Henry V's England. Charles is also often remembered for his numerous high-profile affairs, including one with the beautiful Agnes Sorel, known at the time as the Dame de Beaute. The book explores Charles' youth, his crazy mother, and the positive influence of his aunt, Yolande d'Aragon. Charles ruled during the time of Joan of Arc, "The Virgin Warrior" who fought valiantly for France in the war. She delivered Orleans from the English, before being burned at the stake after a religious court sentenced her to death, proclaiming her a sorceress. The late Caroline (Cally) Rogers Neill Sehnaoui was born in 1944 in Manchester, NH to a 16th generation American family of English and Scottish descent. Her father was educated at West Point and Princeton, and her mother's ancestor was William Barton Rogers, who founded MIT in 1861.

Book Synopsis The Correspondence of Charles Darwin: Volume 23, 1875 by : Charles Darwin

This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 996 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of the definitive edition of letters written by and to Charles Darwin, the most celebrated naturalist of the nineteenth century. Notes and appendixes put these fascinating and wide-ranging letters in context, making the letters accessible to both scholars and general readers. Darwin depended on correspondence to collect data from all over the world, and to discuss his emerging ideas with scientific colleagues, many of whom he never met in person. The letters are published chronologically: Volume 23 includes letters from 1875, the year in which Darwin wrote and published Insectivorous plants, a botanical work that was a great success with the reading public, and started writing Cross and self fertilisation in the vegetable kingdom. The volume contains an appendix on the 1875 anti-vivisection debates, with which Darwin was closely involved, giving evidence before a Royal Commission on the subject.

Book Synopsis The Correspondence of Charles Darwin: Volume 7, 1858-1859 by : Charles Darwin
Download or read book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin: Volume 7, 1858-1859 written by Charles Darwin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The letters in this volume cover two of the most momentous years in Darwin's life. Begun in 1856 and the fruit of twenty years of study and reflection, Darwin's manuscript on the species question was a little more than half finished, and at least two years from publication, when in June 1858 Darwin unexpectedly received a letter and a manuscript from Alfred Russel Wallace indicating that he too had independently formulated a theory of natural selection. The letters detail the various stages in the preparation of what was to become one of the world's most famous works: Darwin's On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, published by John Murray in November 1859. They reveal the first impressions of Darwin's book given by his most trusted confidants, and they relate Darwin's anxious response to the early reception of his theory by friends, family members, and prominent naturalists. This volume provides the capstone to Darwin's remarkable efforts for more than two decades to solve one of nature's greatest riddles - the origin of species.

Book excerpt: Monarchy, Aristocracy and the State in Europe 1300 - 1800 is an important survey of the relationship between monarchy and state in early modern European history. Spanning five centuries and covering England, France, Spain, Germany and Austria, this book considers the key themes in the formation of the modern state in Europe. The relationship of the nobility with the state is the key to understanding the development of modern government in Europe. In order to understand the way modern states were formed, this book focusses on the implications of the incessant and costly wars which European governments waged against each other, which indeed propelled the modern state into being. Monarchy, Aristocracy and the State in Europe 1300-1800 takes a fascinating thematic approach, providing a useful survey of the position and role of the nobility in the government of states in early modern Europe.
Download or read book Charles II written by J R Jones and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-21 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987, Charles II argues that the conditions affecting government and political activity changed constantly through the reign creating new situations and new sets of problems for the restored monarch and his servants. Charles and his ministers found themselves under almost constant pressures from the parliament, the Church, foreign states and organized public opinion that differed essentially from those encountered by previous rulers. These pressures proved to be the most important influence on Charles, making him concentrate almost entire on short-term tactics and eventually engage in complex manoeuvring to outwit the leaders of the first two political parties, the Whigs and his own Tory auxiliaries. The conditions affecting government differed sharply from one phase of Charles’ reign to another. Professor Jones charts the attitudes and the extent of Charles’ involvement in administration and politics from his exile through the Restoration, his relationships with Clarendon, Buckingham and Danby, the ‘Cabal’ of 1668-73, the mixed administration from 1679 and the contest with the Whigs to his personal rule during the last four years of his reign. This book will be of interest to students of history and literature.
