However, there has not been systematic characterization and performance data development for these materials. This study intends to systematically characterize the Alaskan asphalt binders and mixtures and identify the performance benefits of these materials through laboratory tests and field sections monitoring. The research contains five sections: 1) a comprehensive characterization on the morphologies, chemical and rheological properties of modified asphalt binders and mechanical properties of asphalt mixtures with these modified asphalt binders. The lab testing results were further confirmed through field surveys of recent paving projects constructed in Alaska and data from pavement sections in long-term pavement performance database. 2) an investigation on the applicability of the multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) tests to evaluate the rutting resistance of Alaskan modified asphalt binders. Within the scope of the study, significance of MSCR key testing factors was assessed through four test methods with different testing protocols and procedures. 3) an evaluation of cracking susceptibility of Alaskan modified asphalt binders using various chemical and rheological indices. 4) an investigation on the connections between the chemical changes by oxidation with the rheological parameters. 5) A study to characterize the fatigue behaviors of the Alaskan highly polymerized asphalt binders using newly developed linear amplitude sweep (LAS) test with viscoelastic continuum damage (VECD) model"--Abstract, page iv.

Book excerpt: Recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) material has been combined with hot-mix asphalt (HMA) paving for several decades to reduce construction costs and environmental impacts. In Alaska, the HMA specification allows up to 15% RAP for Type-II A mixes (typically used in wearing courses) and 25% for Type II-B mixes (used in wearing or base courses). Highway construction projects statewide are expected to see an increase in the use of RAP in future mix designs. Pavement engineers use mechanistic procedures (e.g. Alaska Flexible Pavement Design software and Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide) to develop flexible pavement design alternatives. These procedures require material engineering properties as an input source. Consequently, it is essential to properly establish the engineering properties of HMA mixtures containing RAP. In order to characterize Alaskan HMA materials containing RAP, this study evaluated 11 HMA mixtures comprised of three typical Alaskan asphalt binders (PG 52-28, PG 58-34 and PG 52-40) containing 0%, 25% and 35% RAP that were either produced in the lab or a hot-plant (i.e. collected from actual paving projects in Alaska). Various binder and mix properties were determined including; true high binder grades, complex shear modulus (G*) and phase angle (delta) at high performance temperatures, as well as asphalt mixture performance tests (AMPT); dynamic modulus (E*) and flow number (FN). The original (h-based) and the modified (G*-based) Witczak (E*) predictive models were evaluated for these mixtures based on job mix formulae availability for use in mechanistic design procedures. It was found that the incorporation of RAP into Alaskan HMA increased E* and FN of the mixtures, which indicates that the addition of RAP increased the stiffness and rutting resistance of the mixtures tested. A local calibration of the Witczak predictive models may be required for increased accuracy of E* predictions. For Alaskan conditions, a savings of $13.60/ton of mix was estimated for a 25% RAP mix. For an 18-feet wide one lane-mile of HMA mat, it is estimated to have a 21% savings in the 25% RAP mix compared to the conventional virgin (no RAP) mix.

Book excerpt: In order to properly characterize modified asphalt binders and mixes for Alaskan pavements, this study evaluated properties of 13 asphalt binders typically used in Alaska from three different suppliers, and 10 hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures which were either produced in the lab or collected from existing paving projects in Alaska. Various binder and mixture engineering properties were determined, including true high binder grades, complex modulus (G*), and phase angle ( ́) at high performance temperatures, multiple stress creep recovery rate and compliance, bending beam rheometer stiffness and m-value, Glover-Rowe parameter, T, rheological index, and crossover frequency for binders, and rut depth, critical strain energy release rate (Jc), Indirect tensile (IDT) creep stiffness and strength for mixtures. Binder cracking temperatures were determined using asphalt binder cracking device. Mixture cracking temperatures were determined with IDT creep compliance and strength data. It was found that rutting and cracking resistances of the mixtures with highly modified binders were better than the mixture with unmodified asphalt binder (PG 52-28). Future recommendations for highly modified asphalt binders applications and research were provided based on laboratory testing results and field survey evaluation.

Book excerpt: The overall objective of this study was to determine if the Superpave high-temperature rheological properties of polymer-modified asphalt binders correlate to asphalt mixture rutting resistance. An emphasis was placed on evaluating polymer-modified asphalt binders with identical (or close) high-temperature performance grades (PG's), but varied polymer chemistries. Eleven asphalt binders were obtained for this study: two unmodified asphalt binders, an air-blown asphalt binder, and eight polymer-modified asphalt binders. High-temperature asphalt binder properties were measured by a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). Mixture rutting resistance was measured by repeated shear at constant height (RSCH), and the French Pavement Rutting Tester (French PRT). The first objective was to verify the findings of a previous study using a different aggregate. In the previous study, it was found that the Superpave high-temperature asphalt binder properties correlated to mixture rutting resistance with few outliers, and a change in high-temperature PG from 70 to 76 increased rutting resistance. However, the correlation between RSCH and asphalt binder G*/sind (delta) depended on DSR frequency. The data suggested that a low DSR frequency, such as 0.1 rad/s, might provide a better grading system than the standard DSR frequency of 10.0 rad/s. This would require a change in the current asphalt binder specification. A diabase aggregate was used in a previous study. The data using a second aggregate, a limestone aggregate, in combination with four of the asphalt binders, agreed with the findings from the diabase mixtures. The second objective was to retest the diabase mixtures at 70 degrees Celsius using RSCH. The test temperatures used in the previous study were 50 degrees Celsius for RSCH and 70 degrees Celsius for the French PRT. The polymer-modified asphalt binders had continuous high-temperature PG's ranging from 71 to 77. Therefore, it was recommended that the test temperature for RSCH be increased to 70 degrees Celsius. Again, the correlation between RSCH and G*/sind was dependent on DSR frequency. The data suggested that a low DSR frequency, such as 0.1 rad/s, might provide a better grading system. However, it is not known whether this finding applies to pavements, or is related to the accelerated nature of the RSCH test. Furthermore, G*/sind (delta) at 0.1 rad/s did not clearly provide a better correlation to RSCH than the high-temperature PG's of the asphalt binders. The degree of correlation between the French PRT and G*/sind at 70 degrees Celsius did not depend on DSR frequency, and there was only one outlier. A correlation between the French PRT and high-temperature PG provided no obvious outliers. No changes to the specification are recommended based on the French PRT results.

There is an urgent demand for road materials that can minimize fracture at low temperatures and increase resistance to deformation at high temperatures. The function of asphalt is to bind aggregate to protect it from water and other harmful agents. In the beginning asphalt was ideal for this purpose, but recently traffic loads have increased and environmental factors have deteriorated more rapidly than before. Asphalt is a byproduct of crude oil in the refining process, and it is considered a complex heterogeneous mixture of hydrocarbons. Asphalt modification has become an important research area, using several methods and new materials as modifiers.

Book excerpt: Different technologies, namely foamed asphalt, synthetic waxes, zeolites, and chemical additives, are used to produce warm mix asphalt (WMA). This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of using different amounts of an amine-based chemical WMA additive on the rheology, performance grade (PG), and moisture-induced damage potential of an asphalt binder (PG 58-28). Superpave specifications were used to evaluate the rheological properties and PG of the asphalt binder. Also, a mechanistic approach-based on the surface free energy (SFE) method was used to evaluate the moisture-induced damage potential of the asphalt binder combined with commonly used aggregates in an asphalt mix. It was found that the dynamic viscosity of the asphalt binder was not significantly affected after blending it with the WMA additive. It was also observed that the Superpave high-temperature PG and the rutting factor did not reduce by an increase in the WMA additive content. However, the continuous low-temperature PG of the asphalt binder decreased with an increase in the amount of WMA additive. Furthermore, it was found that the fatigue resistance increased after blending the binder with the WMA additive. The SFE results of the asphalt binder revealed that the WMA additive used in this study reduced the moisture-induced damage potential of the asphalt mixes. However, the extent of this improvement was found to largely depend on the aggregate type. The outcomes of this study are expected to help better understand the influence of amine-based chemical WMA additives on rheological and long-term performance of asphalt mix.
