Book excerpt: The Cotentin Peninsula, also known as the Cherbourg Peninsula, is a peninsula in Normandy, forming part of the north-western coast of France. It juts out northwards into the English Channel, towards Great Britain. To its west lie the Channel Islands. The peninsula lies wholly within the departement of Manche, in the region of Basse-Normandie. The Mont Saint-Michel, Tombelaine, Chausey, the Minquiers, Jersey, the Ecréhous, Sark, Guernsey, Alderney, Pelée Island, Tatihou, Saint-Marcouf... some of these islands are French, whereas others belong to the British Crown. Why and for how long? Are they all inhabited? What language is spoken there? How are they governed? The answers to all of these questions and many more are provided by Edmond Thin, renowned for his many works on Normandy's maritime history, together with an insight into the people, the history and the most spectacular sites to be seen on these charismatic islands which form an extraordinary archipelago around the Cotentin peninsula.

Book Synopsis The Channel Islands in Anglo-French Relations, 1689-1918 by : Colin Partridge
Download or read book The Channel Islands in Anglo-French Relations, 1689-1918 written by Colin Partridge and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2024-01-16 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines how the Channel Islands have been crucial to Britain's successful maritime superiority in the English Channel. The Channel Islands have played a key role in both naval warfare and Anglo-French diplomacy, but this has not always been highlighted sufficiently even though Britain and France were at war for most of the period 1689-1815. This book considers a wide range of maritime subjects where the role of the Channel Islands has been significant, such as intelligence gathering, piracy and privateering, and naval strategy and control of the Channel. It also examines topics in relation to the Channel Islands specifically, such as surveying and hydrography, fortifications, trade and Channel Islands societies. It charts changes over time, including the impact of technological changes, from the wars of Louis XIV and William III, through the many Anglo-French wars of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and includes planning for wars which were anticipated but avoided. Throughout the issues are discussed from the perspectives of Britain, France and the Channel Islands themselves, equal weight being given to all three perspectives. Andrew Lambert is Professor of War Studies at King's College, London and one of Britain's foremost maritime and naval historians. Colin Partridge is a former consultant to the States of Guernsey's 'Fortress Guernsey' programme for the restoration and interpretation of Guernsey's fortifications. Jean de Préneuf is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Lille and Head of the Research, Teaching and Studies Unit at the Historical Branch of the French Ministry of Defence at Vincennes.

Book Synopsis The Lesser-Known Varieties of English by : Daniel Schreier
Download or read book The Lesser-Known Varieties of English written by Daniel Schreier and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-04 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first ever volume to compile sociolinguistic and historical information on lesser-known, and relatively ignored, native varieties of English around the world. Exploring areas as diverse as the Pacific, South America, the South Atlantic and West Africa, it shows how these varieties are as much part of the big picture as major varieties and that their analysis is essential for addressing some truly important issues in linguistic theory, such as dialect obsolescence and death, language birth, dialect typology and genetic classification, patterns of diffusion and transplantation and contact-induced language change. It also shows how close interwoven fields such as social history, contact linguistics and variationist sociolinguistics are in accounting for their formation and maintenance, providing a thorough description of the lesser-known varieties of English and their relevance for language spread and change.
Book Synopsis The Archaeology and Early History of the Channel Islands by : Heather Sebire
Download or read book The Archaeology and Early History of the Channel Islands written by Heather Sebire and published by History Press Limited. This book was released on 2005 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney lie off the western coast of the Cotentin peninsula of Normandy in France and some 120km from mainland Britain. Strategically placed in the western channel, yet subject to very large tidal ranges and dangerous currents, the islands have been occupied for over 250,000 years. As a result they are rich in archaeological and historical sites and monuments. Many excavations have taken place over the last 20 years, the results of which have contributed to new evidence, particularly in relation to the Mesolithic, Roman and medieval periods. This book describes the archaeological record of the Channel Islands from their early prehistory to the medieval period. Heather Sebire has lived in Guernsey since 1978. After graduating from London University she worked in archaeology in London and Wessex before moving to Guernsey. She was secretary of La Societe Guernesiasie Archaeology Group for many years and participated in much of the rescue archaeology that took place on the island. Since 1995 she has held the post of Archaeology Officer at Guernsey Museum and has written and broadcast about the archaeology of Guernsey and the other islands since that time.
Book Synopsis The Channel Islands, 1370-1640 by : Tim Thornton
Download or read book The Channel Islands, 1370-1640 written by Tim Thornton and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charts the history of Jersey and Guernsey, showing their crucial importance for England in the period. This book surveys the history of the bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey in the late medieval and early modern periods, focusing on political, social and religious history. The islands' regular tangential appearance in histories ofEngland and the British Isles has long suggested the need for a more systematic account from the perspective of the islands themselves. Jersey and Guernsey were at the forefront of attempts by the English kings in the fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries to maintain and extend their dominions in France. During the Wars of the Roses and the early Tudor period, they were frequently the refuge for claimants and plotters. Throughout the Reformation, they were a leading centre of Presbyterianism. Later, they were strategically important during the continental wars of Elizabeth's reign. The book charts all these events in a comprehensive way. In addition, it shows how the islands' relationship with central power in England varied but never saw a simple subjection to centralised uniform authority, how Jersey and Guernsey maintained links with Normandy, Brittany and France more widely, and how politics, religion, society and culture developed in the islands themselves. Tim Thornton is Professor of History and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) at the University of Huddersfield, having been previously Dean of the School of Music, Humanities and Media. He is the author of Cheshire and the Tudor State and Prophecy, Politics and the People in Early Modern England, both of which are published by Boydell & Brewer.
