Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Present-day scienceand technology have become increasingly based on studies and applications of thin films. This is especiallytrue of solid-state physics, semiconduc tor electronics, integrated optics, computer science, and the like. In these fields, it is necessary to use filmswith an ordered structure, especiallysingle-crystallinefilms, because physical phenomena and effects in such films are most reproducible. Also, active parts of semiconductor and other devices and circuits are created, as a rule, in single-crystal bodies. To date, single-crystallinefilms have been mainly epitaxial (or heteroepitaxial); i.e., they have been grown on a single-crystalline substrate, and principal trends, e.g., in the evolution of integrated circuits (lCs), have been based on continuing reduction in feature size and increase in the number of components per chip. However, as the size decreases into the submicrometer range, technological and physical limitations in integrated electronics become more and more severe. It is generally believed that a feature size of about 0.1um will have a crucial character. In other words, the present two-dimensional ICs are anticipated to reach their limit of minimization in the near future, and it is realized that further increase of packing density and/or functions might depend on three-dimensional integration. To solve the problem, techniques for preparation of single-crystalline films on arbitrary (including amorphous) substrates are essential.

Book excerpt: While the original focus of this long-standing series from the Materials Research Society was on hydrogenated amorphous silicon, the symposia have now expanded to incorporate microcrystalline silicon. The two, in fact, are very closely connected since the latter material can be grown by making comparatively small changes to the deposition conditions for amorphous silicon. This book offers an interesting variety of papers on deposition techniques, materials properties, characterization methods and devices - nearly all focused on thin-film forms of hydrogenated silicon. Topics include: Staebler-Wronski and fundamental defect studies in amorphous silicon; the story of hydrogen in amorphous silicon; photoelectric properties of amorphous silicon; deposition and properties of microcrystalline silicon; deposition studies for amorphous silicon and related materials; solar cells; thin-film transistors and sensors and novel device concepts.

Book excerpt: In this thesis we report on the metal-mediated-thermally induced changes of the structural and optical properties of hydrogenated amorphous silicon deposited by hot-wire CVD, where aluminium and nickel were used to induce crystallization. The metal-coated amorphous silicon was subjected to a thermal annealing regime of between 150 and 520°C. The structural measurements, obtained by Raman spectroscopy, show partial crystallization occurring at 350 °C. At the higher annealing temperatures of 450°C and 520°C complete crystallization occurs. Reflection and transmission measurements in the UV-visible range were then used to extract the optical properties. By adopting the effective medium approximation a single optical model could be constructed that could successfully model material that was in different structural phases, irrespective of metal contamination. Changes in the absorption of the material in various stages of transition were confirmed with a directly measured absorption technique, and the modelled absorption closely followed the same trends This study forms part of the larger overall solar cell research project, of which the primary aim is to eventually develop a silicon solar panel that optimises the characteristics for best performance.

Book excerpt: Real-time, in-situ characterization of hot-wire chemical vapor deposition (HWCVD) growth of hydrogenated silicon (Si:H) thin films offers unique insight into the properties of the materials and mechanisms of their growth. We have used in-situ spectroscopic ellipsometry to characterize Si:H crystallinity as a function of film thickness and deposition conditions. We find that the transition from amorphous to microcrystalline growth is a strong function of film thickness and hydrogen dilution, and a weak function of substrate temperature. We have expressed this information in terms of a color-coded phase-space map of the amorphous to microcrystalline transition in HWCVD growth on crystalline Si substrates.

The three day programme consisted of nine oral sessions; a poster session and a plenary talk giving an overview of current topics in hard magnetic materials. Scientists involved in basic as well as applied research concentrated their discussions on the fundamental processes relevant for the formation of metastable alloys such as amorphous alloys (metallic glasses), microcrystalline, quasicrystalline and nanocrystalline alloys and their applications. These materials are proving to be of considerable interest to research workers because of their possible application in the electronics industry, e.g. as diffusion barriers in devices or as data storage media.
