Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am 39 years old now and I began writing this book in 2008. I have an honors degree in Childhood and Youth Studies from Exeter University and over ten years experience working with young people in schools and within the care system in the UK. My story is about my life growing up in the care system and then trying to build a good life for myself. I hope it might help young people living a similar situation to remain hopeful for their futures. I hope that adults working with young people will find my book insightful and hopefully it will guide them in their working practice as well as change the way they view the young people they work with and their families. I have been very lucky in that I have gone on to do some good things and build a loving family of my own, although I wont pretend this was easy. Having to unlearn the things I had learned as a child and not just replicate them was hard work but worth every bit of sweat and every tear. I live in a small Somerset village in the UK with my family. I work with the Somerset Youth Offending Team and with children who have emotional and behavioral difficulties, many of whom are in or have been in residential care at some point. I have written this book for many reasons but mainly because growing up I didnt believe that I could have a good life. I honestly thought that good things werent meant for the likes of me. I was wrong, and I want to give every child the chance to read about how I discovered this. I did manage to break the cycle and I believe that we can all have a good life. It just might not come knocking at your door. I want those that work with young people to believe in them, every child and young person needs to believe that life is what we make it, not what others have predicted for us.

The included overview of the Fourth Edition line, plus recommended resource lists for eight popular genres, can help the GM decide which supplements will be most helpful to craft a new campaign. This supplement also provides canonical insight from Sean "Dr. Kromm" Punch, who draws on decades of experience answering questions and providing clarifications as the GURPS Line Editor. Book excerpt: With almost 5 million copies sold 60 years after its original publication, generations of readers have now journeyed with Milo to the Lands Beyond in this beloved classic. Enriched by Jules Feiffer’s splendid illustrations, the wit, wisdom, and wordplay of Norton Juster’s offbeat fantasy are as beguiling as ever. “Comes up bright and new every time I read it . . . it will continue to charm and delight for a very long time yet. And teach us some wisdom, too.” --Phillip Pullman For Milo, everything’s a bore. When a tollbooth mysteriously appears in his room, he drives through only because he’s got nothing better to do. But on the other side, things seem different. Milo visits the Island of Conclusions (you get there by jumping), learns about time from a ticking watchdog named Tock, and even embarks on a quest to rescue Rhyme and Reason. Somewhere along the way, Milo realizes something astonishing. Life is far from dull. In fact, it’s exciting beyond his wildest dreams!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most crucial skills for everyone to develop is influence. Without it, human relations are ineffective at best, and disastrous at worst. Whether you’re trying to communicate your business idea to an investor, encourage your children to embrace your moral values, or break an addiction to endless web surfing—if you lack the skill of influence, you will be unable to convince yourself or anyone else. The human mind is like a titanium lock. If you communicate poorly—through endless talking, inattentive listening, or over-the-top pressure—it’s like spinning the numbers on the lock over and over uselessly. But if you develop the key skills of influence, it’s like knowing the exact combination to that lock and gaining access to the consciousness of another person—or to your own. This book provides the right combination to that highly guarded lock. It will show you the skills of influence. It will enable you to produce incredible results—happier personal relationships, more sales, more profitable partnerships, and an increased ability to hold yourself to commitments that are important to you.

Book excerpt: Pick any letter of the alphabet, and youll find building blocks of character. For instance, A is all about attitude, authority, authenticity, and awareness. Skip to K, and youll find kindness, knowledge and karma. Every letter of the alphabet includes important lessons in building depth and strength of character, and Jim Boeglin explores some of the most critical qualities to develop in the second book of The Bike Writer trilogy. While some seem to have been born with an innate sense of character, for most people, character is an acquired trait. It is the result of a continuing effort to do the right thing, choosing thoughts and actions that are strong, confident, brave, kind, loving, helpful, and positive. We only need to look to the past to find role models with strong, deep characterpeople like George Washington, John Adams, Abe Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, and Gandhi. This lively collection of essays about qualities that build characteras well as those that undermine itis a must-read for anyone seeking to learn profound lessons on life.

Along with a clever plot, well-drawn characters make us want to continue reading a novel or finish watching a movie. In Creating Characters, Dwight V. Swain shows how writers can invent interesting characters and improve them so that they move a story along. “The core of character,” he says in chapter 1, “lies in each individual story person’s ability to care about something; to feel implicitly or explicitly, that something is important.” Building on that foundation—the capacity to care—Swain takes the would-be writer step-by-step through the fundamentals of finding and developing “characters who turn you on.” This basic but thought-provoking how-to is a valuable tool for both the novice and the seasoned writer.

An Actor Prepares explores the inner preparation an actor must undergo in order to explore a role to the full. In this volume, Sir John Gielgud said, this great director “found time to explain a thousand things that have always troubled actors and fascinated students.” Building a Character discusses the external techniques of acting: the use of the body, movement, diction, singing, expression, and control. Creating a Role describes the preparation that precedes actual performance, with extensive discussions of Gogol’s The Inspector General and Shakespeare’s Othello. Sir Paul Scofield called Creating a Role “immeasurably important” for the actor. These three volumes belong on any actor’s short shelf of essential books.

Book excerpt: “The most complete and comprehensive guide to character I've ever read." Adam Croft Character is at the heart of every story. We love stories because we fall in love with characters, we want to see what happens to them and we want to see them experience hope and despair. International Emmy nominated writer, Mark Boutros, offers a guide to creating characters who are engaging, emotionally driven and memorable. With experience as a screenwriter, novelist, creative writing teacher and mentor, Mark shares a mixture of theory and creative writing exercises to get you thinking about the questions to have in your mind during character creation. A lot of stories are perfectly functional, hitting all the right beats, but often fall short due to a thin or obvious character. Problems people think are related to plot are often symptoms of a deeper issue with the characters. Mark highlights what is at the core of character, the importance of motivation, trauma, obstacles and how every little detail can enrich an experience for an audience and ultimately make people care. How do you get to know people? By asking questions and getting to know them so you move past the shallow. Do the same during character development and your story will be so much more engaging for it. Each chapter focuses on an aspect important to character development and ends with exercises so you can apply the concepts to your work and write better characters. The book includes: - Goals, desires, lessons - Stakes to your character’s goal - Character flaws - Developing your character’s voice and world view - Generating truthful obstacles - How to write anti-heroes and compelling villains - Character and personality traits - Common mistakes in character writing - Character research - A character questionnaire The majority of the ideas originate from the author’s screenwriting experience, but they apply to all forms of story, whether it be fiction writing or playwriting, because the focus is on what really makes a character stand out and memorable. The job of the writer is to deliver an emotional experience. Character is the heart of that. If you're looking for a book to help you to improve your screenplay writing, fiction writing, or play writing then this is for you. An invaluable tool for beginner and experienced writers. This is perfect for anyone interested in screenwriting books, fiction writing books, or character development books. Praise for The Craft of Character: “Would 100% recommend not only for beginners, but also for experienced writers looking to get to know their characters better. A bit like writer-character therapy.” reader review “Both the chapters and the exercises are easy to understand and get through. Mark Boutros clearly knows his stuff and seems happy to be able to help the reader, rather than becoming lecturing and elitist. The structure of the book also means that it is easy to dip back into, when you come across a specific problem, and as such it is a great little reference book, which any aspiring storyteller would benefit from.” reader review “Normally, I find myself arguing with the author of craft books, but here I would say 90% of what I read were things I either found helpful, or flat out agreed with whole heartedly and just needed a reminder on why these things are important. The exercises were a excellent touch, especially as someone who is teaching writing, it gave me ideas on what to do for my students.” reader review

Book excerpt: Natalie's uplifting story of using the scientific process to "save" her mother from depression is what Booklist calls "a winning story full of heart and action." Eggs are breakable. Hope is not. When Natalie's science teacher suggests that she enter an egg drop competition, Natalie thinks that this might be the perfect solution to all of her problems. There's prize money, and if she and her friends wins, then she can fly her botanist mother to see the miraculous Cobalt Blue Orchids--flowers that survive against impossible odds. Natalie's mother has been suffering from depression, and Natalie is sure that the flowers' magic will inspire her mom to love life again. Which means it's time for Natalie's friends to step up and show her that talking about a problem is like taking a plant out of a dark cupboard and giving it light. With their help, Natalie begins an uplifting journey to discover the science of hope, love, and miracles. A vibrant, loving debut about the coming-of-age moment when kids realize that parents are people, too. Think THE FOURTEENTH GOLDFISH meets THE THING ABOUT JELLYFISH. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR * KIRKUS REVIEWS * THE CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY * "Natalie's Korean heritage is sensitively explored, as is the central issue of depression." --Publishers Weekly "A compassionate glimpse of mental illness accessible to a broad audience." --Kirkus Reviews, STARRED REVIEW "Holy moly!!! This book made me feel." --Colby Sharp, editor of The Creativity Project, teacher, and cofounder of Nerdy Book Club
