They lack long-range order and microstructural defects that are characteristics in crystals, such as grain and phase boundaries and dislocations. These new materials have demonstrated very interesting structural and mechanical properties derived from their homogeneity in composition and the absence of grain boundaries. Structural, mechanical or chemical properties, among others, may be even superior to those observed in conventional metallic alloys, and therefore attracted great scientific and technological interest. In this thesis project three different families of metallic glasses were selected to achieve a better understanding of amorphous alloys. First, a Ce-based alloy has been used to analyze a polyamorphic transition upon application of pressure to a more densely packed structure. X-ray diffraction and inelastic x-ray scattering data show a polyamorphic transition in the 2-10 GPa range, and this transition presents a hysteresis cycle between both compression and decompression data. The effect of this transition on mechanical properties is then evaluated. Second, a family of Fe-based metallic glasses, or amorphous steels, was selected to study their mechanical and electrochemical properties as a function of the structure and composition. The composition of the base alloy was first modified by addition of Yttrium in different concentrations as microalloying element and the structure was changed by thermal annealing, forming intermediate crystal/amorphous composites, up to a complete crystallization state. Finally, an entirely new alloy for biocompatible purposes has been designed, synthesized, and characterized. The basic structural characterization of this new Zr-Ti based amorphous alloy shows that is possible to produce the amorphous state in an alloy that does not contain toxic or unhealthy elements.

Some of these outstanding properties include exceptionally high strength, large elastic deformation, near-net-shape formability, and superplasticity. However, these materials are not commonly used in structural applications because of a lack of plasticity and a lack of clarity in terms of deformation and failure mechanisms. Furthermore, the electrochemical behavior of these materials with and without loading is not well defined. Thus, the objectives of this study were to define and model the electrochemical and mechanical behaviors of BMGs, in addition to the interactions between these. The electrochemical behaviors of Zr-, Ti- and Ca-based BMGs have been studied in various environments. Moreover, the electrochemical behaviors of several common, crystalline materials have also been characterized in the same environments to facilitate comparisons. In general, the Zr- and Ti-based BMG alloys demonstrated relatively good general corrosion resistance in all of the environments. Mean corrosion penetration rates (CPRs) were found to be less than 30 [mu][micrometer]/year for these alloys. On the other hand, the Ca-based BMG alloys were found to be highly active with CPRs ranging from 300 - 5700 [mu][micrometer]/year in a non-aggressive 0.05 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. Furthermore, most of these alloys were found to be susceptible to localized corrosion in these environments. However, the Zr- and Ti-based BMG alloys exhibited relatively high, positive values for both pitting overpotentials ... and protection overpotentials ... The Zr-based BMG commonly known as Vitreloy 105 (Vit 105) was selected for further studies. This material was fabricated at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory by arc-melting and drop-casting into a water-cooled, copper mold. Mechanical characterization of this alloy was conducted through four-point bend fatigue testing, as well as tensile testing with in situ thermography. Fatigue testing in air revealed that both the fatigue lives at various stresses and the fatigue endurance limit are similar to those reported for this material in uniaxial fatigue. This result alone demonstrates that the great differences in fatigue results reported in the literature are not due to differences in testing geometry. In fact, the larger scatter observed in four-point bend fatigue at a given stress range was found to be due to variations in material quality.

These materials are characterized by short range atom ordering without translational periodicity of the structure. Kinetic and thermodynamic metastability is one of the main characteristics generally related to metallic glasses, while their thermally induced microstructural transformations could result in deterioration or improvement of the functional properties. Due to their favorable magnetic, electrical, mechanical, and anti-corrosion properties, metallic glasses as new and attractive materials have found application in many areas of modern industries - electronics, construction industry, aerospace industry; as well as chemistry, biomedicine, and surgery.

Book excerpt: Metallic glasses are multi-component metallic alloys with disordered atomic distribution unlike their crystalline counterparts with long range periodicity in arrangement of atoms. Metallic glasses of different compositions are being commercially used in bulk form and as coatings because of their excellent corrosion resistance. This book was written with the objective of providing a comprehensive understanding of the electrochemical and corrosion behavior of metallic glasses for a wide range of compositions. Corrosion in structural materials leads to rapid deterioration in the performance of critical components and serious economic implications including property damage and loss in human life. Discovery and development of metallic alloys with enhanced corrosion resistance will have a sizable impact in a number of areas including manufacturing, aerospace, oil and gas, nuclear industry, and load-bearing bioimplants. The corrosion resistance of many metallic glass systems is superior compared to conventionally used alloys in different environments. In this book, we discuss in detail the role of chemistry, processing conditions, environment, and surface state on the corrosion behavior of metallic glasses and compare their performance with conventional alloys. Several of these alloy systems consist of all biocompatible and non-allergenic elements making them attractive for bioimplants, stents, and surgical tools. To that end, critical insights are provided on the bio-corrosion response of some metallic glasses in simulated physiological environment.

Book excerpt: Metallic glasses are very promising engineering and functional materials due to their unique mechanical, chemical, and physical properties, attracting increasing attention from both scientific and industrial communities. However, their practical applications are greatly hindered due to three main problems: dimensional limit, poor tension plasticity, and difficulty in machining and shaping. Therefore, further investigation of these issues is urgently required. This book provides readers with recent achievements and developments in the properties and processing of metallic glasses, including mainly thermoplastic forming of metallic glasses (Chapter 2), atomic-level simulation of mechanical deformation of metallic glasses (Chapter 3), metallic glass matrix composites (Chapter 4), and tribo-electrochemical applications of metallic glasses (Chapters 5 and 6).

This book was released on 2015 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microstructural control through heat treatments is one of the most important means of designing alloys to gain desired mechanical properties. As microstructural modifications in alloys are associated with creation of heterogeneities both in terms of chemistry (precipitates) and energy (defects such as dislocations, stacking fault and grain boundaries), they affect corrosion, especially the localized corrosion tendency of alloys. Contrary to this general wisdom, certain precipitation treatment in aluminium alloys has been found to impart high strength without sacrificing on uniform and localized corrosion resistance. Thus, the role of precipitates in influencing corrosion seems to be complex and needs a thorough understanding which may help to develop the guidelines for developing corrosion resistant structural alloys having high strength. In this study, three Al-based (Al-Ni-Y) metallic glasses with varying Ni content, namely Al87Ni9Y4, Al86Ni10Y4 and Al83Ni13Y4 were chosen as model alloy systems to investigate the mechanistic role of thermally-induced transformations or nanoscale precipitates on the corrosion properties. Annealing conditions (temperature and time) corresponding to different thermally-induced transformations such as structural relaxation, partial and full crystallization were selected based on the DSC thermograms. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were employed to characterize the structure of these metallic glasses before and after annealing. Surface characterization was done using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance techniques were employed to study the corrosion behaviour of these glasses in a freely exposed 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution of pH 6.5. Annealing in all the three glasses below their respective first crystallization temperatures caused reduction in passive current density, although they were not found to undergo any structural relaxation which is in contrast with the published literature. The present study found that the Y segregation to the surface due to annealing causes reduction in passive current density. Y segregation has also been found to affect electrochemical corrosion behaviour of the glasses even in the crystallized state.Formation of FCC Al precipitates caused an increase in passive current density in all the conditions, but improves the pitting resistance. It is found that Y is the main element responsible for better corrosion resistance of Al-Ni-Y metallic glasses and since FCC Al precipitates is free of Y; these precipitates tend to dissolve faster than the matrix causing an increase in passive current density. On the contrary, stable pits are formed only when the pit size exceeds a critical level. Below the critical size pitting potential might raise as the precipitates may be covered with Y and/or Ni oxides. Enrichment of Ni and Y in the matrix in the immediate vicinity of the precipitate might help to cover the precipitates with more Ni and Y, and also suppress the pit growth beyond the pit. In contrasts to FCC Al precipitates, the intermetallic phases (Al3Ni and Al19Ni5Y3) rich in Y and Ni resist selective dissolution, but their formation results in Y and Ni lean matrix surrounding them and so they can induce galvanic corrosion. Therefore, as high temperature crystallization caused coarsening of FCC Al and increase in the volume fraction of Y and Ni containing intermetallic phases, and Y and Ni lean glassy matrix, the glasses lost their passivity. Thus, this study emphasizes the role of the size of the precipitates, chemistry of the precipitates and the chemistry of the surrounding matrix in electrochemical polarization tendency of the glasses. Based on these observations, a phenomenological model has been proposed to satisfactorily explain the change in the observed electrochemical behaviour (both the passive current density and pitting potential, which was not done in the published literature) of the alloys due to crystallization.

A noncrystalline solid produced by continuous cooling from the liquid state is known as a glass. From the other point of view, a noncrystalline material, obtained by any other process, for example, vapor deposition or solid-state processing methods such as mechanical alloying, but not directly from the liquid state, is referred to as an amorphous material. At this moment, bulk metallic glasses (BMG) are appearing as a new class of metallic materials with unique physical and mechanical properties for structural and functional usage. Extreme values of strength, fracture toughness, magnetic properties, corrosion resistance, and other properties have been registered in BMG materials.

Book excerpt: This thesis consists of an in-depth study of investigating microstructure-property relationships in bulk metallic glasses using a novel quantitative approach by which influence of the second phase features on mechanical properties can be independently and systematically analyzed. The author evaluates and optimizes the elastic and plastic deformation, as well as the overall toughness of cellular honeycombs under in-plane compression and porous heterostructures under uniaxial tension. The study reveals three major deformation zones in cellular metallic glass structures, where deformation changes from collective buckling showing non-linear elasticity to localized failure exhibiting a brittle-like deformation, and finally to global sudden failure with negligible plasticity as the length to thickness ratio of the ligaments increases. The author found that spacing and size of the pores, the pore configuration within the matrix, and the overall width of the sample determines the extent of deformation, where the optimized values are attained for pore diameter to spacing ratio of one with AB type pore stacking.

Book excerpt: Metallic glasses are relatively new materials with a large potential for applications in various technical and biomedical fields. However, for efficient use of these novel materials with an interesting combination of properties, it is necessary to fully characterize them for their mechanical and electrochemical properties. Studies on the effects of chemical parameters (pH, temperature, concentration of reagent) and tribological parameters (load, sliding speed, counterbody, contact configuration) on the kinetics of the reaction (id est, the material removal rate) supply information on the dominant mechanisms governing the tribo-electrochemical behavior of metallic glasses. Although considerable efforts have been made to characterize their mechanical, corrosion, and magnetic properties, the study of their tribocorrosion patterns is in a rather unsatisfactory state, and very limited information is available. It is the purpose of this chapter to provide an overview of basic information on the tribo-electrochemical properties of most metallic glasses. This becomes crucial when such materials are to be considered in systems where solid surfaces are prone to mechano-chemical transformation processes.

The unique disordered structure of metallic glasses leads to unique mechanical properties, such as inhomogeneous deformation at low temperature and homogeneous deformation at high temperature, and brittle behavior induced by annealing. This dissertation address three critical issues related to the mechanical behavior of metallic glasses: 1. Identification of deformation defects in metallic glasses. We have conducted high energy X-ray diffraction experiment -- using anisotropic pair distribution function -- to characterize the size and density of defects in metallic glasses activated by external stresses. Our results based on the characterization method reveal the microscopic origin of ductility in some metallic glasses. 2. Identification of two local stress relaxation modes that control macroscopic mechanical properties in metallic glasses. Using the defect characterization method we developed, we revealed two different local stress relaxation modes in defect regions, which are responsible for inhomogeneous and homogeneous deformation respectively. 3. We developed structural rejuvenation method to improve and recover the compressive plasticity. The microscopic mechanism of structural rejuvenation was unveiled by structural study and molecular dynamics simulation.
