This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the pollution found in highway runoff is both directly and indirectly contributed by vehicles such as cars and trucks. The constituents that contribute the majority of the pollution, such as metals, chemical oxygen demand, oil and grease, are generally deposited on the highways. These can become very harmful and detrimental to human health when they come in contact with our water system. The connecting tie between these harmful highway-made pollution and our water system, which includes our ground waters and surface waters, is rainfall. The main objective of this runoff study was to characterize and assess the quantity and quality of the storm water runoff of a bridge deck that discharged into a receiving water body. The bridge deck and the creek were located in the coastal margin region in the southeast area of Texas on the border of Harris and Galveston counties. Flow-activated water samplers and flow-measuring devices were installed to quantitatively determine the rate of flow of the bridge deck and determine different pollutant loading by sampling the receiving water body (Clear Creek). The collected samples were analyzed for total suspended solids, toxic metals, and other relevant constituents of concerns. The results illustrated that the runoff from the bridge deck exhibited low total suspended solids concentrations (which were highest in the creek). However, other metal constituents like the zinc and cooper concentration were high and above standards. The phosphate concentrations in the creek were the highest and exceeded EPA standards. Several nitrate concentrations were also noticeably above EPA standards.

Download or read book Recent Progress in Computational Sciences and Engineering (2 vols) written by Theodore Simos and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 1600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together selected contributed papers presented at the International Conference of Computational Methods in Science and Engineering (ICCMSE 2006), held in Chania, Greece, October 2006. The conference aims to bring together computational scientists from several disciplines in order to share methods and ideas. The ICCMSE is unique in its kind. It regroups original contributions from all fields of the traditional Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine and all branches of Engineering. It would be perhaps more appropriate to define the ICCMSE as a conference on computational science and its applications to science and engineering. Topics of general interest are: Computational Mathematics, Theoretical Physics and Theoretical Chemistry. Computational Engineering and Mechanics, Computational Biology and Medicine, Computational Geosciences and Meteorology, Computational Economics and Finance, Scientific Computation. High Performance Computing, Parallel and Distributed Computing, Visualization, Problem Solving Environments, Numerical Algorithms, Modelling and Simulation of Complex System, Web-based Simulation and Computing, Grid-based Simulation and Computing, Fuzzy Logic, Hybrid Computational Methods, Data Mining, Information Retrieval and Virtual Reality, Reliable Computing, Image Processing, Computational Science and Education etc. More than 800 extended abstracts have been submitted for consideration for presentation in ICCMSE 2005. From these 500 have been selected after international peer review by at least two independent reviewers.
Book Synopsis Stormwater Management for Transportation Facilities by : Shaw L. Yu
Download or read book Stormwater Management for Transportation Facilities written by Shaw L. Yu and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1993 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to highway design engineers, maintenance engineers, environmental personnel, administrators, and others responsible for the design, operation, and maintenance of stormwater management for highways and ancillary facilities. Information is presented on the basic hydrology needed to assess stormwater impacts and on the effectiveness of stormwater management techniques. Designers of highway facilities must consider stormwater management requirements within the context of both localized runoff impacts, as well as downstream effects of runoff. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the management of both stormwater quantity and stormwater quality. Stormwater quantity includes an overview of methods of estimating runoff and management control practices. Stormwater quality management includes discussions of the most prevalent pollutants and best management practices (BMP) to minimize pollutants from transportation facilities. Various types of structural and non-structural methods are described, including their design considerations and efficiencies. Several stormwater management models are described, with special concern for highway applications. Highlights from the 1990 National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits are presented.
Book Synopsis Advances in Urban Stormwater and Agricultural Runoff Source Controls by : J. Marsalek
Download or read book Advances in Urban Stormwater and Agricultural Runoff Source Controls written by J. Marsalek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notwithstanding past achievements, flood damage continues to rise throughout the world as the magnitudes of floods increase, partly as a result of poor land management and partly by climate change, growing populations and continuing development in flood-prone areas, and the aging and deterioration of flood defences. One of the major goals of water management is the protection of society from floods. That issue is addressed here in terms of such broad issues as flood analysis, flood impact, non-structural and structural flood management measures. Non-structural measures focus on flood plain management, flood insurance, flood forecasting and warning, and emergency measures during floods. Structural measures focus on catchment management, embankments and flood reservoirs. Post-flood measures are also discussed. Future planning of flood management should be based on a clear understanding of the effectiveness interventions and their impacts on river catchment ecosystems.
