Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes a network of interrelated ideas which I have developed, off and on, over the past eight or ten years. The underlying theme is the psychological interplay of order and chaos. Or, to put it another way, the interplay of deduction and induction. I will try to explain the relationship between logical, orderly, conscious, rule-following reason and fluid, self organizing, habit-governed, unconscious, chaos-infused intuition. My previous two books, The Structure of Intelligence and The Evolving Mind, briefly touched on this relationship. But these books were primarily concerned with other matters: SI with constructing a formal language for discussing mentality and its mechanization, and EM with exploring the role of evolution in thought. They danced around the edges of the order/chaos problem, without ever fully entering into it. My goal in writing this book was to go directly to the core of mental process, "where angels fear to tread" -- to tackle all the sticky issues which it is considered prudent to avoid: the nature of consciousness, the relation between mind and reality, the justification of belief systems, the connection between creativity and mental illness,.... All of these issues are dealt with here in a straightforward and unified way, using a combination of concepts from my previous work with ideas from chaos theory and complex systems science.

This book was released on 2013-12-13 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of different lectures presented by experts in the field of nonlinear science provides the reader with contemporary, cutting-edge, research works that bridge the gap between theory and device realizations of nonlinear phenomena. Representative examples of topics covered include: chaos gates, social networks, communication, sensors, lasers, molecular motors, biomedical anomalies, stochastic resonance, nano-oscillators for generating microwave signals and related complex systems. A common theme among these and many other related lectures is to model, study, understand, and exploit the rich behavior exhibited by nonlinear systems to design and fabricate novel technologies with superior characteristics. Consider, for instance, the fact that a shark’s sensitivity to electric fields is 400 times more powerful than the most sophisticated electric-field sensor. In spite of significant advances in material properties, in many cases it remains a daunting task to duplicate the superior signal processing capabilities of most animals. Since nonlinear systems tend to be highly sensitive to perturbations when they occur near the onset of a bifurcation, there are also lectures on the general topic of bifurcation theory and on how to exploit such bifurcations for signal enhancements purposes. This manuscript will appeal to researchers interested in both theory and implementations of nonlinear systems.

Book excerpt: This collection of articles introduces the idea of a hierarchical order in chaotic systems and natural phenomena. To understand nature, nonlinear sciences use a multidisciplinary perspective. Therefore the book integrates research work of different fields: experimental evidence for the theory drawn from physics, biology and chemistry; theoretical progress in mathematical treatment, numerical techniques and graphical methods of nonlinear sciences; and to not-yet-understood philosophical and fundamental problems related to chaos and cosmos, chaos and quantum mechanics or evolutionary dynamics. Featuring the most recent advances in nonlinear dynamics this collection should provide an indispensable reference source and starting point for further research concerning dynamical and hierarchical chaotic systems. Besides this book is in honor of Professor O E Rössler, one of the pioneers of Chaos Theory, who celebrated his 50th birthday in May 1990. Contents:Hierarchies of Dynamical Systems (M Klein & G Baier)The Chaotic Hierarchy (O E Rössler)Phase Regulation of Coupled Oscillators and Chaos (R H Abraham)Symbolic Dynamics in the Belousov-Zhabotinskii Reaction: From Rössler's Intuition to Experimental Evidence for Shil'nikov's Homoclinic Chaos (F Argoul et al.)Determinism in a World of Non-Invertible Transformations (H Degn)Structural, Functional and Dynamical Hierarchies in Neural Networks (A V Holden)Climbing Up Dynamical Hierarchy (K Kaneko)Chaotic Hierarchy from the One-Dimensional Box-Within-a-Box Bifurcations Structure Properties (Ch Mira)The Peroxidase-Oxidase Reaction: A Case for Chaos in the Biochemistry of the Cell (L F Olsen et al.)Experimental Progress on the Ladder Towards Higher Chaos (J Peinke et al.)Conjugate Pair of Representations in Chaos and Quantum Mechanics (K Tomita) Readership: Mathematicians, mathematical physicists and condensed matter physicists. Book excerpt: While the theories of Matte Blanco about the structure of the unconscious and the way in which it operates are generally recognised to be the most original since those of Freud, for many people the ways in which his ideas are expressed, including the use of terminology from mathematics and logic, make them difficult of access. Eric Rayner has written the first clear introduction to Matte Blanco's key concepts for psychotherapists and psychoanalysts and all those concerned with moving psychoanalytic thinking forward. He sets out the central ideas in a way which is easy to understand and then shows, with examples, how they relate to clinical practice. He also describes how the ideas are related to those of people in other disciplines - mathematics, logic, psychology (specifically Piaget), and anthropology, among others. Drawing on the work of a group of people who have been inspired by Matte Blanco's thinking to extend their own ideas and test them out in the consulting room, this book reveals the significance of Matte Blanco's thought for future research.

Book excerpt: While many books have discussed methodological advances in nonlinear dynamical systems theory (NDS), this volume is unique in its focus on NDS's role in the development of psychological theory. After an introductory chapter covering the fundamentals of chaos, complexity and other nonlinear dynamics, subsequent chapters provide in-depth coverage of each of the specific topic areas in psychology. A concluding chapter takes stock of the field as a whole, evaluating important challenges for the immediate future. The chapters are written by experts in the use of NDS in each of their respective areas, including biological, cognitive, developmental, social, organizational and clinical psychology. Each chapter provides an in-depth examination of theoretical foundations and specific applications and a review of relevant methods. This edited collection represents the state of the art in NDS science across the disciplines of psychology.

This book provides in-depth viewpoints on security issues and explains how nano devices and their unique properties can address the opportunities and challenges of the security community, manufacturers, system integrators, and end users. This book elevates security as a fundamental design parameter, transforming the way new nano-devices are developed. Part 1 focuses on nano devices and building security primitives. Part 2 focuses on emerging technologies and integrations.
