Book excerpt: Exponential distribution is one of the most-used distributions in the theory and practice of statistics. It has several important properties like being memoryless and having a constant hazard rate. The field of characterization is developed in different branches of statistics and applied probability. Ordered random variables are common in various applications in practice. In this book, characterizations of exponential distribution using ordered random variables are presented. Most of the known results as well as many new results are given in this book. The aim of the book is to present various characterizations of exponential distribution based on ordered random variables. The book is written on a lower technical level and requires basic knowledge of mathematics and statistics. Chapter 1 gives some basic properties of exponential distribution. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 give the characterization of exponential distribution based on order statistics, record values, and generalized order statistics.

Book excerpt: Problems of calculating the reliability of instruments and systems and the development of measures to increase efficiency and reduce operational costs confronted physicists and mathe maticians at the end of the '40's and the beginning of the '50's in connection with the unrelia bility of electro-vacuum instruments used in aviation. Since then steadily increasing demands for the accuracy, reliability and complexity required in electronic equipment have served as a stimulus in the development of the theory of reliability. From 1950 to 1955 Epstein and Sobel [67,68] and Davis [62], in an analysis of statistical data of the operating time of an instrument up to failure, showed that the distribution is exponential in many cases. Consequently, the ex ponential distribution became basic to research associated with experiments on life expectancy. Further research has shown that there are a whole series of problems in reliability theory for which the exponential distribution is inapplicable. However, it can practically always be used as a first approximation. The ease of computational work due to the nice properties of the exponential distribution (for example, the lack of memory property, see Section 1) is also a reason for its frequent use. AB a rule, data on the behavior of the failure rate function are used to test the hypothesis that a given distribution belongs to the class of exponential distributions, and order statistics are used to estimate the parameter of the exponential distribution.

Book excerpt: These three volumes constitute the edited Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Statistical Distributions in Scientific Work held at the University of Calgary from July 29 to August 10, ~. 974. The general title of the volumes is "Statistical Distributions in Scientific Work". The individual volumes are: Volume 1 - Models and Structures; Volume 2 - Model Building and Model Selection; and Volume 3 - Characterizations and Applications. These correspond to the three advanced seminars of the Institute devoted to the respective subject areas. The planned activities of the Institute consisted of main lectures and expositions, seminar lectures and study group dis cussions, tutorials and individual study. The activities included meetings of editorial committees to discuss editorial matters for these proceedings which consist of contributions that have gone through the usual refereeing process. A special session was organized to consider the potential of introducing a course on statistical distributions in scientific modeling in the curriculum of statistics and quantitative studies. This session is reported in Volume 2. The overall perspective for the Institute is provided by the Institute Director, Professor G. P. Pati1, in his inaugural address which appears in Volume 1. The Linnik Memorial Inaugural Lecture given by Professor C. R. Rao for the Characterizations Seminar is included in Volume 3. As discussed in the Institute inaugural address, not mL.

Book excerpt: Order statistics and record values appear in many statistical applications and are widely used in statistical modeling and inference. Both models describe random variables arranged in order of magnitude. In addition to these well-known models, several other models of ordered random variables, known and new ones, are introduced in this book such as order statistics with non-integral sample size, sequential order statistics, k-th record values, Pfeifer' s record model, k -records from non-identical distributions and ordered random variables which arise from n truncation of distributions. These models can be effectively applied, e.g., in reliability theory. Here, an order statistic represents the life-length of some r-out-of-n-system which is an important technical structure consisting of n components. For this application, a new and more adequate model is naturally suggested. Sequential order statistics serve as a model describing certain dependencies or interactions among the system components caused by failures of components. Record values are closely connected with the occurrence times of some corresponding non-homogeneaus Poisson process and used in so lled shock models. More flexible record models, and therefore more applicable to practical situations, are considered here. The main purpose of this book is to present a concept of generalized order statistics as a unified approach to a variety of models of ordered random variables. In the distribution theoretical sense, all of the models mentioned above are contained in the proposed model of generalized order statistics.

Book excerpt: In this work we find the moments of doubly truncated distribution of order statistics through sampling from an exponential distribution. Some recurrence relations are developed. Corollaries are dawn from these results for left and right truncated distribution of order statistics. These results and some additional results found are useful for characterization of an exponential distribution. Further results are derived on doubly truncated moments of order statistics. These results are applied to Weibull Distribution in section A and Power Function Distribution in Section B. The Skewness and Kurtosis of Order random variable of these distribution also derived graphically.

The basic building block of Ordered Random Variables is Order Statistics which has several applications in extreme value theory and ordered estimation. The general model for ordered random variables, known as Generalized Order Statistics has been introduced relatively recently by Kamps (1995).

Book excerpt: This updated classic text will aid readers in understanding much of the current literature on order statistics: a flourishing field of study that is essential for any practising statistician and a vital part of the training for students in statistics. Written in a simple style that requires no advanced mathematical or statistical background, the book introduces the general theory of order statistics and their applications. The book covers topics such as distribution theory for order statistics from continuous and discrete populations, moment relations, bounds and approximations, order statistics in statistical inference and characterisation results, and basic asymptotic theory. There is also a short introduction to record values and related statistics. The authors have updated the text with suggestions for further reading that may be used for self-study. Written for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in statistics and mathematics, practising statisticians, engineers, climatologists, economists, and biologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Univariate statistical distributions, with their basic properties, are an important part of advance statistics. The "Handbook on Univariate Statistical Distributions" includes most of the univariate statistical distributions that are used in practice. Author M. Ahsanullah has presented most of the common univariate discrete and continuous statistical distributions with their basic properties. For each distribution, most of the common basic properties-such as distribution functions, moments, and generating functions-are provided for easy reference. This information is integral to understanding and using these distributions. The first chapter includes definitions and concepts that are needed to study the distributions and some mathematical functions that are used in other chapters. Successive chapters include distributions and their generalized forms with basic properties and relations with other distributions. In addition, order statistics and record values are discussed for some of the distributions. The "Handbook on Univariate Statistical Distributions, " an excellent reference for researchers and practitioners who conduct in-depth statistical analysis, is the definitive guide to understanding the vitally important statistical distributions, designed with upper level undergraduate and graduate students in mind.
