Book excerpt: High hardness steels can be affected by delayed brittle cracking often attributed to hydrogen embrittlement. Improved resistance to hydrogen embrittlement would be beneficial to many industries including military, automotive, and high-rise construction. While other prevention methods include coating, trapping, and barriers, design efforts in this study were focused on improving intrinsic properties to be more resistant to hydrogen embrittlement. Four alloys targeting 477 – 534 HB were designed and produced in-house and compared against a commercial grade 500 HB alloy. Charpy V-notch (CVN) impact toughness and tensile specimens were made according to ASTM E23 and ASTM E8 to characterize mechanical properties. Hydrogen embrittlement testing was performed using ASTM E8 test samples electro-chemically charged in either sodium hydroxide or sulfuric acid with thiourea in solution. Results suggested that alloying for lower strength and better toughness by reducing C and Mn results in lower hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility.

Book excerpt: The effect of heat treatment on irreversible hydrogen trapping was investigated for high strength steels (4340, 18Ni (250), and AerMet 100), alloy K-500, and precipitation-hardened alloys (X-750 and 18Ni (250) steel), with the goal of providing insight into the factors governing the intrinsic susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement (HE). A potentiostatic pulse technique was used to determine irreversible trapping constants (k), which were compared with changes in strength and microstructure. Irreversible trapping in AerMet 100 is associated with two types of carbide, depending on the aging temperature. 4340 steel also undergoes a change in its principal type of irreversible trap with decreasing yield strength. The type of heat treatment for alloy K-500 can produce differences in trapping. Annealing increases k considerably, whereas aging has a negligible effect for the annealed alloy but can result in an increase for the unannealed alloy. 18Ni steel and alloy X-750 both show an increase in k with aging. Carbonitride particles provide the principal irreversible traps in the unaged alloys and appear to be one of the principal traps in aged X-750 but not in the aged steel. The order of the k values for AerMet 100, 4340, 18Ni (250), and two previously studied steels --H11 and 18Ni (300)--inversely parallels their threshold stress intensities for stress corrosion cracking. A correlation was found between k and the observed resistance to HE also for annealed/aged and direct-aged alloy K-500, alloys X-750 and 718, and 18Ni (250) steel and alloy 718.

HE is primarily responsible for the degradation of mechanical performances of a number of metals and alloys that are used nowadays. Among them, high strength steels owing to their widespread applications also suffer from HE failures to a great deal. Hence, this thesis focuses on fundamental issues influencing the susceptibility of three different grades of high strength steels designed for fastener applications.The present work includes investigation of mechanical properties both in presence and absence of hydrogen, microstructural characterisations and direct hydrogen quantification. The mechanical property test methodology is a modification of the ASTM F1624 standard test method to determine hydrogen embrittlement threshold in steels, which facilitates a unique approach to investigate the HE susceptibility of these steel grades. The microstructural characterisation process involves scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to identify the potential hydrogen trap states in microstructure, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Microstructural characterisation also provides useful information to predict local microstructural evolution in the presence of hydrogen and stress. Altogether, a structure-property relationship has been developed for these materials employing a comprehensive investigation process. In addition to it, fracture surface mapping using SEM indicates the mechanisms of failure associated with HE process in these materials. And finally, direct hydrogen quantification methodology using thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) provides further experimental evidence to the above-mentioned facts. Thus, in this work a combined approach involving various research techniques and knowledge has been utilised to investigate the susceptibility of the steel grades and rank them according to their performances under the influence of hydrogen." --

Book excerpt: The resistance of an alloy to hydrogen embrittlement (HE) is strongly influenced by the presence of microstructural heterogeneities, which can provide sites to trap hydrogen. The entry and trapping of hydrogen in a range of high-strength alloys have been investigated with a technique referred to as hydrogen ingress analysis by potentiostatic Pulsing (HIAPP). Data were analyzed by using a diffusion/trapping model to determine entry and trapping parameters for high-strength steels, Precipitation-hardened and work-hardened nickel-base alloys, and titanium alloys. For most of the alloys studied, the observed resistance to HE appeared to be determined primarily by the alloy's intrinsic Susceptibility as defined by the trapping characteristics; that is, the H entry flux generally has only a secondary effect on the resistance to HE. However, in one case, the HE resistance was attributable to a low entry flux. This type of case highlights the need for characterizing alloys in terms of both trapping capability and rate of H entry to account for differences observed in their HE resistance.

Improved resistance to hydrogen embrittlement would be beneficial to many industries including construction, automotive, and military. A comparison study was performed to assess the hydrogen susceptibility of select commercially available and in-house designed HHS alloys. Slow strain rate tensile tests, performed with specimens charged with various levels of hydrogen, provided a macroscopic view of the onset of hydrogen embrittlement. Hydrogen permeation and thermal desorption spectroscopy tests determined the uptake and diffusivity of hydrogen through the material. The evaluation of hydrogen susceptibility for various HHS alloys provided a baseline for the design of an HHS alloy containing hydrogen embrittlement mitigation strategies. By incorporating strong hydrogen traps, titanium carbide and epsilon carbide, a HHS was produced that demonstrated a lower sensitivity to hydrogen embrittlement
