Book excerpt: This book contains the lectures presented at the Advanced Study Institute, 'Radiation Trapped in the Earth's Magnetic Field' which was held at the Bergen Tekniske Skole, Bergen, Norway, during the period August 16 through September 3, 1965. Approximately one-third of the time was devoted to discussion. The various Session Chairmen have summarized the essential points brought out in these discussion periods which were generally quite spirited. The authors and the publisher have made a special effort to rapidly publish an up-to-date status concerning the various aspects of trapped radiation. Almost all authors turned in their manuscripts prior to the end of the Institute and all prior to September 30, 1965. It was clearly recognized that rapid publication was essential in this rapidly changing research area. Special thanks are due to the Host, Dr. Odd Dahl, Chr. Michelsen Institute, for making all of the arrangements in Bergen, including excellent living and working facilities. Direct financial support was provided the Institute by: North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Advanced Research Projects Agency, Air Force Cam bridge Research Laboratories, Army Research Office, Defence Atomic Support Agency, and the Office of Naval Research.

Book excerpt: A uniform magnetic field perturbation of the 1/r coulomb field between the plates of a spherical quadrant electrostatic analyzer was calculated using action-angle variables. The effect of the uniform earth's magnetic field on the electrostatic analyzer flown on satellite 1963-25 beta was shown to be negligible for particle energies above 10 keV. For electron energies below 1 keV, the perturbation of the electron trajectories would not be negligible for analyzer plates with a mean radius of 5 cm. (Author).

Book excerpt: The report is concerned with rigorously establishing the existence of quasi-periodic motions for a charged particle in a magnetic field. The following results are obtained: The existence of quasi-periodic motions lying near the equatorial plane for a charged particle moving under the influence of the earth's magnetic field (considered here as a magnetic dipole). This proves the stability of the periodic 'equatorial orbits' for small values of energy. The existence of quasi-periodic motions which need not lie near the equator, exhibiting thereby the trapping of particles as observed in the Van Allen radiation belt. Moreover, these motions may penetrate arbitrarily close to the dipole, a result which was somewhat unexpected. This existence of quasi-periodic motions in a rotationally symmetrix magnetic 'minor field.'

Book excerpt: This textbook was developed to provide seniors and first-year graduate students in physical sciences with a general knowledge of electrodynamic phenomena in space. Since the launch of the first unmanned satellite in 1957, experiments have been performed to study the behavior of electromagnetic fields and charged particles. There is now a considerable amount of data on hand, and many articles, including excellent review articles, have been written for the specialists. However, for students, new researchers, and non-specialists, a need still exists for a book that integrates these observations in a coherent way. This book is an attempt to meet that need by using the theory of classical electrodynamics to unify space observations. The contents of this book are based on classroom notes developed for an introductory space physics course that the author has taught for many years at the University of Washington. Students taking the course normally have had an undergraduate course in electricity and magnetism but they come with very little knowledge about space.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solar energetic particles (SEPs) emitted from the Sun are a major space weather hazard motivating the development of predictive capabilities. This book presents the results and findings of the HESPERIA (High Energy Solar Particle Events forecasting and Analysis) project of the EU HORIZON 2020 programme. It discusses the forecasting operational tools developed within the project, and presents progress to SEP research contributed by HESPERIA both from the observational as well as the SEP modelling perspective. Using multi-frequency observational data and simulations HESPERIA investigated the chain of processes from particle acceleration in the corona, particle transport in the magnetically complex corona and interplanetary space, to the detection near 1 AU. The book also elaborates on the unique software that has been constructed for inverting observations of relativistic SEPs to physical parameters that can be compared with space-borne measurements at lower energies. Introductory and pedagogical material included in the book make it accessible to students at graduate level and will be useful as background material for Space Physics and Space Weather courses with emphasis on Solar Energetic Particle Event Forecasting and Analysis. Book excerpt: An introductory guide to global magnetic field properties, Earth Magnetism addresses, in non-technical prose, many of the frequently asked questions about Earth's magnetic field. Magnetism surrounds and penetrates our Earth in ways basic science courses can rarely address. It affects navigation, communication, and even the growth of crystals. As we observe and experience an 11-year solar maximum, we may witness spectacular satellite-destroying solar storms as they interact with our magnetic field. Written by an acknowledged expert in the field, this book will enrich courses in earth science, atmospheric science, geology, meteorology, geomagnetism, and geophysics. Contains nearly 200 original illustrations and eight pages of full-color plates. * Largely mathematics-free and with a wide breadth of material suitable for general readers * Integrates material from geomagnetism, paleomagnetism, and solar-terrestrial space physics. * Features nearly 200 original illustrations and 4 pages of colour plates

Book excerpt: This survey summarizes what is known about the magnetic field of the earth, based on information available through 1971. Observed phenomena are described and interpreted in terms of the most widely accepted physical explanations. An overview of the geomagnetic field and its dynamic relationship with its terrestrial and interplanetary environment is first presented as briefly as possible, followed by more detailed descriptions of geomagnetic measurements and experimental methods, precise current models and past behavior of the main field, regular variations in the field resulting from the motion of the earth, disturbance variations of the field produced by interplanetary environment, and dynamic processes occurring in the outer magnetosphere. Extensive references is a replacement for Chapter 11 of Handbook of Geophysics and Space Environment (Shea L. Valley, ed.), Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories and McGraw-Hill Book Co., New York, 1965.

Book excerpt: The access of charged particles to the earth from space through the geomagnetic field has been of interest since the discovery of the cosmic radiation. The early cosmic ray measurements found that cosmic ray intensity was ordered by the magnetic latitude and the concept of cutoff rigidity was developed. The pioneering work of Stoermer resulted in the theory of particle motion in the geomagnetic field, but the fundamental mathematical equations developed have 'no solution in closed form'. This difficulty has forced researchers to use the 'brute force' technique of numerical integration of individual trajectories to ascertain the behavior of trajectory families or groups. This requires that many of the trajectories must be traced in order to determine what energy (or rigidity) a charged particle must have to penetrate the magnetic field and arrive at a specified position. It turned out the cutoff rigidity was not a simple quantity but had many unanticipated complexities that required many hundreds if not thousands of individual trajectory calculations to solve. The accurate calculation of particle trajectories in the earth's magnetic field is a fundamental problem that limited the efficient utilization of cosmic ray measurements during the early years of cosmic ray research. As the power of computers has improved over the decades, the numerical integration procedure has grown more tractable, and magnetic field models of increasing accuracy and complexity have been utilized. This report is documentation of a general FORTRAN computer program to trace the trajectory of a charged particle of a specified rigidity from a specified position and direction through a model of the geomagnetic field. Book excerpt: This book discusses the behavior of a charged particle in a magnetic field that is nearly symmetrical about an axis of revolution. The theoretical treatment emphasizes the asymptotic behavior near the guiding center of the particle, where its motion is like that of a particle in a uniform magnetic field. Applications of the theory to cyclotron motion, betatron oscillations, and magnetron devices are also discussed.
