Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hansen-Love, that the meaning of a work of literature is generated by the interaction of paradigmatic and syntagmatic mechanisms. The image of character in Turgenev's stories is the result of devices characteristic of "narrative" as well as of "verbal art". It is partly created with the help of leitmotivs that form sequences of equivalences, and of intertextual references. Thus (social) representation is supplemented by lyrical and philosophical overtones. Comparable observations have been made by V. M. Markovic (1982) on Turgenev's novels, as well as on those by Puskin, Gogol and Lermontov.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume of SSLP the contributions of Dutch scholars working in the field of Slavic literature and culture to the 14th International Congress of Slavists (Ohrid, Macedonia, September 10–16, 2008) are brought together. All of them except one (on the Polish poet Cyprian Norwid’s story Stigma), deal with Russian literature from the end of the 18th century up to recent years. A variety of topics is treated, such as the feminization of Russian literature, the reflection of poetry in prose, anthropological and religious dimensions of literature, the specifics of theme and of plot, Russian modernism and postmodernism, and the status of language, from different methodological angles: gender studies, structural analysis, philosophical-contextual, postcolonial. Works of such Russian authors as Ippolit Bogdanovich, Ivan Turgenev, Pavel Mel’nikov-Pecherskii, Ignatii Potapenko, Iurii Trifonov, Timur Kibirov and Viktor Pelevin are discussed in detail. This volume is of interest for a scholarly audience interested in Russian literature of the last 250 years.

Book Synopsis Two Hundred Years of Pushkin by : Joe Andrew
Download or read book Two Hundred Years of Pushkin written by Joe Andrew and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2003 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From his earliest publications onwards Pushkin has been the source of inspiration, and imitation, for other writers, as well as composers, painters and, more recently, film-makers. This book seeks to explore the different relationship his followers have sought with the 'founding father' of modern Russian culture. Pushkin's Secret: Russian Writers Reread and Rewrite Pushkin takes a variety of approaches. Some contributors to the collection trace the way Pushkin's works provided the template for the characters and stories which were produced in the first decades after his untimely death in 1837. Others reveal the impact the myths surrounding Pushkin's tragic life were used (and abused) by followers, as well as governments of various hues. Yet other studies explore the very precise ways Pushkin's successors used his texts as source material for their own works. 'Pushkin's Secret' Russian Writers Reread and Rewrite Pushkin offers a series of fascinating insights into the impact that Alexander Pushkin has had on Russian culture over the last 200 years. Pushkin's Secret: Russian Writers Reread and Rewrite Pushkin will be followed by two further volumes devoted to Pushkin within the SSLP series, Pushkin: Myth and Monument and Pushkin's Legacy.

Book Synopsis The Jew, and Other Stories by : Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev
Download or read book The Jew, and Other Stories written by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2023-10-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In studying the Russian novel it is amusing to note the childish attitude of certain English men of letters to the novel in general; their depreciation of its influence and of the public's 'inordinate' love of fiction. Many men of letters to-day look on the novel as a mere story-book; as a series of light-coloured; amusing pictures for their 'idle hours;' and on memoirs; biographies; histories; criticism; and poetry as the age's serious contribution to literature. Whereas the reverse is the case. The most serious and significant of all literary forms the modern world has evolved is the novel; and brought to its highest development; the novel shares with poetry to-day the honour of being the supreme instrument of the great artist's literary skill. The Jew and Other Stories by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev: This collection of short stories explores the complexities of human relationships, and the ways in which love, loss, and betrayal shape our lives. Turgenev's writing is characterized by its sensitivity and nuance, offering readers a rich and rewarding reading experience. Key Aspects of the Book "The Jew and Other Stories": Character Development: The stories are powerful character studies, with Turgenev's nuanced and empathetic portrayal of his characters providing readers with a deep understanding of the human condition. Emotional Resonance: The book is emotionally resonant, with Turgenev's keen psychological insight allowing him to capture the complex and often contradictory nature of human experience. Timelessness: The stories continue to be relevant and engaging, with their exploration of universal themes and human experiences transcending time and place. Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev was a Russian novelist, short story writer, and playwright. Born in 1818, he is known for his contributions to Russian literature, including works like "Fathers and Sons" and "Smoke." His work continues to be valued for its psychological insight, nuanced characterization, and emotional resonance.
Book Synopsis Enlightening: Letters 1946 - 1960 by : Isaiah Berlin
Download or read book Enlightening: Letters 1946 - 1960 written by Isaiah Berlin and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-06-30 with total page 882 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'People are my landscape', Isaiah Berlin liked to say, and nowhere is the truth of this observation more evident than in his letters. He is a fascinated watcher of human beings in all their variety, and revels in describing them to his many correspondents. His letters combine ironic social comedy and a passionate concern for individual freedom. His interpretation of political events, historical and contemporary, and his views on how life should be lived, are always grounded in the personal, and his fiercest condemnation is reserved for purveyors of grand abstract theories that ignore what people are really like. This second volume of Berlin's letters takes up the story when, after war service in the United States, he returns to life as an Oxford don. Against the background of post-war austerity, the letters chart years of academic frustration and self-doubt, the intellectual explosion when he moves from philosophy to the history of ideas, his growing national fame as broadcaster and lecturer, the publication of some of his best-known works, his election to a professorship, and his reaction to knighthood. These are the years, too, of momentous developments in his private life: the bachelor don's loss of sexual innocence, the emotional turmoil of his father's death, his courtship of a married woman and transformation into husband and stepfather. Above all, these revealing letters vividly display Berlin's effervescent personality - often infuriating, but always irresistible.

Book Synopsis Home of the Gentry by : Ivan Turgenev
Download or read book Home of the Gentry written by Ivan Turgenev and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2007-12-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On one level the novel is about the homecoming of Lavretsky, who, broken and disillusioned by a failed marriage, returns to his estate and finds love again - only to lose it. The sense of loss and of unfulfilled promise, beautifully captured by Turgenev, reflects his underlying theme that humanity is not destined to experience happiness except as something ephemeral and inevitably doomed. On another level Turgenev is presenting the homecoming of a whole generation of young Russians who have fallen under the spell of European ideas that have uprooted them from Russia, their 'home', but have proved ultimately superfluous. In tragic bewilderment, they attempt to find reconciliation with their land.
