Book excerpt: Little is known about student success in online learning environments, especially how the predisposing characteristics that the learner brings to the learning environment may differentially affect student outcomes. This study explored the question of whether a student's "readiness" to be a self-directed learner is a predictor of student success in an online community college curriculum. The specific goal of this investigation was to determine whether there was a significant relationship between self-directed learning readiness-as measured by Guglielmino's (1977) Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS)- and student success-as measured by course completion, grade point average (GPA) and student satisfaction, the latter assessed by student responses to an opinion poll. The subjects of this study were community college students in the state of Washington, enrolled in one or more transfer-level online courses delivered via WashingtonONLINE (WAOL) during fall quarter 1999. Students who voluntarily chose to respond to two elective surveys comprised the study sample. A correlational research design was used to test the explanatory power of self-directed learning readiness and to describe the relationships between variables. Since this study was designed to test hypothesized relationships, the resulting correlation coefficients were interpreted in terms of their statistical significance. The expected outcome of this study was to confirm or disconfirm a statistically significant relationship between self-directed learning readiness and student success in an online community college curriculum. The findings of this study failed to achieve this outcome due to (1) the lack of statistical reliability of the SDLRS among the subject population; (2) the resulting lack of validity of the SDLRS among the study sample; (3) a nonresponse effect; and (4) a self-selection effect. The unanticipated outcome of this study was evidence that student perception of student/instructor interactions is a single variable predictor of student success among community college students in an online learning environment. Recommendations for further study include Web-specific research methodologies that address the potentially deleterious effects of nonresponse and self-selection in cyber-research environments and continued exploration of the multiple facets of student success in asynchronous learning domains.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine issues related to online graduate course effectiveness, and graduate student perceptions of characteristics of online learning environments and their effectiveness, and to explore the relationship between graduate student perceptions and student success in online courses. The research methodology employed was that of survey research, using the Graduate Student Online Learning Environment Survey instrument, targeted at graduate students enrolled in online courses at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. A total of 238 graduate students participated in this study. Findings revealed that approximately 87.4% of graduate students reported positive online learning experiences. Participants identified themselves as highly self-directed learners. Several critical individual characteristics including marital status, employment status, student status, future enrollment planning, enrollment in online programs, and number of online courses played a moderating role in online graduate students' online course learning. However, based on the data from this study, no relationships were found among levels of age, gender, race/ethnicity, and previous online course experience and graduate students' online course learning perceptions. Only a small portion (3.4%) of graduate students who responded to the survey reported online course non-completion in the fall semester of 2014.

Research from online course studies of adult learners suggests several factors influence successful course completion. However, discrepancies exist as to whether the findings can be generalized to 9-12 E-learning students. Literature exploring the learner characteristics associated with successful secondary students in online studies is limited. The research on online education identifies students who are highly motivated, high-achieving, and self-starting as those that are most likely to complete online courses successfully (Barbour & Reeves, 2009). High schools across Ohio employ online learning education to support graduation pathways of all diverse learners.This study explored differences that exist between subgroups when learner characteristics in the online learning environment are compared with course completion percentage. Archival records of students who had attempted credits towards high school graduation through online learning coursework were collected from four participating school districts. The sample for this study was drawn from inner-ring suburban school districts in Northeast Ohio with an urban boundary. The subjects of this study included 214 high school students, grades 9-12, enrolled in online courses pursuing credits toward high school completion. Standard linear regression was calculated to predict course completion percentages based on gender, race, grade level, and grade level according to expected age as the independent variables. The results of this study provided evidence related to online learner characteristics that exist in digital learning environments. Positive results indicate students in upper-grade levels, and female students are more likely to be successful in earning credits in virtual learning environments. The analysis produced favorable outcomes for students who are at grade level to complete online courses successfully. Non-Black students are more likely to complete online courses when compared to Black students based on the findings of this research. The implications of this investigation have practical significance for school districts implementing virtual learning options across the curriculum. It is essential to continue exploring the relationship between individual learner characteristics and course completion for high school E-learners to support online education as a viable instructional pedagogy.

The developmental coursework necessary for many community college students is being offered both in online and hybrid environments. These students face challenges with the content and now find themselves needing to learn in a virtual classroom. Current research (Chernish, DeFranco, Lindner, & Dooley, 2005; Frederickson, Reed, & Clifford, 2005; Herman & Banister, 2007; Kromrey & Purdom, 1995; Scheetz & Guntner, 2004) shows that there is no difference in student success based on the learning environment, but this was completed primarily with upper-class and graduate students. This study investigated student success in a developmental math course taught in the face-to-face, hybrid, and online environments at a mid-Atlantic community college. Cognitive Load Theory was used during the design of the course and its principles were maintained in all of the learning environments. The sample was 167 students with an average age of 25 years, 58% were female, 49% were Caucasian and 43% were African-American. The focus was on student success, but the impact attrition had on the results of the study is discussed. The study also investigated student characteristics and their relationship to success. Age, gender, race, student status, placement scores, financial aid, learning style, locus of control, and technology skills are all compared between successful and unsuccessful students to determine if specific traits were more beneficial within a particular environment.

This study provides a more detailed view of current online students and how their personal characteristics interact with learning environments with their success in mind. This study is the first of its kind in online education and provides rich data on demographics, preferences, and practices of todays online students. Therefore, this study examined the relationships between academic success and demographic characteristics of high school students enrolled in online courses in order to determine the predictability of various academic and demographic characteristics on students' success. The demographic and academic characteristics examined in the study included: gender, ethnicity, attendance, grade level, GPA, previous online experience, and lunch code (free, paid, or reduced lunch). The population for this study included 987 students who enrolled in online high school courses at central and southern Alabama high schools between the semesters of fall 2015 through spring 2017. After the data were coded and analyzed using a multiple logistic regression, four variables -- GPA, gender, grade level, and lunch code were found significant in the predictability of students' success in an online high school course. The results showed: a) students with high GPAs, b) uppergrade level high school students, c) female students, and d) students who paid for their lunch -- tend to be more successful in completing an online high school course. The findings of this study can benefit school enrollment counselors, principals, administrators, and advisors to better assist with student enrollments in online high school courses. Future research is recommended to examine if any relationship existed between online high school student's success and other academic and demographic characteristics such as students with learning disabilities, economic status of parents, number of disciplinary infractions, etc.

Book excerpt: "This learning analytics study looked at the various student characteristics of all on-campus students who were enrolled in 100 and 200 level courses that were offered in both online and face-to-face formats during a two-year period. There is a perception that online education is either not as successful as face-to-face instruction, or it is more difficult for students. The results of this study show this is not the case. The goal of this study was to complete an in-depth analysis of student profiles addressing a variety of demographic categories as well as several academic and course related variables to reveal any patterns for student success in either online or face-to-face courses as measured by final grade. There were large enough differences within different demographic and academic categories to be considered significant for the study population, but overwhelmingly, the most significant predictor of success was found to be past educational success, as reflected in a student's cumulative grade point average. Further analysis was completed on students who declared high school credit as their primary major based on significantly different levels of success. These students were concurrent enrollment students or those who completed college courses for both high school and university credit. Since most of these students were new to the university, they did not have a cumulative GPA, so other predictive factors were explored.
