Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what character traits you need in order to be an effective teacher? This article discusses the findings from a 15-year research study of what in-service and preservice teachers have determined are the 12 characteristics of an effective teacher. Over his collegiate teaching career, the researcher has engaged college students in discussions and writing assignments pertaining to the outstanding characteristics of their most effective teacher. Effective was defined as that teacher who made the most significant impact on their lives. Students identified similar qualities among highly effective teachers. Based on those recurring themes, the researcher has concluded that there are at least 12 clear characteristics of being an effective teacher. These 12 characteristics consistently affect students in positive ways.

Book excerpt: The original idea for a conference on the "shapes of knowledge" dates back over ten years to conversations with the late Charles Schmitt of the Warburg Institute. What happened to the classifications of the sciences between the time of the medieval Studium and that of the French Encyclopedie is a complex and highly abstract question; but posing it is an effective way of mapping and evaluating long term intellectual changes, especially those arising from the impact of humanist scholarship, the new science of the seventeenth century, and attempts to evaluate, to apply, to reconcile, and to institutionalize these rival and interacting traditions. Yet such patterns and transformations cannot be well understood from the heights of the general history of ideas. Within the ~eneral framework of the organization of knowledge the map must be filled in by particular explorations and soundings, and our project called for a conference that would combine some encyclopedic (as well as interdisciplinary and inter national) breadth with scholarly and technical depth.

Book excerpt: Changes to energy behaviour -- the role of people and organisations in energy production, use and efficiency -- are critical to supporting a societal transition towards a low carbon and more sustainable future. However, which changes need to be made, by whom, and with what technologies are still very much under discussion. This book, developed by a diverse range of experts, presents an international and multi-faceted approach to the sociotechnical challenge of engaging people in energy systems and vice versa. By providing a multidisciplinary view of this field, it encourages critical thinking about core theories, quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and policy challenges. It concludes by addressing new areas where additional evidence is required for interventions and policy-making. It is designed to appeal to new entrants in the energy-efficiency and behaviour field, particularly those taking a quantitative approach to the topic. Concurrently, it recognizes ecological economist Herman Daly's insight: what really counts is often not countable. Introduces the major disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding energy and behaviour Delivers a cross-sectoral overview including energy behaviour in buildings, industry, transportation, smart grids, and smart cities Reviews a selection of innovative energy behaviour modelling approaches, including agent-based modelling, optimization, and decision support Critically addresses the importance of interventions, policies, and regulatory design
