Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been intensively investigated in the last few decades. Their origins differ: plant secondary metabolites, food/beverages aromas, fungal/bacterial volatiles, and others. VOCs typically occur as complex mixtures of compounds (e.g., monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, norisoprenoids, aliphatic/aromatic compounds, sulfur containing compounds, and others). They form through different biochemical pathways and can be modified or created during drying or maturation, thermal treatment, and others. Different conventional or modern methods of VOCs isolation, followed by the analysis with chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques, usually provide different chemical profiles and have been under constant modification and upgrading. The ecological interactions are mediated by VOCs (inter- and intra-organismic communication) and they can act as pheromones, attractants, or alleochemicals. Among them, chemical biomarkers of botanical origin or chemotaxonomic markers may be found. Many VOCs possess different biological activities, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, anticancer, and other activities. VOCs research from different sources is required to report their distribution and chemical profiles, and to discover new compounds. This Special Issue aims to attract up-to-date contributions on all aspects of VOCs chemistry, from challenges in their isolation to analysis, and on unlocking their biological activities or other useful properties

Book excerpt: Semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), such as phthalates, organophosphates, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), are emerging pollutants associated with serious health concerns. SVOCs are extensively used as plasticizers and flame retardants in building materials and consumer products. Because SVOCs are not chemically bound to polymers, they are slowly emitted from source materials to indoor environments, where people spend most of their time. However, due to our poor understanding of their sources, fate, and transport in indoor environments, effective strategies to reduce exposures remain unclear. The goal of this dissertation is to characterize SVOC emissions rapidly and investigate their fate and transport in indoor environments. The specific objectives are to 1) develop a novel rapid micro-emission-cell method to characterize SVOC emissions from building materials and consumer products; 2) develop a sensitive and accurate needle-trap-device (NTD) method for sampling and analysis of SVOCs in air; 3) investigate SVOC levels in indoor air, settled dust, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) filter dust in U.S. high schools. Emissions of phthalates, organophosphates, and PBDEs from a wide range of source materials (e.g., vinyl flooring, insulation boards, crib mattress covers, and changing pad foams) were characterized in the micro emission cell rapidly. The steady state SVOC concentrations were reached within minutes or hours, which were significantly reduced from the time of previous chamber studies (weeks or months). The developed NTD method was evaluated in both laboratory and field studies. The results were in good agreement with data obtained using conventional air sampling methods, but with significantly improvements on sensitivity, repeatability, reproducibility, and reliability. Sampling volume using the NTD method was reduced by a factor of four compared to conventional air sampling methods. A number of SVOCs were detected in U.S. high school indoor environments, including certain banned or severely restricted compounds. Significant impacts of seasonal variations and building characteristics were found for certain SVOC levels in different environmental media. This dissertation, which connects emission characterizations, measurement developments, and field studies in real indoor environments, will be valuable to identify major indoor SVOC sources, monitor indoor SVOC pollutions accurately, understand the fate and transport of SVOCs in indoor environments, and develop strategies to reduce SVOC exposures

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day, large quantities of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted into the atmosphere from both anthropogenic and natural sources. The formation of gaseous and particulate secondary products caused by oxidation of VOCs is one of the largest unknowns in the quantitative prediction of the earth's climate on a regional and global scale, and on the understanding of local air quality. To be able to model and control their impact, it is essential to understand the sources of VOCs, their distribution in the atmosphere and the chemical transformations which remove these compounds from the atmosphere. In recent years techniques for the analysis of organic compounds in the atmosphere have been developed to increase the spectrum of detectable compounds and their detection limits. New methods have been introduced to increase the time resolution of those measurements and to resolve more complex mixtures of organic compounds. Volatile Organic Compounds in the Atmosphere describes the current state of knowledge of the chemistry of VOCs as well as the methods and techniques to analyse gaseous and particulate organic compounds in the atmosphere. The aim is to provide an authoritative review to address the needs of both graduate students and active researchers in the field of atmospheric chemistry research.

They are released during a wide range of industrial, transportation and commercial activities and their emissions have reached high levels. This book provides a review of the occurrence, behavior and ecological implications of VOCs. Chapter One evaluates the biogeneration of volatile organic compounds produced by microalgae. Chapter Two investigates VOC pollution from industrial complexes and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Chapter Three illustrates the current knowledge of intra- and inter- organismal Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds (mVOCs)-based interactions, volatile perception, signal transduction and phenotypical responses in the receiver organisms. Chapter Four summarises the current state of knowledge regarding the impact of emissions from gasoline powered vehicles on historical ambient VOC concentration trends, and on the current ambient urban atmosphere of the South Coast Air Basin. Chapter Five discusses the oxidation of VOCs over cyptomelane catalysts. Chapter Six studies VOCs from truffles and false truffles from Basilicata in Southern Italy. Chapter Seven discusses the removal of VOCs in the air by total catalytic oxidation promoted by catalysts.

Book excerpt: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by phytoplankton play an important role in the formation of fog and clouds that mediate climate. However, they are not well quantified due to a lack of long-term sampling platforms in the marine environment. In this study on Sable Island, 31 contiguous days of VOC species were actively sampled onto thermal desorption tubes followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Source apportionment of the VOCs was achieved using USEPA Positive Matrix Factorization v5.0. The source identification of VOCs was augmented by the use of the National Oceanic Atmospheric Association, Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory model, visible satellite images and remotely sensed chlorophyll-a data from the Scotian Shelf. It was found that 27% of the total VOCs observed was associated with continental outflow, 40% of the VOCs were associated with marine phytoplankton emissions and 33% of the VOCs were associated with the combustion of carbonaceous material on the North American mainland.
