Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Damn bad place Sheffield,’ said King George Ill, reflecting on the town’s reputation as a hotbed of radicalism with revolutionary tendencies, a reputation it maintained for much of the 19th century, augmented by the numerous times that the Riot Act was read to the Sheffield mob. Yet few Sheffield riots were in the name of revolution. They were more to do with social inequalities, injustice and deprivation, only the Chartists’ rising and connections with the Pentrich rising came close to revolution. The price of provisions, the lack of democracy, oppression and perceived assaults on social norms by new religious movements were the dominant causal factors of social disorder in the Sheffield of the 18th and 19th centuries, the protagonists being coal owners, market traders, magistrates, politicians, the police, the militia, resurrectionists, Wesleyans, Mormons and Salvationists. A personal dispute and an attempted robbery also brought out sections of the Sheffield townsfolk in protest and riot. Some of the events in this book will be familiar to the student of Sheffield’s history; some of the events will amaze them; all of the events detailed in Insurrection will fascinate the general reader.

Book Synopsis Political Poetry as Discourse by : Angela M. Leonard
Download or read book Political Poetry as Discourse written by Angela M. Leonard and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political Poetry as Discourse examines the works of the political poets John Greenleaf Whittier and Ebenezer Elliott, drawing comparisons to contemporary hip hoppers who take their words from local newspapers and other discursive sources that they read, hear, and observe. Local presses and news vehicles stand as cultural material forms that supply poets with words, particularly words that congeal into patterns of language, allowing the creation of a poetic discourse. As readers of these poets apply techniques and theories of discourse analysis, they reveal how poets borrow, lift, hijack, or resituate words from one or more different genres to use as tools of political change. Leonard engages with the critical toolboxes of content analysis, semiosis, and deconstruction to demonstrate how to critically investigate and interrogate the images, sounds and words not just of politically engaged poets, but also of any disseminator of culture and news. Moving beyond theory into praxis, this book becomes a model of its own transgressive premise by thinking, analyzing, writing, and teaching against the grain. Its focus on language as unbounded discourse makes this book a relevant and insightful demonstration in democratic pedagogy and in teaching for transformation.
Book Synopsis A History of Labour in Sheffield by : Sidney Pollard
Download or read book A History of Labour in Sheffield written by Sidney Pollard and published by Ashgate Publishing. This book was released on 1993 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the working and living conditions of workers, especially those in the cutlery and tools, steel and engineering trades, in Sheffield between 1850 and 1939. Housing and public heath, real wages and cyclical variations in wages, and trade union history, including the well-known outrages, receive particular attention. Sheffield produced for a world market and its prosperity was affected by world economic conditions, the rise of rival producers overseas and the armaments booms of the two world wars among other factors. As the largest industrial city in Britain, with a high proportion of well-organized skilled male workers, Sheffield became the first major city in Britain to be controlled by Labour and the influence of its social structure on local and national political representation, first through the Liberal Party and then through Labour, forms a major theme.
Book Synopsis The Decline of British Radicalism, 1847-1860 by : Miles Taylor
Download or read book The Decline of British Radicalism, 1847-1860 written by Miles Taylor and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an important study of British radicalism in the years between the collapse of Chartism in 1848 and the rise of Gladstonian liberalism in the 1860s. Taylor begins by examining the rise of radicalism in the 1830s and 1840s, arguing that it was the 1832 Reform Act which invigorated radicalism, by enlarging the powers of Parliament and increasing the need for independent MPs. Set against the backdrop of revolution and reaction in Europe, the Crimean War, and the Indian Mutiny, this wide-ranging book looks at how and why radicalism lost its hold on British politics.
Book Synopsis Labour History and the Labour Movement in Britain by : Sidney Pollard
Download or read book Labour History and the Labour Movement in Britain written by Sidney Pollard and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on labour history in Britain, but brings in comparative material on the Continent, in particular inter-war Germany. Special attention is given to wages and living and working conditions in the 19th century, to Robert Owen and Co-operation, and to the modern trade union movement and its attempts to keep up the interests of its members in the fluctuating conditions of the late 19th and earlier 20th centuries. The author defends the notion that wage-earners have common interests and frequently share common experiences, and that their organisations have both a strictly economic aspect (trade unions) and a wider political dimension. The profound changes which the labour organisations underwent in the 19th and 20th centuries are a major concern of these essays.
