Book excerpt: The main objective of this study was to characterize the performance of HMA mixes based on four laboratory tests, including three simple performance tests (SPTs) dynamic modulus |E*|, flow time (Ft), flow number (FN), and a Loaded Wheel Tracking (LWT) test. In addition, two dynamic modulus prediction models, namely Witczak and Hirsch, were evaluated. Thirteen plant-produced HMA mixtures were selected in this study. Laboratory characterization tests included the dynamic modulus |E*|, flow number (FN), and Hamburg-Type LWT tests. Test results indicated that the |E*| test was sensitive to the nominal maximum aggregate size (NMAS) in the HMA mixture. Larger aggregates combined with recycled asphalt (RAP) tended to have high |E*| values at high temperatures. Both the Witczak and Hirsch models could predict the dynamic modulus |E*| values with a reasonable reliability. However, the Witczak model reliability increases for higher NMAS. On the other hand, the Hirsch model reliability increases for lower NMAS. The general ranking of the SPTs and LWT test was similar. In addition, this ranking was consistent with the field use of those mixtures in terms of their design traffic volume.

Book excerpt: The results of dynamic modulus testing have become one of the primarily used performance criteria to evaluate the laboratory properties of asphalt mixtures. This test is commonly conducted to characterize asphalt mixtures mechanistically using an asphalt mixture performance tester as developed in NCHRP Project 9-29. The typical test specimen geometry consists of a cylinder having a 100-mm diameter and a 150-mm height. This geometry is practical for laboratory-prepared specimens produced using a gyratory compactor. However, the specimen scale is problematic when the test specimen is prepared from field cores and the investigator wishes to isolate the testing to a single asphalt mixture material/layer. This is because most asphalt mixture layers, especially surface and intermediate layers, are placed having a thickness less than 150 mm. This study investigated the use of small-scale cylindrical specimens as an alternative means to conduct dynamic modulus testing of asphalt mixtures. To validate the small-scale approach, the dynamic modulus from small-scale specimens was compared to the dynamic modulus from full-size specimens (100 × 150 mm) using asphalt mixtures having a nominal maximum aggregate size (NMAS) of 9.5, 12.5, 19.0, and 25.0 mm. Small-scale cylindrical specimens having a diameter and height of 38 × 135 mm, 50 × 135 mm, 38 × 110 mm, and 50 × 110 mm were studied. Based on the findings of the study, for 9.5- and 12.5-mm NMAS mixtures, any of the four small-scale geometry dimensions appears to be a suitable alternative to the full-size specimen when the full-size specimen cannot be produced. For 19.0- and 25.0-mm NMAS mixtures, the two small-scale geometries having a diameter of 50 mm appear to be suitable alternatives to the full-size specimen when the full-size specimen cannot be produced.

Based purely on volumetrics, such design methods have little consideration of the mechanical performance of the mixtures. With the trend of moving the pavement research into more mechanistic based methods and targeting the ultimate goal to good field performance, it is necessary to develop a sophisticated mix design and characterization methodology which can help the designer understand the expected engineering performance of the mix at the early stages, at the same time, to have a more efficient tool to evaluate the quality of the mixtures. This research develops a comprehensive aggregate gradation and asphalt mixture design method that estimates the mechanical properties of the mix at early stage. In this method, strong correlations between aggregate properties, volumetrics, and mechanical properties are identified, making the VMA (Voids in Mineral Aggregate) an excellent media to link the properties of aggregates and asphalt binder to their engineering performance. The concept of the design procedure, especially the aggregate gradation design procedure, is largely based on an analysis of aggregate packing and interlocking. As a fast and convenient design method that emphasizes more on the mechanical performance of the mix, the new design method can be used to evaluate the quality of an existing gradation and mix design, and adjust the gradation of a new mix to satisfy both volumetrics and mechanical properties. In addition, the characteristics of asphalt mixture are studied using micromechanical based discrete element method (DEM) and macromechanical modeling. In DEM simulation, an image based ball clumping technique is used for simulating the angularity properties of aggregate particles. The DEM model is established and calibrated to describe the viscoelastic (dynamic modulus and phase angle) and viscoelastic plastic (strength) properties of asphalt mixtures with or without damage involved. As for macromechanical modeling, a constitutive model for characterizing the permanent deformation of asphalt mixture is explored by taking consideration of the directional distribution of aggregates (anisotropy), and the damage induced by plasticity.

Book excerpt: In this project the researchers studied a correlation between molecular structure and corresponding compositional analysis of asphalt binders of conventional hot mix asphalt mixtures (HMA) as well as mixtures containing reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and/or recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) with their cracking potential at intermediate temperature. The molecular size and structure of asphalt components of RAP and RAS undergo large changes during their exposure to environmental factors, which affects the physical properties imparted to their mixtures with conventional asphalt liquids. The composition of the mixtures prepared using a PG 70-22M binder was ascertained using thin layer chromatograpy/FID detection (Iatroscan), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The distribution of species by molecular mass as determined by deconvoluting gel permeation chromatographs, emphasizing in particular, the amount of asphaltenes as they are related to the age hardening of asphalt materials. The extent of sample aging is apparent from the carbonyl oxygen content from FTIR measurements of the mixtures. Fracture resistance of laboratory produced mixtures was assessed using the Semi Circular Bend Test (SCB) test procedure; a minimal value of 0.5 kJ/m2 was considered acceptable. Mixtures containing up to 5% RAS, 15% RAP and 15% RAP/5% RAS met the SCB standard. Molecular fractionation through GPC of mixtures containing RAS confirmed the presence of highly associated asphaltenes in greater concentrations than mixtures containing recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). High concentrations of high molecular weight associated asphaltenes (mol wt > 20K Daltons) which are present in RAS samples decrease the fracture resistance of the asphalt mixtures. The use of recycling agents, Cyclogen-L, Hydrogreen, Asphalt Flux and Re-refined engine oil bottoms (REOB), did not reduce the concentration of the highly associated asphaltenes, further they failed to improve the cracking resistance of the asphalt mixtures evaluated in this study. However, the recycling agents effected quantitative extraction of the RAS asphalt component.

Book excerpt: Asphalt mixture performance tests (AMPTs) are developed to complement the Superpave volumetric mix design procedure and to reliably measure the mechanical response characteristics of the asphalt mixtures. The AMPT protocols, such as dynamic modulus, flow time and flow number test protocols, and the computational algorithms for post-processing of data are in the development stages and require further refinement. In this investigation, AMPTs were carried out on asphalt mixtures with unmodified, polymer-modified, and crumb-rubber-modified binders. Dynamic modulus test was carried out for a wide range of temperatures and frequencies and master curves were constructed. It was observed that the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) procedure for master curves does not take into account the influence of phase angle, and this could hinder the effective use of this input in pavement design and analysis. Flow time and flow number tests were carried out for an extended time of 100 000 s (cycles) rather than the currently practised 10 000 s (cycles) protocol. The test data was used in assessing the various algorithms for evaluating flow values. A wheel tracking test was also carried out and it was found that the response of mixtures could be correlated to wheel tracking test results in a qualitative manner to the flow time test.

Book excerpt: In this study, the frictional characteristics of a number of Louisiana wearing course mixtures were evaluated through a suite of laboratory tests. Aggregates of different levels of micro-textures were used in the mix design. Asphalt concrete slab samples were prepared using a kneading compactor and were accelerated polished using a three-wheel polishing device developed by the National Center of Asphalt Technology for simulating the traffic-polishing effect on the surface texture of the pavement. After different numbers of polishing cycles, the frictional characteristics of asphalt concrete slabs were evaluated using a dynamic friction tester (DFT) and a circular texture meter (CTM). A comprehensive statistical analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of aggregate type and mix type on the frictional characteristics of the asphalt concrete mixtures. The international friction index F(60) values (calculated from the DFT and the CTM test results) were used to characterize the overall frictional performance of the asphalt concrete mixtures considered. The experimental results showed that aggregates with higher levels of micro-texture generally performed significantly better than those with lower levels of micro-texture in the DFT test. The open grade friction course and stone matrix asphalt showed better macro-textures than the Superpave mixtures in the CTM tests. A statistical grouping based on the terminal F(60) values of different mixtures showed that it is possible to achieve the same level of F(60) using different combinations of mix and aggregate types. This study demonstrates that blending low- and high-friction aggregates together can possibly produce an asphalt mixture with adequate field skid resistance.

Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 433: Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing documents and summarizes significant findings from the various experimental activities associated with full-scale accelerated pavement testing (f-sAPT) programs that have taken place between 2000 and 2011. The report also identifies gaps in knowledge related to f-sAPT and where future research may be needed. NCHRP Synthesis 433 is designed to expand the f-sAPT base of knowledge documented in NCHRP Syntheses 325 and 235, both with the same title of Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing. f-sAPT is the controlled application of a wheel loading, at or above the appropriate legal load limit, to a pavement system to determine pavement response in a compressed time period. The acceleration of damage is achieved by one or more of the following factors: increased repetitions, modified loading conditions, imposed climatic conditions, and thinner pavements with a decreased structural capacity which have shorter design lives"--
