Book excerpt: Abstract: CO2 sequestration in deep subsurface environments has been proposed as an innovative strategy to lessen the impact of burning fossil fuels on Earth's atmosphere. In order for CO2 sequestration to be effective, the target formation must have sufficient porosity, permeability, depth and thickness to store CO2. The Mt. Simon Sandstone, a Cambrian arenite to arkosic sandstone in western Ohio may provide appropriate physical and mineralogical properties for effective CO2 sequestration. The goal of this research is to evaluate the Mt. Simon sandstone's volumetric capacities including connected porosity, pore size and pore volume, as well as to determine mineralogy and digenetic processes, to assess the formation's suitability for CO2 sequestration. Samples and measurements were performed on the ODGS 2627 Warren well, and on the ODGS 2843 Armco well to evaluate spatial continuity and vertical heterogeneity. Porosity and pore size distribution measurements were determined using mercury porosimetry and BET gas sorption. Grain size measurements were determined through the use of light microscopy. Results show a porosity range of 1-25%, a connected pore size range of 5-1612 nm, and a decrease in grain size from the base of the Mt. Simon Sandstone through the overlying Eau Claire Formation. Variations in porosity and pore size show that the formation is heterogeneous, changing substantially on a macro scale. Changes in grain size are representative of a transgressive depositional system. Mineralogical characterization of the target Mt. Simon Sandstone and surrounding formations used powder X-ray diffraction, SEM, and polarized light microscopy to show lithologic variations from arenite to feldspathic sandstone, with cementation that included quartz, illite, chlorite, carbonate, iron and titanium oxides, and iron sulfides. Results show heterogeneity in each formation that occurs laterally. Comparison of lithology and pore space reveals that mineralogy and diagenetic processes are the main factors controlling available pore space, and that clean quartz arenite provide the greatest porosity. CO2 storage calculations show that the Warren well location could hold up to 61.0 million metric tons, however this would not provide enough storage space to sustain a long term coal fire power plant.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Carbon dioxide sequestration into porous rock intervals beneath the Earth's surface is an emerging technique of reducing the amounts gaseous CO2 emitted by energy production through the burning of coal/peat. Target intervals of rock must have sufficient pore space, permeability, thickness, depth from the surface, and must be located beneath an impermeable geologic seal to serve as a reservoir for the sequestration of supercritical CO2. The Upper Cambrian-Early Ordovician Knox Supergroup including the Copper Ridge Dolomite, Rose Run Sandstone, and Beekmantown Dolomite formations found within the Aristech Well in Scioto County, Ohio may have all the necessary requirements to serve as a viable combination of CO2 reservoir and geologic seal. This research seeks to characterize samples drawn from these formations on the basis of petrography, porosity, pore size and distribution, permeability, bulk mineralogy, and brine chemistry to distinguish suitable sequestration horizons in conjunction with an overlying caprock. Light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, mercury porosimetry, and x-ray diffraction analyses established a porous and permeable reservoir interval including the upper Copper Ridge and entire Rose Run overlain by the impermeable Beekmantown Dolomite. The Rose Run Sandstone was the most favorable for CO2 storage, while vertical heterogeneity within the Copper Ridge Dolomite limited the reservoir thickness. Porosity measurements for the reservoir were between 3 and 8%, permeability was 16-50 mDarcies, while the caprock porosity was 1% and permeability of 7 mDarcies. Porosity and pore size distribution between and within samples is controlled by mineralogy, mineral nucleation, diagenesis, and heterogeneity. Volumetric estimations show that the Copper Ridge/Rose Run reservoir could hold up to 5.6 million metric tonnes of supercritical CO2 under the most favorable conditions.

Book excerpt: Obtaining subsurface data for developing a regional framework for geologic storage of CO2 can require drilling and characterization in a large number of deep wells, especially in areas with limited pre-existing data. One approach for achieving this objective, without the prohibitive costs of drilling costly standalone test wells, is to collaborate with the oil and gas drilling efforts in a piggyback approach that can provide substantial cost savings and help fill data gaps in areas that may not otherwise get characterized. This leveraging with oil/gas drilling also mitigates some of the risk involved in standalone wells. This collaborative approach has been used for characterizing in a number of locations in the midwestern USA between 2005 and 2009 with funding from U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory (DOE award: DE-FC26-05NT42434) and in-kind contributions from a number of oil and gas operators. The results are presented in this final technical report. In addition to data collected under current award, selected data from related projects such as the Midwestern Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (MRCSP), the Ohio River Valley CO2 storage project at and near the Mountaineer Plant, and the drilling of the Ohio Stratigraphic well in Eastern Ohio are discussed and used in the report. Data from this effort are also being incorporated into the MRCSP geologic mapping. The project activities were organized into tracking and evaluation of characterization opportunities; participation in the incremental drilling, basic and advanced logging in selected wells; and data analysis and reporting. Although a large number of opportunities were identified and evaluated, only a small subset was carried into the field stage. Typical selection factors included reaching an acceptable agreement with the operator, drilling and logging risks, and extent of pre-existing data near the candidate wells. The region of study is primarily along the Ohio River Valley corridor in the Appalachian Basin, which underlies large concentrations of CO2 emission sources. In addition, some wells in the Michigan basin are included. Assessment of the geologic and petrophysical properties of zones of interest has been conducted. Although a large number of formations have been evaluated across the geologic column, the primary focus has been on evaluating the Cambrian sandstones (Mt. Simon, Rose Run, Kerbel) and carbonates layers (Knox Dolomite) as well as on the Silurian-Devonian carbonates (Bass Island, Salina) and sandstones (Clinton, Oriskany, Berea). Factors controlling the development of porosity and permeability, such as the depositional setting have been explored. In northern Michigan the Bass Islands Dolomite appears to have favorable reservoir development. In west central Michigan the St. Peter sandstone exhibits excellent porosity in the Hart and Feuring well and looks promising. In Southeastern Kentucky in the Appalachian Basin, the Batten and Baird well provided valuable data on sequestration potential in organic shales through adsorption. In central and eastern Ohio and western West Virginia, the majority of the wells provided an insight to the complex geologic framework of the relatively little known Precambrian through Silurian potential injection targets. Although valuable data was acquired and a number of critical data gaps were filled through this effort, there are still many challenges ahead and questions that need answered. The lateral extent to which favorable potential injection conditions exist in most reservoirs is still generally uncertain. The prolongation of the characterization of regional geologic framework through partnership would continue to build confidence and greatly benefit the overall CO2 sequestration effort.

Book excerpt: Wettability is a key reservoir characteristic influencing geological carbon sequestration (GCS) processes such as CO2 transport and storage capacity. Wettability is often determined on limited number of reservoir samples by measuring the contact angle at the CO2/brine/mineral interface, but the ability to predict this value has not been explored. In this work, minerals comprising a natural reservoir sample were identified, and the influence of their surface roughness, surface charge, and location in the sample on contact angle was quantified to evaluate controlling mechanisms and predictive models. A core sample was obtained from Mount Simon formation, a representative siliciclastic reservoir that is the site of Department of Energy CO2 injection project. Quartz, microcline, illite, hematite, illite + hematite were identified as dominant minerals in the core, and contact angle [greek small letter theta] measurements were conducted over a wide range of pressure (290-3625 psi) at 400C. At supercritical conditions, individual minerals and the Mount Simon sample were strongly water wet, with contact angles between 270 and 450 and contact angle generally increased with surface roughness, suggesting that brine is trapped in roughness pits between CO2 and the substrate. There was no relationship between contact angle and surface charge. A thin section of the Mount Simon sandstone was examined with a compound light microscope, and reddish precipitates coating quartz and feldspar grains were apparent. These were evaluated with environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). ESEM images show precipitate morphology that is consistent with clay coatings. The EDS results identify regions of the precipitate with high iron content. Several predictive models for contact angle were evaluated, including the Wenzel, and Cassie-Baxter models, plus new modifications of these that account for alternative surface roughness geometries and/or the fraction of different minerals comprising the reservoir sample surface. Modeling results suggest the fraction of illite/hematite covering Mount Simon grain surfaces is the most important reservoir characteristics that control wettability. To our knowledge, this is the first study that provides mechanistic insights into the characteristics of individual minerals affecting the wettability of a natural reservoir sample.

Book excerpt: The Oriskany Sandstone, defined as a quartz arenite aquifer formation, is located throughout the Appalachian Basin, with primary oil and gas production in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. For years, it has been used as a hydrocarbon production and gas storage formation due to its favorable petrophysical properties. The structural complexity of the Oriskany is mainly present along the Appalachian Mountain range due to the stresses involved during their orogeny. Because of this, structural and stratigraphic influence of the formation causes regions of low permeability and porosity, thus leading to unfavorable conditions for both oil and gas production and injection. This study looks to focus on the Oriskany Sandstone region to explore the feasibility of CO2 sequestration. With the imperative to reduce CO2 emissions throughout the world, especially within the United States, there is a shift in focus from production of oil and gas to the use of the subsurface for carbon sequestration. Proof of long-term safety and efficiency is key to development of CO2 sequestration projects and requires proper coring, logging, and seismic analysis for deployment of well plans within specified regions. Techniques for tracking the CO2 and pressure plumes are necessary. This study focuses on analyzing the limited information available for a region of the Oriskany formation and synthesizes a reservoir model to define the feasibility of the Oriskany formation as a sequestration site in North Central Pennsylvania. The low values of permeability and porosity in the region lead to the consideration of hydraulic fracturing to attempt to expand the contact area into the reservoir. The significance of this study, which uses seismic, log, and geostatistical analysis to populate the reservoir simulator, determines the injectability of the formation and its storage capacity. Provided the limited data to characterize the formation in the vicinity of an existing well, a range of analyses was conducted, which include Bayesian analysis to populate a reservoir model with petrophysical properties and sensitivity analysis with respect to well injection capabilities. These analyses provide a wide range of results to compare when more data becomes available to better understand the formation at the location of the well. In addition, economics are considered, including the influence of monitoring wells and the influence of abandoned wells in the vicinity of the injection well. With an ammonia plant acting as the source of CO2, producing approximately 3,200 tons of CO2 per day, various injection cycles and fracturing scenarios are analyzed, resulting in anywhere from 6% to 25% dissolution into the formation brines, a key component when attempting to trap the CO2 over a long term. Although the current study's analysis of this area of the Oriskany may not be suited for CO2 sequestration, further evaluation of the effects of natural fractures, heavily present within this area, needs to be performed before a final decision is made.

Book excerpt: In this paper, a numerical model was developed to simulate reactive transport with porosity and permeability change of Mount Simon sandstone (samples from Knox County, IN) after 180 days of exposure to CO2-saturated brine under CO2 sequestration conditions. The model predicted formation of a high-porosity zone adjacent to the surface of the sample in contact with bulk brine, and a lower porosity zone just beyond that high-porosity zone along the path from sample/bulk brine interface to sample core. The formation of the high porosity zone was attributed to dissolution of quartz and muscovite/illite, while the formation of the lower porosity zone adjacent to the aforementioned high porosity zone was attributed to precipitation of kaolinite and feldspar. The model predicted a 40% permeability increase for the Knox sandstone sample after 180 days of exposure to CO2-saturated brine, which was consistent with laboratory-measured permeability results. Model-predicted solution chemistry results were also found to be consistent with laboratory-measured solution chemistry data. Finally, initial porosity, initial feldspar content and the exponent n value (determined by pore structure and tortuosity) used in permeability calculations were three important factors affecting permeability evolution of sandstone samples under CO2 sequestration conditions.

Book excerpt: The Cambro-Ordovician strata of the Midwest of the United States is a primary target for potential geological storage of CO2 in deep saline formations. The objective of this project is to develop a comprehensive evaluation of the Cambro-Ordovician strata in the Illinois and Michigan Basins above the basal Mount Simon Sandstone since the Mount Simon is the subject of other investigations including a demonstration-scale injection at the Illinois Basin Decatur Project. The primary reservoir targets investigated in this study are the middle Ordovician St Peter Sandstone and the late Cambrian to early Ordovician Knox Group carbonates. The topic of this report is a regional-scale evaluation of the geologic storage resource potential of the St Peter Sandstone in both the Illinois and Michigan Basins. Multiple deterministic-based approaches were used in conjunction with the probabilistic-based storage efficiency factors published in the DOE methodology to estimate the carbon storage resource of the formation. Extensive data sets of core analyses and wireline logs were compiled to develop the necessary inputs for volumetric calculations. Results demonstrate how the range in uncertainty of storage resource estimates varies as a function of data availability and quality, and the underlying assumptions used in the different approaches. In the simplest approach, storage resource estimates were calculated from mapping the gross thickness of the formation and applying a single estimate of the effective mean porosity of the formation. Results from this approach led to storage resource estimates ranging from 3.3 to 35.1 Gt in the Michigan Basin, and 1.0 to 11.0 Gt in the Illinois Basin at the P10 and P90 probability level, respectively. The second approach involved consideration of the diagenetic history of the formation throughout the two basins and used depth-dependent functions of porosity to derive a more realistic spatially variable model of porosity rather than applying a single estimate of porosity throughout the entire potential reservoir domains. The second approach resulted in storage resource estimates of 3.0 to 31.6 Gt in the Michigan Basin, and 0.6 to 6.1 Gt in the Illinois Basin. The third approach attempted to account for the local-scale variability in reservoir quality as a function of both porosity and permeability by using core and log analyses to calculate explicitly the net effective porosity at multiple well locations, and interpolate those results throughout the two basins. This approach resulted in storage resource estimates of 10.7 to 34.7 Gt in the Michigan Basin, and 11.2 to 36.4 Gt in the Illinois Basin. A final approach used advanced reservoir characterization as the most sophisticated means to estimating storage resource by defining reservoir properties for multiple facies within the St Peter formation. This approach was limited to the Michigan Basin since the Illinois Basin data set did not have the requisite level of data quality and sampling density to support such an analysis. Results from this approach led to storage resource estimates of 15.4 Gt to 50.1 Gt for the Michigan Basin. The observed variability in results from the four different approaches is evaluated in the context of data and methodological constraints, leading to the conclusion that the storage resource estimates from the first two approaches may be conservative, whereas the net porosity based approaches may over-estimate the resource.
